Osteria al Doge Ratings and Reviews
I've been to Osteria al Doge frequently for businesses lunches and find it consistently very good! The wait staff are very attentive! The fish dishes are especially very creative and always fresh. On my recent visit I had the Orata a Forno ( Sea Bream) and it was excellent! Others at my table had the Stinco di Agnello (Braised Lamb Shank), Linguine al Frutti di Mare and Spaghetti alle Vongole and were very happy with their choices! We also shared a couple of Antipasti - Cozze E Vongole had and Polpo alla Griglia (Grilled Baby Octopus) - which were both excellent - the Octopus melted in your mouth! Lastly the deserts were also very fresh and excellent! You won't be disappointed!
Excellent Food and service. We have been many times and have recommended to others. One suggestion would be for the server to give prices when reading the daily specials. They are usually significantly more than the average menu price, and this would alleviate "surprises" when the bill comes! They were delicious, but we would recommend "full disclosure"!
Thanks for another great meal!
In a word: Wonderful. Though we were there just a bit before the theater crowd would arrive, we were not rushed. Excellent, authentic Italian. Started with Pasta E Fagioli soup which was thick and very flavorful and Insalata Mista (very large for an appetizer). Entrees were Salmone Alla Griglia and the pasta special of Farfalle with salmon. Both excellent. Dined upstairs which was a bit quieter and actually very cozy. It is a bit dark so you may need a flashlight to read the menu. Personable service. Will dined there again.
Excellent food and a good value, but for the first time in many visits here the staff really rushed us. They nevr took a drink order, brought main courses before our first course was finished, tried to whisk away dishes while we were still eating, etc. It was very unpleasant. We had allowed the right amount of time to have a leisurely dinner and get to an 8 pm show, and we were actually finished dinner at 7:03! I would dine there again, as the food is excellent, but I hope we don’t encounter this hurry next time.
To get excellent food and service pre-theater is the exception not the norm in Manhattan. Osteria al Doge delivers both. Our party enjoyed the ravioli special with shrimp, the risotto special with lobster and cherry tomato sauce, fried calamari, a creatively served Caesar salad INSIDE a parmesan crisp shell and an excellent black bass dish. Some truffle shaped meringue bites satisfied the sweet tooth without ordering the meringue cake which looked amazing!
Strategically located in the Theater District, Osteria al Doge provides a perfect option for a truly delectable pre-show meal. The menu had something for all tastes and is complemented by daily specials that cause one’s mouth to water when described. Pricing is very fair for a venue with that location. Our reservation for 4:45 got us there when it was almost empty, but within 30 minutes it was packed. The wait staff was very attentive and answered all questions about our dinner choices. I would not only return in the future, but would also recommend Osteria al Doge without hesitation.
Great place for pre- theatre but this time our fish was fishy and the ravioli/pink sauce was bland. Soups and salads were plentiful and delish. Entrees disappointing which is unusual here. Very crowded but perhaps next time we’ll go w the pizza that looked amazing going by us frequently. Also I ordered my dish without clams and it came with clams.
Excellent shared appetizers of mozzarella & prosciutto and fritto misto. The linguine frutti di mare was tasty if a bit small. Scaloppine Ai Fungi with sauteed spinach and mashed potatoes, excellent. We received calamari griglia instead of our ordered salmon. The calamari was fresh, tasty and the minor mishap handled very professionally by the manager. The wait staff efficient and correctly trained. The Rosso Montepulciano wine a nice complement to the meal. The owner makes efficient use of the space, if a bit tight. Yullia, our waitress, could not have been more pleasant and accommodating.
We ate here before going to the theatre and finished in an hour and 15 minutes including salads and dessert. The staff was very attentive and were considerate of our time constraints. My only complaint is the waitress would not split our check since we didn’t ask before ordering our drinks. We hgae her several credit cards and had to tell her how much to put on each card. What a pain especially after a few drinks.
I suspect that Osteria al Doge is supported primarily by pre-theater diners. The food is excellent, truly. The grilled octopus is probably the best I've ever had in NYC. The special ravioli was rich, creamy and well balanced with the sweet sausage. The service was attentive and on target. The totality of the experience was marred by the noise level and the crowding. Okay, it's a business and their job is to make money, but my goal is an enjoyable meal in which I can readily converse with my companions and not have to move our table in order to allow other diners to get in or out of their table. A table or two less and some baffling to absorb the noise would raise the experience significantly.
Perfect restaurant for Wed pre-matinee lunch in the heart of the Theater district. Excellent service, delicious food. Just a little crowded because everyone is arriving and leaving at the same time. My friend and I were tucked into a corner so we were able to avoid much of the comings and goings, but the atmosphere is busy. I would definitely eat here again.
