A very neighborhoody sushi spot in Hayes, with high-quality fish at reasonable prices.
So yummy! Tried some new rolls but the nigiri were some of the best we've had in sf! Garlic albacore, ocean trout and hamachi nigiri were out of this world.
Otoro is and will continue to be our go to sushi spot!! Check the chalkboard...there's all kinds of goodies up there!! You can't miss here!!
Otoro has never disappointed--every time, the sushi is the freshest ever and prepared by masters--really! Ocean trout magical & roll with salmon & avocado amazing. We always start with tempura--batter fantastic with freshest veggies & shrimp. Perfect pre-ballet dining.
Food was just ok, not outstanding as expected. Service was abysmal for a busy evening, surprised at lack of service staff and delays in food service.
There are many other better sushi places in the vicinity for the price
MY FIRST TIME AND REALLY ENJOYED THE CHOICES OF SMALL PLATES TO SHARE.
INGREDIENTS SEEMED FRESH AND WELL PREPARED.
As per usual...Otoro serves some of the best sushi in the city! It is and will continue to be our 'go to' sushi spot. Has a great neighborhood feel and wait staff is awesome!! Take friends and family here, they will thank you!!
I was impressed. The room is small but not crowded. It's not pretentious. I'm picky about sushi (for example, I automatically do not like places that use a lot of mayo on rolls) and the sushi here was very good. What caught my eye in particular was a note at the bottom of the menu indicating you can make up your own roll. Very cool. Our server was attentive and nice. We will definitely return.
Decent food for the price. Had sort of a more casual vibe than I figured.
Small and raucous, but food is delicious! Great selection of sushi and izkaya-style foods. Nice sake selections.
Birthday, friend got sick after dinner
Fish is good quality and ingredients combinations/flavors are average. Small place with nice quite atmosphere
Very tasty and fresh. Would recommend and return. We were about 10 minutes late for our reservation and was a little concerned based on other reviews I've read about that possibly being an issue. But the folks there didn't bat and eye and we were seated within 2 minutes of arriving. Place was definitely busy and staff hustling but still friendly and willing to answer questions and recommend things.
Fantastic sushi and creative tools! Very fresh fish and create service!
Excellent as usual. Four of us ordered close to 20 items (we were stuffed) - ~8 appetizers, 6 nigiri, 5 maki (rolls). All very good. And very good house sake. If you order the less expensive items, it is very reasonable. (It was $62/pp including tip and tax.) Note that there is a chalk board with specials, as well as what's on the menu. We go prior to the opera, or ballet, which is around a 10+ minute walk. Most of the diners are not dressed up, however, and do not appear to be going to the civic center, so there isn't the usual pre-performance crush.
Otoro Sushi is a Hayes Valley highlight. Always fresh, always excellent, great service and friendly staff. Can't be beat. Check it out.
Took the girlfriend to Otoro for Valentine's Day. Strongly recommend for future special occasions. Had the live scallops, it was delicious, reminded me of my time in Japan. The waitress was also extremely friendly. Thank you for a great day.
Really delish sushi - there was only one waiter who did her best but couldn't cover the area we were sitting sufficiently but had good recommendations
The fish was really fresh but the rice was a bit dry. The service was good. I really liked the baked mussels, uni rolls(there were two types) and some of the nigiri roles. The green tea cheesecake was a bit disappointing.
service was a bit slow and choppy although it wasn't crowded. Appetizer came quickly but it seemed like 45 minutes before main (sushi) arrived and then all at once...would prefer that it come out separately
Have visited Otoro numerous times, and never disappointed--this meal was again great. Started with simple tempura--their tempura is perfectly done (magic batter?!)--veggies just right & shrimps totally excellent. Next we shared 1 ahi & 1 salmon-topped scallops sushi--both expertly prepared, tasty, fresh as humanly possible and perfectly sliced. Top this off with yummy house sake & green tea cheesecake--impossible to beat! Server very helpful and efficient, too!
This was a really pleasant surprise - this tiny restaurant serves up some really delicious, good quality fish, including selections flown in from Japan. Even the spicy tuna, a roll that is normally just "okay" was outstanding. We did experience a delay in getting seated (the tables weren't turning over as quickly as they should have since diners were lingering) but the staff gave us a free pitcher of beer to make up for it and it made the wait pass quickly! Overall we loved this restaurant and would definitely make this a regular destination.
Greatly understaffed that night, 1 waitress and manager for whole restaurant. 15 minutes to get our drink order (which if we didn't waive them down, could have been longer). Didn't get drink until first dish came and $4 for green tea (yikes!). Sushi was good, beef tongue was ok and chewy, gyoza was tasteless and the cheesecake was small and pricey. In general, I will not be back, too bad.
Very high quality of food, friendly and attentive service.
The only problem for me was a bit too noisy, but that was due to the quantity of young and happy people enjoying a lot.
Very good value and many options in the wide menù.
Otoro is our 'go to' sushi spot. Great sushi/sashimi! Make a reservation. It's rare to walk in and get a table without a long wait. And you'll know why when you have their sushi. Great prep, prevention, quality and taste!
Otoro was fantastic and we would definitely return. It's a little pricey but we weren't disappointed with anything we ordered. It was all super fresh and delicious. HIghly recommend.
Great Sushi, good service, interesting menu, but a bit noisy for conversation
This is a warm little neighborhood gem that has seasonal dishes that are fir for foodies. The staff is attentive and friendly. Dishes like octopus tentacles make it for me! I also love the baby snapper nigiri. They have a nice sake list as well!!
My favorite sushi place in San Francisco. Service is great! Food is amazing and not over priced!
Great find--small, dimly lit neighborhood sushi restaurant with moderate prices, fish was extremely fresh, and the menu--specials in particular--had some fun, creative twists that were terrific. Notable was the lightly seared hamachi toro which included a tiny circle of what appeared to be jalapeno filled with a dollop of hot sauce, along with the stuffed shishito peppers, and the Golden State roll. The fresh scallop was also wonderful. Walking distance to the Orpheum made it a good pre-theater choice.
I come here often. The sushi is fresh and good. And they have all sorts of interesting items flown in from Japan. Not cheap, but wprth it.
I came here with a friend, but thought it would make a great location for a date! The sashimi tasted incredibly fresh, and the service was great. I will definitely return.
Fresh, beautifully presented, delicious sushi and udon noodles. Quiet, unassuming space. Excellent pre-opera venue choice. But somehow they were out of maguro at 6:00 PM on Friday night.
I'm not from san francisco, so I can't compare it to other sushi places in the city. However, they have the best sushi rolls I've had. Even rolls stuffed with ingredients I typically don't like were incredibly delicious. The prices also are reasonable for sushi. To top it off our server was awesome as well.
Loved it. Loved everything. Very attentive staff.
Great place to go before theater and others events in the area.
Excellent food and very good surprise with a third dessert on the house. We were a party of three and ordered two desserts, but then we were offered the third on the house.
Pleasant but not particularly good. One dish, an eggplant dish, was excellent. The rest, appetizers, sushi, all the rest, were rather bland and flavorless, leaving not much of an impression. I will look elsewhere for a meal the next time I go to Symphony.
Great Neighborhood Sushi spot. Fresh ingredients and some unique options. There was only 1 thing that did not live up to the hype, a special, either Tuna or Salmon Popsicles. Rather bland, many other things to order that have a more interesting flavor.
Best sushi ever!!!!
We were surprised to find this restaurant in this street. Hidden under trees in a row of houses we discovered that this excellent sushi restaurant was a small jewel. The small restaurant was fully booked. To get a table for more than two persons, you need to make reservations.
We had several choices of sushi. Further a bowl of noodles (too much for one person) and chicken. We set at the bar just in front of the Japanse chef creating the most exquise sushi dishes. In the kitchen behind the curtains all warm/hot dishes were prepared. The food was excellent. A Japanse beer to start with and a glass of great sake made the evening perfect. The restaurant has a great sake wine list.
