Hostess was rude, slow, aloof, inept. We had a reservation, half of restaurant was empty still took 10 minutes to be seated.
When finally seated it took 20 minutes to speak to a waitress. There was a waitress assistant who brought water and a basket of bread. Waitress attempted to take entree, drink, and appetizer order upon first conversation. Before putting in the order she explained the entire menu to another 6 top table. All told it took 45 minutes before we got drinks. We did complain to a manager but the service did not really get any faster or more courteous. He did comp a round of drinks but it’s beside the point for me. The service was TERRIBLE!
As for the food? I ordered the snapper with some sort of mushrooms. There were a couple people who ordered the scallops and pasta, and others who got the seafood papardelle. None of it was seasoned properly, the snapper was dry and yet somehow mushy, scallops were seared only on one side and had textural issues. Appetizers were not great either, the oyster selections felt like they were an attempt at appeasement for people who actually like seafood, not selections made based on a love and understanding of the mollusk. They also brought chimichurri, mignonette, hot sauce, horseradish, but no citrus with the oysters.
This place was incredibly bad. Regardless of the price, I’d rather eat Long John Silvers than the food I got, and the service/managers reaction was garbage.
This experience is executing a con job on tourists walking by. They should start over, retrain the kitchen and wait staff, redecorate, change the name, and get a new menu, because what they are doing is terrible.
Always love coming here. Seafood plateau is great seafood meal for one person even though it says two. Oysters were good. Love gulf coast style ones the best. Clams were ok. Calamari was awesome, almost a sweet maple syrup hint. Seafood pappardelle was good, chunky lobster and crabs meat. Scallops were buttery and thick. Great place to people watch since its right on the riverwalk. Only river restaurant that is actually good, most are below average tourist spots. I always come out of there with a higher bill than I think it should be but I guess thats the tourist tax and location rent I’m paying. Id come back more often if it wasn’t so pricey.
Food great, nice place, but need more servers. Service was really slow.
The sea food papardelle was fantastic and the service was outstanding.
Delicious food and an outstanding and creative menu. Nicholas took very good care of us!
We had a last minute meal for a large party and they did us right. Great food and wine.
Great night except would have been charged for an extra entree if we hadn’t checked bill.
Food was cold (fish) and overcooked
The food was good, but the service was very, very slow
Drinks are $$...food is ok...service and ambiance were freat
Very pleasant and helpful staff, exceelent seafood. Great sauces for the oysters on the half shell. Every part of the meal was excellent.
I ate here several years ago and was again very satisfied with the whole experience.
The food was delicious, perfect proportions and creative cocktails.
Seating comfortable, lighting just right!
We will be back in the summer.
We hope you will consider opening an Ostra in Houston.
We had 8 in our group, everyone enjoyed the food and drink. Everyone ate everything on their plate.
Birthday dinner. Amazing.
Great service by staff and food was great.
Canadian oysters fresh and shucked properly, preserving oysters juices so we could fully enjoy the beautiful brine. Service adequate. Main course of Barramundi was meh. Slightly over cooked. 1st Martini not as cold as should be. Had to request a glass to be pre-chilled for second one. All in all, Ostra has been consistently average every time we go. Things unfortunately never get better,, but thankfully not worse either. Deserts continued this as well.
We made use of the Restaurant Week menu to try out this place. It was a very good experience - the food and wine were both excellent and the service was great.
We ate there just on the Riverwalk after a musical at the Majestic Theatre (highly recommend this amazingly restored venue). It is mainly a seafood restaurant and we enjoyed all those dishes (Ahi, redfish and the seafood pappardelle). The side dish of Brussells sprouts were a surprise big hit! Mussels also terrific.
Service was wonderful and attentive. My friends had a wonderful time.
We visited Ostra on New Years Eve, looking for a special night out in a convenient location. Overall, it was very good, but not quite "outstanding", especially considering the price. The complimentary NYE champagne was a nice touch and got us off to a good start. Our waitress was very friendly, but she was also serving a very large group in a private room, so she would disappear for long stretches, making the service a little slow. The food was very good, but again not outstanding. We both had gumbo to start - it had a smoky dark roux base and was very good, but not our favorite style. We order different fish dishes, both of which were very good - the presentation was excellent and the fish itself was very good.
Excellent spot for our NYE dinner date. Our waiter, Jesse, was very attentive and engaging. Food was excellent (we had the scallops and crab cakes as main courses). Highly recommend!
We came here for an early New Years Eve dinner. They had the regular menu, and not prix set. So this review is based on their regular menu.
The service was great, but the Chardonnay options were subpar.
There were so many different people that came to our table to take orders and deliver drinks and food, that it never felt personal.
After we got our drinks, we ordered the wedge salad as an appetizer. My boyfriend said it was so so, but was the worst / sloppiest presentation he’s seen.
Then we ordered dinner. He got the ahi tuna, which was terrible. The color was nothing we’ve seen before, and the “seared” edges were overlooked and rubbery. He hardly ate any of it.
I ordered the crab cake and tuna tacos for dinner. The crab cake was very good, but the tacos were overpowered by the fried shells.
We did not get dessert.
I do not understand how this place is rated so high, which is a bummer bc it’s in a great location.
We definitely will not be returning to this restaurant.
Great food and nice atmosphere. Only complain was that it took a long time for our entres to come out but the restaurant offered complimentary soup while we were waiting.
Service was unusually lacking for such a high end restaurants. Food was adequate. Probably came at a bad time, due to a busy week.
All was good. Great food/service
My wife and I went to Ostra for a date night and we were impressed with the food and service. John, our waiter, was attentive and had an impressive memory of the menu. I ordered the chef's special of the day, an exceptional composition of Grouper fish with a wonderful accompaniment. Everything about our experience was pleasant and we would definitely recommend it.
We live in San Antonio and rarely go downtown to eat because the restaurants are generally not very good. But we wanted to see the Christmas lights so we decided to try Ostra because it had decent reviews. How other diners could give it more than a couple of stars is beyond me. The food was mediocre and very overpriced. My “grilled” crab legs were cooked but cold. My husband’s pork tenderloin was tough and over cooked. The service was abysmal! And they were not very busy. We’ll never go there again.
Food was not good. My children wouldn't eat bc was so not good. Very disappointed.
Christmas Eve dinner with family. Beautiful location on the Riverwalk. Host was very accommodating as he allowed us to move to different table due to draft. Food was excellent, although our service was weak. One side dish never arrived, and our waiter seemed to disappear halfway through meal. All in all a good meal. I’ll go back a give service a second chance.
Service was mediocre. Food was good
One of my favorite dining experiences in San Antonio. Excellent food, drinks, service, and ambiance. Great spot right on the Riverwalk.
We had 14 people in our group. We were celebrating Christmas after seeing a show at the theatre. I had made reservations but the show let out earlier than we expected. No problem. Our table was ready and waiting for us even though we arrived before scheduled time.
The service was amazing. Very attentive staff.
Food was delicious.
We had a great time and even though the food was a 5 star we didn't feel like we had to be extremely quiet like in some restaurants.
I would definitely recommend this place.
Nice river walk ambiance. Would definitely go again
We were able to snag the private room (without requesting it) which was a blessing for our family and everyone in the restaurant. We had 4 kids with us (2 in high chairs) so it was a good decision for the waitstaff to make! The food was amazing: raw oysters, grilled fish, chowder, seafood pasta were all among our orders.
We ordered the calamari and the fryer broke so the manager came out to inform us and offered us a free dozen oysters and the waiter gave me one free cocktail for it, also. Great service!
Wait staff very attentive. Food good. Expensive for what I got.
I initially was looking for a restaurant that could accommodate 9 people within 2 hours. This was the only place that showed up. It’s on the Riverwalk and it was within walking distance of our hotel. It was so good I booked it the next night for a group of 8. The food was again great. The fish fresh. As we were sitting outside the next night a group of people we knew was walking by and I told them it was really good and based on my recommendation their group of 8 went inside and had dinner! I am surprised that the restaurant isn’t busier.
Very interesting location on Riverwalk, comfortable seating , the service was relaxed not pushy have had better fried oysters but main dishes were fantastic
I was there for thanksgiving, menu very limited, surprised the "service charge" is included in the bill, the tip is always based on the service received, on the other hand the waitress was very knowledgable, and professional.
Thanksgiving dinner. All food was room temperature. Sent back and when it returned the plate was hot but the food was not as better. They comped the sparkling wine but not the meal. ??????
We sat by the window on a chilly evening...next best thing to being outside for people watching. Ambiance was nice, our server excellent, restaurant was not noisy. Oysters, scallops were delicious! Great wine list. Would definitely return!!
