Osso Steakhouse Ratings and Reviews
Should have selected what was recommended to me - the bone in filet. I’m spoiled by home town Chicago steakhouses and selected my favorite cut NY Sirloin. Should have listened to my friend and was disappointed by my pricey steak that was not tender at all. Disappointing. Sides were great and service was great.
We went here for New Years Eve and got one of the last reservations of the night. The staff was attentive and ready to make the special night of celebrations a memorable one. The food was amazing as well as the service. Pricey but more than worth it! I can’t wait to go back my next visit to San Francisco.
We had a 9 pm reservation but table wasn’t ready until almost 10 pm. So, we sat at the bar and ordered food because we were starving. Although the bartender was very friendly and did give us a complimentary glass of champagne, we had to ask for our drinks three times before we got them. I don’t think the issue is with the service but the management- they shouldn’t overbook tables so that everyone has to wait over an hour to be seated. The waiters are just scrambling to keep up. This was the second time we had tried the restaurant and the same thing happened the first time. The food is great though, although it is pricier than other steakhouses in the area. Overall I wouldn’t recommend .
I want to preface this was on New Years Eve so I understand that it’s a busy night but our reservation’s were for 8pm and we were not seated until 8:50. I had ordered an appetizer at the bar while we waited and didn’t come by the time we were seated and had to remind the waiter that we had ordered food at the bar a long time ago. We were given a terrible table in the corner that was so tight the waiter could not even get to us to take our order or bring us our food. I had to reach over another table to get my food from the waiter. We were never offered water and I know San Francisco is all about conservation but they should’ve at least asked us.
Overall the service was very disappointing, even if it was a busy night.
I went there for New Year’s Eve dinner. There were a lot of people. I really hope service is better when restaurant is not busy. BUT most importantly... they need to work on steak. My friend who ordered Rib Eye... it was so tough. I know they are busy but I can tell that they put steak on plate as soon as grilled. They didn’t rest the meat. There are a lot of blood on plates.
If they want to call “steakhouse ,” they need to get a better quality meat.
I may go back there one more time on weekdays. If they fail to give good quality steak again, I wouldn’t go back.
Late dinner, arrived at 9pm. Service was inconsistent: no one ready to greet when arrived & lack of energy to give service during the meal but the waiter advised to not choose a particular cut of steak because of poor quality shipment. Steak was good & tender but the potato & veg for the table was oily. The kettle bread was barely warm. The steak & tequila option not good value. Washroom was outside the restaurant and, at the late hour, the ladies washroom was not clean.
Food was fantastic. Service left a little to be desired, multiple cocktail and wine orders took about 20 minutes to be prepared. When items like butter, water, coffee etc were asked for they were forgotten or took longer than they should to arrive, never an apology and when asked for status of these items the waiter was slightly argumentative and dismissive. Tables were extremely close together. Though the restaurant was quiet you can easily over hear the conversation at the table next to you and you might have to move/get up to allow someone from another table to get up/pass. Worth it for the food but the service might have me going back to Morton’s or Ruth’s Chris.
We have eaten here twice. The first time the service was lackluster but the food very good. The second time was on Christmas Day. Service was much better and the cocktails and food were outstanding. The ambiance of Osso's is hard to beat for an urban SF steakhouse with a view of Grace Cathedral and the neighborhood offering a pleasant walking experience after dinner.
I was debating on writing this review because it was Christmas Eve and they were very busy. However, there are some notable points I think will be helpful for the restaurant to know as well as possible guests. First off, stop taking reservations if you are over booked to the point that your existing reservations are waiting 45 min+ for their table. Just stop! You are pushing your staff to the point of failure, which is exactly what happened. Your host did not even look up at me while I was standing in front of her trying to get her attention to check in for my reservation she was that swamped! She just muttered she will call me when my table is ready and walked away. How did she know who I was when she didn't even look up at me? With a lobby full of people, an hour before closing time, I was concerned to say the least. I will say the bartender, gentleman who seated us, our waiter and busser were all very nice - unfortunately, that didn't make up for the terrible service. Soup came out without spoons. Our waiter never returned to get our wine order, just sent the food out as quickly as possible to rush us through our meal. I wanted to enjoy a different wine with my appetizers then with my steaks - impossible when you are being SO IGNORED. I had to get up TWICE during my meal - once to ask for silverware and another to ask to order a bottle of wine! With price points this high I should not have to ask for proper service or a proper coursing of our meal, absolutely not. The kicker was, we barely ate half of our steaks and sides because we got full and asked to take them home. Couple of espressos to finish our meal and then we left. I was distracted by my complete disappointment in what should have been a wonderful holiday dinner that we left before realizing our leftovers never returned to us! What a total disappointment and waste of money, I will never return.
Classy with excellent steaks! Christmas Eve was very busy, but they did a nice job of getting us seated just a little after our reservation. Bar was busy and bartender was helpful with drinks and dinner suggestions. Service and food delivery was not delayed, even with the volume of customers.
Definitely a lovely place to celebrate!
I was so excited to try this steakhouse and was hoping to add it as a favorite to our list but was very disappointed. Our reservation were set for 7:45PM. We got there a few minutes early to check in. Once we checked it, the hostess told us that she'll call our name when our table was ready. Since we had reservations, we didn't think it would take too long. After 30 minutes had passed, we still were not seated, so we asked the hostess if she could let us know how much longer we should expect for our table. She replied and told us there were 6 other tables ahead of us! I asked her if she can give us a time frame for that and she rudely said No. We waited another 15 -20 minutes before we were seated. They staff were not apologetic at all although it was clear that they had overbooked or had completely mismanaged their timing.
After we ordered our food, our chorizo bread and salad came out surprisingly fast. We were pretty happy about this as we were starving at this point. About 15 minutes later, the server came by and asked us if we would like for him to box up our leftover chorizo bread. Assuming our main course was about to follow our appetizers, we said sure. Our main entree (rib eye steak) did not come out for another 30 minutes! We had to ask a wait staff to check on our order since it was taking so long. During this whole time, not one server or anyone came by to ask us if we would like refills on our water or drinks (which was empty by this time). The food was also VERY mediocre at best. We were watching the rest of the guests in the restaurant as well and noticed all of their tables were not attended to as well. A couple next to us was brought out their desserts but did not have any utensils. They had to wait about 10 minutes before they could flag someone down to get them utensils for them to eat. Needless to say, we won't be back.
30 min wait to be seated but it was Christmas Eve!! And matrix'd was quite accommodating which made the evening start off nicely. The food was excellent..highlight was bone in rib eye which could have easily fed four..and was perfectly cooked. Cocktails very generous.
Our family dined at Osso Steakhouse on December 24, 2017. I read prior reviews on Open Table about the service being inadequate, but I discounted them because time was not an issue for us. The prior reviews do not pale in comparison to the horrors you will experience if you choose to dine at Osso. First, OPEN TABLE should remove this restaurant from its website. There are too many complaints about this restaurant. Second, it’s not just the service that is inadequate, it’s the chef and kitchen management that do not care about what they put on a plate and call it “edible food.” Here is my review of what we ordered that evening. Osso has wonderful cocktails; so if you are on a liquid diet you are in luck (and that’s where your luck stops). We ordered the kettle bread and muscles. The bread was cold as well as the kettle. The muscles were roasted, which made them dry. I don’t recommend this cooking method for muscles. Our second course was asparagus soup and Caesar salad. The soup may have been good (at one point in time), but it had a film on top of it because it sat in the bowl for too long. The Caesar salad was something you could pick up at Wendy’s, but it was edible. Our table ordered three bone-in steaks: One New York strip medium, one filet medium, and one filet medium rare. The NY strip was well done; the filets were both rare. In fact, the outside color of the filets were gray, they were not seared, nor was there any seasoning on the filets. On the side we ordered Brussel sprout chips and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was coagulated and hard because it sat too long and was inedible. One filet of beef and the mac and cheese were sent back, and deducted from the bill. Our family will never be in San Francisco again to enjoy the Christmas holiday. We were looking forward to memorable experiences (which we found at other places during our trip), but Osso Steakhouse was not a memorable experience. It was an insult to our taste buds…a culinary disaster.
Osso Steakhouse is a lovely spot for a meal. Dinner menu had enough breadth to satisfy most diners. The service was attentive but not invasive the server’s recommendations were spot-on. We had appetizers, salad, main course and desserts with coffee. All courses were very good.
The noise level was initially quiet enough to enjoy conversation. By the time we were finishing dessert, a large group settled in a couple tables over and changed the feel from quiet dining to loud, raucous mood. My dining companion was not bothered by the noise level but I found it difficult to enjoy.
Cannot recommend this place to anyone. The service was by far one of the worst I've experienced at a fine dining establishment. The waiter was pleasant, but the aides were absolutely horrendous. The service was slow. I mean sedates snail slow. They didn't know who was supposed to receive what dish. I think they may have hired people coming out of incarceration. At least that's what it felt like.
Stay away from the Mac and Cheese. It's like velveeta meets cracker barrel. And they used fusilli macaroni, not the traditional elbow marcaroni.
Steaks weren't seasoned well at all. They were edible but they were definitely lacking in the "wow" factor.
If you have HOURS to kill, go there but keep your standards low so you're not disappointed.
Service was sub par for the environment. Food was decent nothing special for the price. Dirty martini was so salty came with crappy olives and one looked like someone had taken a bite out of it. Not worth the money. Also no acknowledgement that it was our anniversary
This was my second time here at the steakhouse. First time the food service was great. This second visit the food was as good as ever. The service was quite poor. All the staff were polite the front desk especially and the guy checked out jackets and bags that was nice. The service was too slow though. After the Initial bread and water the wait was almost 1.5hrs before we received out steaks. Never an update from the waiter. In addition our steaks and crab were brought out and than a good time later our sides came out not at the same time. Furthermore they forgot to give us three sides and they never acknowledged it we had to point out to the waiter when our check was received that “hey we never got these 3 dishes” so food was good like last time but the service was quite poor. We had a 545reservation took us almost 3hrs to finish dinner we saw at least 2 other tables come in eat and leave. Kind of bummed out first visit was so good.
