Terrific spot. Wonderful food, service, and atmostphere. Great fun.
I live in West Marin and look forward to a nice place to dine now and then-
we drive all the way from Stinson, because there really is nothing great here.
9 of us went to Stellina for a special occassion.
THE NOISE WAS SO LOUD NO ONE COULD HEAR ANYONE SPEAKING.
THIS IS THE 3RD TIME I HAVE HAD THIS EXPERIENCE-
AND MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE --
I JUST THOUGHT MAYBE SOMETHING WOULD CHANGE.
HONESTLY--IT IS JUST TOO LOUD.
A wonderful resturant. The quality of food was extraordinary. The ambiance was informal, the service attentive but unobtrusive. You go here for great local ingredients, treated with respect, restraint and a dash of creativity. The food was all of that. The sole was unbelievably fresh, perfectly cooked in a preparation that enhanced its salty, delicate but robust flavor. It tasted like the ocean itself, which is a wonderful thing. The briased beef was equally wonderful. Great zabaglione. A great dining experience. Highly recommended.
What we experienced was a restaurant that bragged on its green and local food base -- but did a poor job of preparing the food. Everything looked and tasted as if it had been prepared on one short-order grill without separating or changing the oil/grease. A really good piece of salmon was overdone so that it was less satisfying than a well prepared piece of farmed salmon.
We had eaten here before and were quite unhappy with how it has gone downhill from just two years previous. Gone are the local wines (hello? russian river, napa, sonoma?) replaced with italian wines with big markups. Italian! really what about local sourcing! The service has become snooty (they hung up on me when I called on a saturday night! Rude! The food is still excellent but has doubled in price over two years, with no improvement in quality which was already excellent. All in all I thought I had found a gem, but it's just too greedy and doesn't support local wineries. Wont go back.
My idea of a perfect resturant; lovely drive through gorgeous country, small intimate comfortable space, welcoming atmosphere , and fabulous locally sourced food. Our waiter was competent, friendly but not intrusive, adding to the total enjoyment of the meal.
Dessert was the best part of the meal. Our entrees tried hard but were somewhat bland. Ingredients were top notch - local and fresh.
Lots of people there - obviously good reputation. Maybe a slightly off night for the kitchen.
There's nothing like taking a hike in Pt. Reyes and then having fabulous meal at Osteria Stellina!
Their GBD (Golden Brown Delicious)cheese sandwich is always great especially if you add the onions and lamb pieces.
I was not overly impressed, felt that it was overrated. I had heard great things and therefore was slightly disappointed. Wine list was good and the staff was knowledgeable.
After hearing so much about this restaurant, we decided to try it. Not that spectacular, really. Good service but not that inspirational menu.
Also, $9.00 for a baby gems salad????? And the little baby leaves were cut up! Really!
Incredible as always....all 4 of us ordered variations of the beef brisket...out of this world!
Great octopus, boring pest - nomgarlic, pine nuts, greatnpizza
Way too noisy
totally enjoyed it twice in three days
Great place for local Point Reyes produce!
Great small town dining . Loved the oysters !
Be sure to check whether any large groups will be at the restaurant when you are. Our dinner was very negatively impacted by the raucous noise of a wedding party of 3 large tables that took up more than 1/2 of the small, intimate dining space. It was impossible to talk or even hear the waiters with the cacophony of loud party voices; the noise was almost painful. Much as I enjoyed the fresh & unusual food combinations (tiny roasted peppers with uni appetizer; goat shoulder entree) our overall dining experience was negative.
Very good service but the food was so salty that I could not enjoy it. We told the waiter to advise the kitchen. The salt was throughout from sauces to veggies.
Excellent innovative food in a casual atmosphere where hikers fresh off the trail will feel welcome in their hiking boots and jeans. Be sure to try some of the small plates, for example the cannellini beans and chard or the beet and strawberry salad. We were happy with two of the main courses we tried (pork osso bucco, salmon). The double order of sole was presented (and beautiful), then whisked away for deboning. The other diners had to let their food cool while we waited for the fish to return. The sole came back still full of bones but nicely cooked and seasoned. Accompaniments to that dish were underwhelming. Dessert (pine nut financier) was outstanding. Overall, we loved it and definitely plan to return.
We had lunch over the Memorial weekend, fava salad made with the leaves of the plant was tasty. We split a pear, pesto pizza which suffered from too much hot pepper, it overpowered the sweetness of the pear. One of my friends had the rhubarb dessert and the other one had the chocolate custard and I had the ice cream sandwich. The ice cream was sassafras and had a medicinal taste to it, the cookies were rich with nuts, I couldn't finish it. However the chocolate custard was superb all the components harmonized, the same was true of the rhubarb . I would go back as the atmosphere is casual yet refined and try some more of the starters and main entrees.
We were looking forward to dining here, especially because the restaurant is on Michael Bauer's (SF Chronicle) "Top 100" list. The filet of sole (for two) was delicious and we highly recommend it. Some of the other courses were just "OK." The slow-cooked baby octopus was very tender, but tasted a bit too "fishy." The service seemed very rushed and the frenetic pace might have contributed to my husband receiving (TWICE) gluten-containing products with his food. This is after we specified that he needed gluten-free when making the reservation AND discussing it with the server. This made us wonder whether the chefs/servers really know what to do for gluten-free - worrisome for those with a medical need for gluten-free meals.
Had a great meal for our anniversary. Service was prompt and friendly and the food was fresh and interesting. Had mussels, octopus and then the sole to two. Spectacularly good!
The food, especially the appetizers, has slipped a notch or maybe even two.
I was very disappointed with Stellina. This is my 2nd time there and I think the hype is what keeps people coming back, not the food. My dish was pretty boring, I could have made it at home for much less money.
I've enjoyed eating at Stellina three times and hope todo so again soon. The food is fresh with just enough edge to be interesting, but not pretentious.
Pros - food is very good, straightforward menu. Cons - waitstaff is woefully undertrained. Unable to answer questions about the menu, never once refilled our wine glasses once after opening the bottle & don't even think about bringing your children. Our request for our children to modify a pasta dish down to just pasta & butter was denied. Same with request to modify pizza down just a cheese pizza. Really?! Noise is off the charts - conversation across the table was difficult.
Food is outstanding because it is organic and fresh. A pleasure!
Truly enjoyed my food and service. The only down side to the restaurant is that the noise level is way too high. I discovered this as i was yelling across the table at my girlfriend. They need someone to deal with the sound levels. Everything else was wonderful.
We were very pleasantly surprised and had anenjoyable dinner. Excellenent, with lots of good advice.
One of my favorite restaurants in bay area. Every dish is delicious.
They had a special the night we went...pan seared sweet potato gnocchi with a garlic and herb olive oil and it was to die for. And the prices are super reasonable. After hiking through pt. Reyes all day this was the perfect place to relax.
Food was very good and I love that West Marin has a great dining spot. Hope they live up to their potential — plan to go again and hope for a better service experience.
We make it a special point to link together a long beach walk with dinner at Stellina --- makes for a perfect outing for us. Stellina has the just right combination of great food, unusual menu and friendler dinners.
Great use of seasonal local produce, meats, etc...excellent quality overall!
Great place in a special location. Before a trip to the beach - perfect!
I love Osteria Stellina. It's lovely inside without being fancy or off-putting. The food is always tremendous and there are oddball but delicious things on the menu. My friends all had goat that night, which was delicious. It's a very reliable place for casual drop by or a special event. Love Osteria Stellina.....go there every time I'm in Pt Reyes Station.
Warm ambience and tasteful decor. Wait staff was sporadic, forgetful, and inattentive. Host was expedient but unwelcoming. The food presentation was attentive and tasted fresh. The bone marrow appetizer was delicious as was the ricotta bruschetta. Regardless, the night was special because of the time spent with a good friend but, overall, the dining was an underwhelming experience. Sorry. Really wanted to like this place.
Great food--tight squeeze with tables close together--waiter was great.
We ate here several times during our stay. The menu is updated as fresh meats, veggies and such were available. There seems to be a heavy push on local produce and products. Meals were generous and tasty. Wide selection of entree items, but they do run out of certain popular choices quickly. All meals were better above average and some I would rate as excellent.
The restaurant is rather small, with limited seating. Lacking somewhat in atmosphere. A table by the streetside window is preferable. A table near the door is NOT!
We had two of the pizzas, the wild mushroom and the oyster, and they were very good with the wild mushroom being the more successful while the oyster pizza could use more oysters. We also had the cheese plate which was very good but perhaps is not such a great value as for $14 you don't get a lot of cheese.
