Ostra at Mokara Hotel & Spa Ratings and Reviews
I ate here several years ago and was again very satisfied with the whole experience.
The food was delicious, perfect proportions and creative cocktails.
Seating comfortable, lighting just right!
We will be back in the summer.
We hope you will consider opening an Ostra in Houston.
Canadian oysters fresh and shucked properly, preserving oysters juices so we could fully enjoy the beautiful brine. Service adequate. Main course of Barramundi was meh. Slightly over cooked. 1st Martini not as cold as should be. Had to request a glass to be pre-chilled for second one. All in all, Ostra has been consistently average every time we go. Things unfortunately never get better,, but thankfully not worse either. Deserts continued this as well.
We ate there just on the Riverwalk after a musical at the Majestic Theatre (highly recommend this amazingly restored venue). It is mainly a seafood restaurant and we enjoyed all those dishes (Ahi, redfish and the seafood pappardelle). The side dish of Brussells sprouts were a surprise big hit! Mussels also terrific.
We visited Ostra on New Years Eve, looking for a special night out in a convenient location. Overall, it was very good, but not quite "outstanding", especially considering the price. The complimentary NYE champagne was a nice touch and got us off to a good start. Our waitress was very friendly, but she was also serving a very large group in a private room, so she would disappear for long stretches, making the service a little slow. The food was very good, but again not outstanding. We both had gumbo to start - it had a smoky dark roux base and was very good, but not our favorite style. We order different fish dishes, both of which were very good - the presentation was excellent and the fish itself was very good.
We came here for an early New Years Eve dinner. They had the regular menu, and not prix set. So this review is based on their regular menu.
The service was great, but the Chardonnay options were subpar.
There were so many different people that came to our table to take orders and deliver drinks and food, that it never felt personal.
After we got our drinks, we ordered the wedge salad as an appetizer. My boyfriend said it was so so, but was the worst / sloppiest presentation he’s seen.
Then we ordered dinner. He got the ahi tuna, which was terrible. The color was nothing we’ve seen before, and the “seared” edges were overlooked and rubbery. He hardly ate any of it.
I ordered the crab cake and tuna tacos for dinner. The crab cake was very good, but the tacos were overpowered by the fried shells.
We did not get dessert.
I do not understand how this place is rated so high, which is a bummer bc it’s in a great location.
We definitely will not be returning to this restaurant.
My wife and I went to Ostra for a date night and we were impressed with the food and service. John, our waiter, was attentive and had an impressive memory of the menu. I ordered the chef's special of the day, an exceptional composition of Grouper fish with a wonderful accompaniment. Everything about our experience was pleasant and we would definitely recommend it.
We live in San Antonio and rarely go downtown to eat because the restaurants are generally not very good. But we wanted to see the Christmas lights so we decided to try Ostra because it had decent reviews. How other diners could give it more than a couple of stars is beyond me. The food was mediocre and very overpriced. My “grilled” crab legs were cooked but cold. My husband’s pork tenderloin was tough and over cooked. The service was abysmal! And they were not very busy. We’ll never go there again.
Christmas Eve dinner with family. Beautiful location on the Riverwalk. Host was very accommodating as he allowed us to move to different table due to draft. Food was excellent, although our service was weak. One side dish never arrived, and our waiter seemed to disappear halfway through meal. All in all a good meal. I’ll go back a give service a second chance.
We had 14 people in our group. We were celebrating Christmas after seeing a show at the theatre. I had made reservations but the show let out earlier than we expected. No problem. Our table was ready and waiting for us even though we arrived before scheduled time.
The service was amazing. Very attentive staff.
Food was delicious.
We had a great time and even though the food was a 5 star we didn't feel like we had to be extremely quiet like in some restaurants.
I would definitely recommend this place.
We were able to snag the private room (without requesting it) which was a blessing for our family and everyone in the restaurant. We had 4 kids with us (2 in high chairs) so it was a good decision for the waitstaff to make! The food was amazing: raw oysters, grilled fish, chowder, seafood pasta were all among our orders.
We ordered the calamari and the fryer broke so the manager came out to inform us and offered us a free dozen oysters and the waiter gave me one free cocktail for it, also. Great service!
I initially was looking for a restaurant that could accommodate 9 people within 2 hours. This was the only place that showed up. It’s on the Riverwalk and it was within walking distance of our hotel. It was so good I booked it the next night for a group of 8. The food was again great. The fish fresh. As we were sitting outside the next night a group of people we knew was walking by and I told them it was really good and based on my recommendation their group of 8 went inside and had dinner! I am surprised that the restaurant isn’t busier.
Service was great...order taken promptly...food was served hot...we both enjoyed our meals...seafood pappardelle and ahi tuna...serenaded during our meal by wandering singers...enjoyed this....waiter recommended bread pudding for dessert which the 2 of us shared and enjoyed....highly recommend!!!
Fabulous, we were in San Antonio three nights. Our first night and our last night we had dinner here. Fresh oysters and clams, wow. Lobster tails, Alaskan King crab legs, mahi-mahi all excellent. Desserts were soooo good. Service was great. Expensive but worth every penny!
I had never had Barramundi fish before but it was well prepared, mild, white, flakey fish with pork rosutto and charred green onion emulsion and crispy Brussels sprouts. My wife had the blackened red with converse gristmill polenta, wilted spinach and roasted tomato all done to her liking. Good presentation and a delicious meal.
Situated on the river walk with that touristy feel we should of known that the restaurant expects one and done" meaning you eat here once and then never go back. This is probably the case for many visitors to San Antonio. In our case it was due to mediocre service with a 10 minute wait for Coca Cola and I'm not kidding an Oyster PO Boy presented with one half sandwich with three fried oysters and cold French fries. To be fair the sandwich was replaced with a new one containing two halves. The manager did apologize with words and not deeds. Paid the check and left. Never to return.
