Osteria Via Stato Ratings and Reviews
We made reservations at Osteria as we were staying at the Embassy Suites adjacent to it and were looking for a good Italian dinner on our last night. Based on reviews, we selected this restaurant. They seated us even though we were 15 mins early, and our waiter was excellent! I had their fresh green salad ..... delicious! And their penne pasta in a spicy red sauce with chicken .... excellent! My friend chose the mixed green salad with chicken and raved about it. It was huge .... it’s a main course salad, so beware if you plan to have a protein along with it. He also had the ribeye and commented on how excellent it was. We enjoyed our meal and would recommend them. The ribeye was a bit pricey, but then again it was ~15 oz.
Waitress was really boring and not interested in making our dinning experience fun and enjoyable. She just wanted us to order eat and leave..... the manager made it more enjoyable but really if you don't want to be apart of an enjoyable experience serving great people then
Find a new career.
My husband and I went to Osteria Via Stato to celebrate our 33rd anniversay. We wanted an early dinner (5:00 pm), since we were going to a play directly after. We were seated immediately (we made reservations on OpenTable), and were given a cosy, quiet table in an alcove. Our waiter was friendly and helpful, and provided excellent service to us, suggesting a moderately priced bottle of wine that perfectly complimented our dinner. We were pleased and surprised when we were brought a small plate of meatballs and red sauce, along with roasted garlic in oil and a basket of bread. Our appetizer choice of parmesan crusted sweet onions was delicious. Our entrees, my husband had a pumpkin ravioli in sage-butter sauce, and I had roasted chicken thighs with a winter panzenella salad, were excellent. Some complimentary and celebratory gelato was the perfect end of our meal. I so enjoy this restaurant: no tv's, no annoyingly loud music--just good food and excellent service.
Have been here several times and it never disappoints. Short ribs are one of my all time favorite meals. Many great food options, which change a little every time depending on the season, but always great. Service is great. A great value - great food but not outrageous prices.
Osteria Via Stato is a solid choice for a pleasant Italian dinner in River North. It is not the best, the fanciest, or the most genuine, but it is good food, comfortable, reasonably priced, and well served.
I ordered CACIO E PEPE, a spaghetti first course with pecorino cheese and black pepper, and a seafood "stew"/cioppino with scallops, shrimp, and fish. My wife ordered the pickled beet salad, with walnuts and gorgonzola, and the evening's risotto special, which featured beef short ribs .
Surprisingly, the beet salad was the best dish that we ordered. A generous portion of beets, nicely pickled, with plenty of walnuts, cheese, and arugula.
The fisherman's stew was good. The scallops and shrimp were perfectly done, the salmon and other fish was very good. I was a little disappointed by the broth, which could have had some additional seasoning. The first course, Cacio e Pepe, was very close to comfort food-like a really good, gooey macaroni and cheese, with spaghetti as the pasta. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but it was by no means a "gourmet" dish.
The risotto was a bit soupy and little overly salty, but again, it was very good, with plenty of short ribs.
The wine list at OVS offers many great Italian wine choices at various price points. They also offer wine by the glass and 1/2 liter, and we found a reasonable red Barbera that was served in a mezzolitere (sp?) and that gave us both about 2 glasses, which was just what we wanted.
We ordered a dessert that sounded just right, but the waiter returned with bad news that there was none left. I didn't need it anyway. The Intelligentsia coffee ended the evening well.
Service was good, not rushed at all, always available, and knowledgeable about the menu.
We enjoyed the evening. This was not the highest quality, home-made Italian food that can be found in Chicago. But overall, it was a good value and very well prepared and served. A good choice in River North, convenient to many hotels and venues.
Menu posted on-line was quite different than what was presented in person.
Pasta was fresh and nicely prepared.
Ambiance was more of an upscale pizza place than a fine dining experience, which was more of what I was expecting. Proscuitto was very good.
Wine selections were just OK.
My husband and I have been going to Osteria Via Stato since it opened. I believe Rick Tramonto (of Tru fame) was the executive chef at the time. We were blown away and made return visits frequently in the first couple of years. Our visits have been fewer of late, because we are sampling other new restaurants and following some of the food trends. Osteria Via Stato is not any longer in "trend-setter" mode, but continues to be a solid restaurant, where you can reliably get a very good meal. I would recommend this place for a family event, as they do a nice job of catering to large groups (three were there during this visit).
I've been there before but we weren't very impressed this time. Vegan options were pretty limited despite having a small vegetarian menu. The portions seemed skimpy and the food was not particularly tasty.
I eat out a lot and it seems to me that the LEYE restaurants are slipping. I hope I am wrong about that.
The food was awesome! My wife, who is a picky eater loved everything!
Our server Julie was amazing! She was friendly, and efficient, also very knowledgeable about the menu. It was a pleasure to have Julie as our server!
I wasn't crazy about my wife and I being seated at a giant 6 top table with a partition between us and another couple since this was our wedding anniversary.
Also, the bathroom was a single for both men and women to share. After waiting a bit, I was told I could use the hotel restroom, I was directed to the second floor of the hotel and after walking the floor of the hotel, I never found the bathroom so I went back to the restaurant and waited. These were minor inconveniences, and we will definitely be back.
Brought another couple of friends here for their fist time. reaction is always the same- we mourned the loss of papgus, but this, this is a great restaurant—and why haven’t we tried it sooner. They had such a good time, they rebooked for 3 nights later. The appetizer and pasta menu is fresh, bold and eye popping good—Parma onions and roasted garlic ar dr=target from heaven.
The first seating was terrible as my profile mentions not in a high traffic are or in front of the kitchen and that is where the set up. It was quickly resolved.
The noise level is difficult and needs to be address with some kind of sound absorbing materials.
Overall - good! The food was fantastic! The service was good too! I must say that the wine that went along with the "Dinner Party" menu was quite expensive, considering they are 2oz pours. It was and extra $30 per person, which would not have been too much a shocker if we had been told what the cost would be. Instead we were simply asked if we wanted the wine pairing and were forewarned that they would only be 2oz pours, honestly I thought they were going to be tastings and then we could order a glass if we saw fit. Thankfully, it did seem like the pours were closer to the 4oz per person, so we didn't feel too bad paying the extra $60! Again, I can't stress enough how much we enjoyed the food! But my disappointment is that on 3 separate occasions while communicating with the restaurant prior to our reservations, I mentioned that it was our wedding anniversary and I wanted it to be recognized. Our night out was a gift to my husband, we were blessed enough to have a trip of a lifetime to Italy a couple of years ago and I had heard and read some good things about Osteria, so was excited to introduce this place to my husband...and again, we had a pleasant meal, but for this particular night, it would have been nice to be recognized.
Still, I imagine we may give it another whirl, the food was in fact that good =)
We sat outside and weather was beautiful! We usually sit inside at the bar, so this was much more pleasant given the weather. Our waiter was very attentive, so can't say anything bad about him. For starters,I had the arugula salad..so yummy!! The entree...my husband had the evening special which was risotto, and I had the penne pasta, both were delicious!! For dessert I had the warm bread pudding with bananas, another winner! We eat here a lot, only because the food is consistently good!!
