Contemporary American
Otium is a contemporary restaurant that draws from the rich culinary heritage of Timothy Hollingsworth. It is designed to be a social restaurant with a dramatic open kitchen merging indoor and outdoor spaces. The restaurant’s name, Otium, has its roots in Latin. A word that is meant to emphasize a place where time can be spent on leisurely social activities, both eating and drinking; adjacent to one of Los Angeles" most important cultural streets—Grand Avenue—and next to its newest, most vibrant addition, the contemporary art museum, The Broad. The restaurant draws inspiration from the 100-year-old olive trees planted in Broad Plaza by utilizing rustic cooking with live fire and sustainable ingredients grown in the garden of the restaurant’s mezzanine. Otium strips away the rigid formalities of dining while focusing on the quality of food, warm service, and relaxed casual ambience.

I took 5 customers there for a business lunch. We ordered several items for the table and shared them. Everyone said they really enjoyed the food. Our service was very good and we were able to discuss business with such a large group with no problem due to the low noise level.

We headed here after touring the Broad and we were so glad we did. The ambiance and the food were excellent. Loved the shared plate concept which gave us lots of good tastes. The pesto rigatoni was some of the best pesto I’ve ever tried. This is a gem of a place.

Service & food were both outstanding. The whole snapper is a must!!! We shared a lot dishes & each were fabulous. All 7 people in our party thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Perfect ending to a day at The Broad museum.

The restaurant offers great food, the space is fantastic. The price is in the higher end i.e. $200 for brunch for two people (includes two cocktails and two glasses of wine). The service should be much better, both waiters and hostess needs polish. The restaurant itself should be much cleaner. The impression we got is that there's lack of leadership on the restaurant floor.

TLDR: Easiest 5/5 I've ever given. One of the, if not the best restaurant experience I've had thus far. Food is incredible - can't go wrong selecting a random option off the menu. Service is top-notch - friendly, helpful, and really wrapped up the entire experience. Noise level was perfect - loud enough to where you aren't listening to other people's conversations, yet are still able to easily and comfortably chat with your table.

Review:
One of the big issues with going to a hyped-up restaurant for the first time is that there are some pretty high expectations to meet. Unfortunately, more often than not, the raving reviews amount to an underwhelming experience. After Chef Tim Hollingsworth ended up winning 'Final Table', I felt like this place was worth a look and just visited to celebrate a birthday in the family.

Can I just start by saying...Wow. It's the first thing I said when I stepped through the door and what we were all saying as we left. A really open kitchen that you literally walk through to get to the restroom. I felt like there were a couple close calls between staff and individuals walking through, but well-worth the risk to see everything happening up close. A really beautiful restaurant that is well spaced out, plenty of lighting, and a moderate noise level to where we could hear each other talking for once when going to one of these 'fancy' restaurants, and incredible food. While it has portion sizes that you're used to for an upscale restaurant such as this, this was the first time I've left truly satisfied. For 4 of us we ordered 5 appetizers and 3 entrees (one which 'counts' as two). If you're into dessert, try that cinnamon ice-cream and their chocolate butter bar thing.

I'll 100% be back.

My wife and I have eaten here at this restaurant on numerous occasions and have enjoyed each and every time. The Black Cod is absolutely delicious and well worth the price. The hamachi is also quite good. This restaurant has something for everyone due to its diversified menu. I would recommend this place to anyone who appreciates really good food.

My son and I celebrated the fact that he is cancer free 12 years after his initial diagnosis. He was 17 when he was diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma. It was a beautiful day and everything was delicious. The oysters were sublime, the Danobe was outstanding, and the pop tart and desserts were amazing. Our waiter, Matthew, was so attentive and gracious.

Went for lunch and sat outside which was really lovely.
People all around us ordered the roasted potatoes , but seemed like too much food for us.
Had the hamachi and the little gem salad. Both excellent. The chicken breast we got with the salad was cooked beautifully.

Next time will come back with more people so we can try more things!

Came here to celebrate my birthday. Had watched The FinalTable on TV and wanted to try some of winner Timothy Hollingsworth’s creations. We ordered the nan, kampachi and uni for starters. The nan was doughy and soft. Loved it. The kampachi was in a tamarind sauce which complemented the fish. The uni was a disappointment. We couldn’t taste the uni and the crunchy rice was greasy. My 11 year old had the pork chop which was juicy and flavorful. My hubby had the sea bass; the skin was crispy but very salty. I had the black cod, which was the winning dish on The Final Table. The cod was delicious but the accompaniments were just so-so. The pavlova with strawberry ice cream had a nice crackle to it and the ice cream was delicious. Refills on drinks other than water were slow. Overall a fair restaurant but was expecting more of a wow factor. It says something when my favorite dish of the dinner was the nan.

The food started out ok but got worse as the courses went on... our server seemed overwhelmed and made several mistakes. The server at next table was very informative and engaged so we heard about the menu by eves dropping. I really should not have to wait over 30 minutes for my one glass of wine while the sommeliers are wasting space walking around and behaving superior in their non-superior and unprofessional attire. After cancelling the nocchi that the server or kitchen forgot- we asked for dessert. Unfortunately, dessert took a dive and my guest and I both decided to send it back and end our disappointing journey at Otium. I’ve waited too long to try this restaurant- it let me down in such a way that I will no longer follow the chefs on tv- epic failure ... once again at a celebrity chef owned restaurant.

A can't miss here.. everything is fantastic. Just sit back and enjoy . This is what you want in a dining experience. Epic birthday dinner! Everything we had was fantastic.. Hands down the best thing was the customer service we had from our waiter Jason.. he made our dining experience magical. The food is the star, but Jason is the ringmaster.. thank you for making my birthday dinner excellent. The bucatini was life changing.. that egg yolk.! Wow. The black cod was beautiful. The fresh naan pairs perfect with the truffle butter. The A 5 wagyu was a flavor explosion. Scallops were cooked perfectly. The spotted shrimp prawns with a perfect grilled lemon took me back to my childhood having beach bbq's in Baja California, Mexico. Cant wait to come back to see what's new ... see you soon!

Our experience at otium was rather disappointing. We waited for over 15 minutes at our table before a server (not our server) noticed that no one greeted us nor took our order. He was lovely and said he would help us. However, after that we continued to wait a very long time for each dish. The longest wait without any food on our table was over 20 minutes. At this time the lovely server we had was also nowhere in sight so we asked someone else to check our food. He never came back to us. Im not sure why the service was bad since it was a Wednesday evening and the restaurant was not full.

We wanted to like the food but all dishes were way too salty and portions were tiny. The Spanish pasta dish was only appetizer sized, priced at $28, and was too salty. The Arugula salad was extremely salty. The octopus was also very salty. We thought everything was too salty except the New York strips which were tender and cooked right. The famous black cod featured on the show Final Table was fairly good but really not memorable. Overall i think the service, food quality and value were all lacking. We liked the atmosphere but we probably won’t return.

Everything was great. I took a star off because the server seemed annoyed that we didn't spend more than $130. After I signed and left a 20% tip, he whisked by and grabbed the check folder without even glancing at us...no "thank you" or anything. He didn't even look our way. Odd, because he was quite nice at first. Maybe he was busy, but it was a Tuesday night, and how much time does a simple Thank You take?

The food is fantastic. Their biggest problems seem to be hostesses who tend to be snobbish, unwelcoming and dismissive of guests. The serving process sometimes seems chaotic. This is a place for excellent food but it not a relaxing, welcoming or serene dining experience.
