Out of the Blue
This was our first time at Out of the Blue. Every element was very well done, including cocktails, oysters, entrees (swordfish tips and a shrimp/scallop special) and dessert (cannoli). Service was perfect. In terms of atmosphere, it has a small, neighborhood field. From a price perspective, it was a great value.
We went in the Saturday night, the restaurant was full. Kitchen was a little busy, but the food was great, we liked everything we had order, filled squid salad, scallop with pasta, little neck in garlic sauce. We will be back.
Whenever we have a date-night without our kids - or even with! - we always find ourselves back at Out of the Blue. The relaxed atmosphere and the sense of being recognized and welcomed each time has made this our neighborhood go-to. Equally wonderful is the freshness and variety of the food. There's enough options for the kitchen to do each meal thoughtfully and well. We have a beloved friend who comes with us who is also a 'regular' who has little tweaks that are always accommodated. We brought our elderly parents here recently and they were just as charmed. Thank you for offering food and service that is straightforward, special without being fussy, feels like a special night out and also like your neighborhood rest spot. We will, - of course - be coming back.
Delicious food and great atmosphere
Thrilled with our dinners! Vegetarian pasta delicious. Fish amazing. Helpful unpretentious service. Homey and fabulous. Will go back every time I visit Boston
This is the best restaurant in Somerville if not the greater Boston area. My wife and I lived in Somerville for 7 years and always ate there for special occasions and really any occasion. We now live in DC but go back every time we are in town. Amazing food, friendly people, and a great value. I've always said that if it were located on the waterfront it would charge twice as much and be a 5 star restaurant. You won't regret stopping by Out of the Blue.
Loved this place, I was in town for a concert, a friend recommended this place and it was great. Locally owned, everything was fresh, I just love places like this & they are rare these days. I always judge a place like this which specializes in seafood and it’s a Linguini and Clam sauce entree, fantastic! Next time I’m in the local are we will b back!
Oysters so fresh. Fish well prepared. Great neighborhood place. Very friendly service.
One of my very favorite restaurants. The food is incredibly delicious, the service is tops, and the general kindness and comfort of Out of the Blue is the best there is. If it were in my neighborhood, I'd be there at least once a week or more.
our favorite restaurant. Lydia and steve never, ever fail to make their guests happy and comfortable. adult beverages are generously poured, and the food is simply perfect, every time. clearly they are proud of their establishment, and that translates into their staff as well. a pleasure to be their guests.
Excellent excellent service
Visiting our son and partner at Tufts, so wanted a special treat of seafood/Italian cooking in a casual atmosphere without driving to the Old North End. Out of the Blue delivered exactly what everyone had hoped to enjoy, from crispy calamari, perfect grilled swordfish &pasta, to outstanding tiramisu and cannoli, all with timely service and a sense of humor. We will be back during our next visit! I would eat here monthly if we lived closer.
Won't be returning to Out of the Blue. Don't write many reviews like this one but oh well: party of 4 for dinner on a Friday evening. Our drinks were flung at us - literally. Two of us had our drinks spilled onto the table and the server vanished without apology or napkins. When he returned, we pointed out the spills and he said, "Sorry." and then asked what we wanted to order. Had to ask for napkins...
Two of us had the clam chowder to start which was watery, bland, and lacking clams. For mains, one of us had the Surf and Turf (steak and shrimp) - the shrimp was soggy and mealy, the steak was overcooked (when we noted this to the server, he said, "that's how the kitchen prepares the dish."). One of us had the clams and linguine - clams were very good and flavorful and pasta cooked perfectly. One winner. Another of us had the pan roasted salmon with peppers, onions, and mushrooms in a mustard sauce. The salmon had literally dissolved into the vegetables. We assumed the salmon was supposed to be a whole piece in the sauce but the salmon, veggies, and potatoes were too soft and indistinct. Like a salmon gravy over sweet potato. Our last main was grilled swordfish with herb rub, veggies, and potato - this was OK - not much flavor and the veggies/potato were overcooked.
We skipped dessert and when it came to paying the bill, the server let us know their systems were down and there was an ATM on the street...! Really! And can I deduct the ATM fee since it's not my bank? We addressed this with the hostess who let us know she could manually run our credit card - which we did.
Sat across from another table that were also clearly unhappy with their meals as well. We definitely will not coming back. Too expensive to take a chance - very disappointed given other reviews. The kitchen must have been very off that night.
Baked fish has never been disappointing. Half lobster with linguini is more than one portion for me. Experienced waiter was very nice. Three of us left this Thursday dinner with good memories. Thanks..
Great food great service great prices great place great experience
Huge cherrystones and fresh oysters. Excellent linguine with lots of clams. We had filet of sole and Mahi Mahi which were very fresh. We enjoyed a satisfying Boston seafood meal.
The food was absolutely delicious, and our server was excellent. I highly recommend this place!
Family-owned seafood place, great for all ages.
If you want a simple fresh fish dinner this is place.
Have been coming here for 20 years. It is still my #1 choice for seafood. Would appreciate a free glass of wine or dessert to mark a special ocassion for long standing cistomers
The best seafood restaurant around!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Hands down!!!!!
Food and service were excellent. Very fresh seafood and attentive wait staff. Wine selection not great and the glasses and pours were very small.
It was all around lackluster. Sat next to the noisy kitchen pass. Disinterested staff. Food was edible but nothing special. Overall just a "meh" experience.
Great food and drinks. The first table they tried to seat us at was right next to the kitchen window so we decided to sit at the bar and it was great. I will definitely be going back. Everything seemed to be very fresh.
Excellent seafood and service in a casual atmosphere- just we wanted. Would highly recommend!
Wonderful dinners - filet of sole/risotto, Branzino, shrimp/calamari/rabe, Broiled sea scallops ; friendly staff; accommodated our request to bring in our own dessert. Quiet as we were in the back...very relaxing evening.
Everything was amazing Clams & linguine fried shrimp the steak with a cheery pepper sauce shrimp scampi fried scallops everything was gone after we got done eating everything came out quick can’t wait to go back
Real food! No BS!
I've eaten at Out of the Blue dozens of times. The food always satisfies. Really nice people work there. Affordable wines. Everything is fresh as needs to be with fish.
I always enjoy this restaurant. The food is constantly very good and excellent service. It is small and very energetic, so if you are looking for a quiet place, this is not it.
Amazing food! Old school Italian-delicious
It's funny, we have been here a few times and every time we go Out of the Blue exceeds our expectations. There's a slight feeling when we walk in the door that -this- night is too busy and the staff is barely able to keep up but then orders are taken efficiently and food begins to arrive and once again we are impressed all over again.
What a gem!
Food was absolutely phenomena, same as the service
The staff are wonderful and food is delicious and consistently so. Enjoy.
We had a nice dinner and enjoyed our overall experience. Not fancy but a great value and staff were very attentive.
Very good food at very good prices. Helpful service. Great place for a meal with friends.
We arrived late but the kitchen was still open. They made a special fish stew for us and the food was fabulous. All good
Excellent service, excellent food, nice environment. Always enjoy our meals.
Always delicious food and the nicest staff around
Out of the Blue, a long-time staple of Davis Square, is consistently outstanding in every way. My companion and I both had the white fish stew, and we both thought it was excellent! We also loved the flan!!! The atmosphere is always relaxed. The restaurant was full, but there is an easy, unrushed atmosphere there at all times. Service is prompt but unobtrusive. The owners, Stephen and Lydia are both very personable, congenial people, who have taken pride in developing this outstanding restaurant spot in Davis Square. I cannot recommend it enough!
