Overwood is a popular restaurant in beautiful Alexandria, VA. This family-friendly eatery offers guests both indoor and outdoor seating. The interior is decorated with trendy brick accent walls, a large wooden bar, wall-mounted TVs, a variety of lighting styles, huge wine racks and comfortable seating. Outside, customers of Overwood are welcome to dine on the quaint and welcoming patio.
Overwood offers patrons an extensive menu of traditional American cuisine and breakfast dishes. Menu items include beef and veal and pork meatloaf, wood oven salmon salad and fried green tomato tower. There is also a full bar menu for visitors to choose from and enjoy.

Hopefully, Overwood was just having an off night, but on our recent visit, we were incredibly disappointed with the food. Had to send back the Brussels sprouts (an old favorite of ours from Overwood) TWICE; despite having ordered the tuna rare, it came out medium; fries were tepid and rubbery, as if they'd been sitting under a heat lamp for an extended period of time. Our server commented that the restaurant recently removed its oven, but it tasted as if everything had been microwaved. We've been going to Overwood for years, but not sure we'll ever be back. Would NOT recommend Overwood for diners looking for a good meal in Old Town Alexandria.
We learned that Overwood is going to become a barbecue restaurant. When we asked our server when this would happen, the server answered that staff has heard this information but only indirectly. Management needs to provide more information to staff to be able to answer customers' questions.
The resteraunt was very full but we were seated within 5 minutes of our reservation. Service was good and friendly but waitress was stretched with a large number of tables. Food was enjoyable but average. Portions were resonable as was the value per serving and slightly less than two blocks away in King Street resteraunts. All in all a pleasant casual dining experience.
The drinks were bad, the food was sub par. The place looked nice, staff was friendly and attentive, but the food quality was poor. My wife ordered the Peachy Queen cocktail, and it tasted horrible, then her steak came out rare when she ordered medium well. My chicken BLT was dry, the fries were good. We ordered the mussels as an appetizer, tasted bland, Luke warm. Went there for a casual meal, wouldn't go back.
We like to eat at Overwood when we have family in town as everyone can always find something on the menu. The food was very good, especially one of the specials that night- Soft Shell Crab. It was plump and sweet-one of the best I have had this season. Also, our server was attentive.
However, the noise level is disturbing for my husband and me-we are in our 70's. If it would have been a nice evening, we would have asked to eat outside. The room off to the right was quieter, but it did not smell very good. The rest rooms are in that area and there must have been a problem-glad we were not in that room.
Too loud, large group filled restaurant -hard to converse even in a booth. Charged full side cost for fruit which replaced a potato side. Very small portion of fruit considering cost. Staff was busy with group, could not get refill of coffee.
Food was OK but not a good value considering you can't trade same cost sides to get a plate you want to eat. Why does it matter if I prefer grits to potatoes?

Chose Overwood on the basis of the menu posted on website with its large, varied selection of oysters. Extremely disappointed with actual availability of only two choices on a Saturday evening. Such "bait and switch" tactics crushed both expectations and experience.
Overwood is a good little neighborhood spot. We ate sort of late (8:30pm...not really late actually). The appetizers were very good. Fried ravioli and calamari. I loved the Blanhattan (Manhattan with Blanton's bourbon). Our waiter, Andrew, was spot on. He was very friendly attentive and easy going and he gave me a nice pour on a glass of wine.
That is where is stops. The main courses were mediocre. Mussels, while having a good flavor were sort of dried out. I sopped my bread (as you do) though and the sauce was good. The mussels themselves were just dry. Others had the crabcakes and it was just meh. Nothing so, so great.
The ambience is typical mid range bar/restaurant feel. Nothing bad about it all.

Despite making reservations, our table of 12 people had to wait half an hour before we were seated, and then we were seated in a hallway outside the restaurant. That ended up being a good thing because it kept us out of the noisy main dining area, but the ambiance was a little odd and people kept walking back and forth through the area. The cocktails appear promising on the menu but end up being overly watered down (or maybe it was because our server didn't bring them out quickly enough? Hard to say). The "fried green tomato tower topped with shrimp" appetizer had one shrimp topping six slices of fried green tomato. Hardly worth mentioning the shrimp at all... The calamari appetizer, instead of being sprinkled with lemon juice as normal, had an inexplicable slice of lemon fried along with the jalapeno and calamari which was unpleasant to bite into. I can't speak to the other guests' food but the "special" fish and rice with mango pineapple salsa was flavorless. When our waitress offered us dessert I think we were all too anxious to leave.
Slightly away from King Street it makes a convenient last minute venue for a meal when other places are fully booked. We had Fathers Day Sunday buffet brunch here( for this reason) -- there was a good variety, the dishes were kept well stocked and quality of food was reasonable, but for the price, nothing was exceptional.
We booked a brunch for 11 for a special Father's Day buffet OVERWOOD was having. They had a beautiful table ready for us away from the crowd. The buffet was very good. It had a great selection of breakfasty items. The fruit was spectacular. Very fresh. We've had the same waiter before. He was very nice and efficient. We love OVERWOOD. If you like Ribs, GET THEM. Seriously. I'm a bit of a ribs snob. Very very good.
Was looking for an upscale but not overpriced restaurant in this wonderful part of town for my dad's 70th birthday - we weren't disappointed. Good variety on the menu, our selected meals (hummus appetizer, pork chop for me, crab cake for dad, chocolate bread pudding & coffee for dessert) were delicious, and our waitress was perfectly attendant without being overbearing. Price was good for the portion & flavor. Wish I could have tried something from the bar, but I was driving... maybe next time.
We were celebrating a birthday, so I requested a nice table in my reservation. The hostess tried to seat us in the back room which has the ambiance of a high school cafeteria, with bright lights, linoleum floor, and uncovered, unattractive tables. We were moved to a booth in the main dining room which was very loud but a little more upscale. The food and service were OK. The wait staff all appear to be young and not very experienced, and don't have a lot of info about the menu.
Stopped in for brunch and had a great time celebrating a fantastic GW Parkway race day. We had reservations at 10:00 but they didn't open until 10:30 (opentable glitch?), but they say is anyway and served us drinks until the kitchen was open. Hostess and waiter were extremely pleasant and our waiter had our order ready to go as soon as the kitchen was ready to roll. Started with delicious mimosas and bloody Mary's and an order of the deviled eggs. I had the Charleston Fritata (Cajun flavors) and the wife had the Chicken and Biscuits. The mushroom based gravy was awesome. All around great experience...we'll be back!
I went with high hopes in looking at the type of food offered (comfort) and the price (competitive with Old Town). The only thing worth eating were the fried green tomatoes. I ordered the skinny chicken and it tasted like frozen, fast food chicken. The sauce was over-salted and the rice was a little undercooked. My friend got the meatloaf and other than impressive grill marks, it was dry and tasteless. I was unimpressed and disappointed that this restaurant was rated so highly when there are dozens of other amazing restaurants a block away. While it wasn't terrible, I will definitely not be going back.
The Overwood is located near dozens of other restaurants with higher quality food and much more professional service. It seems more like you're walking into a country bar than into an Alexandria restaurant. Probably OK for lower end students/tourists/families. Not for foodies or business people.
I would not recommend the mussels or the Mac n cheese. I prefer smaller mussels but these were giant and the amount of sauce given was small so they got cold very quickly. The Mac n cheese was missing the cheese sauce! There was a bunch of melted cheese on top but I would not call it Mac n cheese. Mojito was good.
Away from the busy King street restaurants, but well within walking distance from most hotels. Very comfortable atmosphere, I loved the bare brick walls. Reservations (6pm) on a Sat were no problem...but place was filling up by our departure at 7:30. Wait staff very friendly and attentive. Food was awesome...our spinach dip came out quickly and was very good, my salmon was done perfectly. My wife's scallops were excellent. Wine selection was very good. Highly recommend this slightly off-the-beaten-track restaurant for a couple or a group.
We were looking for somewhere in Old Town that we could meet up with old friends on a Friday night without costing anyone more than they may be comfortable with. Overwood filled the bill. The food was good, not great gourmet, but just solid good. The atmosphere lent itself to a fun time and the service was just attentive enough. And when the bill came nobody was shocked.
This is the fourth year in a row that we've come to Overwood for Easter buffet brunch and we have never been disappointed. It is great because our kids are welcome and the environment is perfect for that - not too fancy, but not Chuck E Cheese either. The staff is awesome and the food is always great. Highly recommended. Tip - get the mimosa with Grand Marnier.
