Steak is magnificent!
This is my second time here -- but this time it wasn't at all like my pleasant visit the first time 4 years ago.
1) We got seated in tiny tables where the seats would hit the person behind us. In order to sit without bothering the patrons behind both chairs, my partner and my knees needed to touch! And I'm not that tall. We requested another table and it was given to us pretty quickly.
2)It took us 15 minutes after being seated before our server came to greet us.
3)After ordering, we waited 10 mins before bread and our soup were brought out. Then after that 35 MORE minutes before the main meal. We had empty wine glasses sitting on our table that didn't get taken, and the empty soup plate sat there for 15 mins. No acknowledgement from the team for 35 minutes - I had to flag someone down who was serving us water to ask about the food. I was starving!
4) Steak finally arrived. It was cooked nicely - but it was also a bit cold. Was it sitting there for a bit? Not sure
5) Most importantly -- I was here to celebrate a birthday with my significant other! He was patient, but this was the worst experience I've ever had at a steakhouse in the city!
Good food. Great booth in the back that had side enclosures to give a semi-private feel. Staff was very nice. I will definitely be back.
OMG!!! Some friends and I have been planning to visit Osso's ever since I saw them on Check Please and it was months ago. Well we finally made it 7 of us and it was so well worth the wait. We were prepared what to order because we had reviewed the menu prior. Our waiter Tom was the BOMB!! The steak was off the chain everyone got surf and turf with steak and crab. The appetizers wee great also. We had a excellent time and we are still talking about it. Great JOB!!! Bahb Hope can't wait to return
The space is very polished and the service is outstanding, but I can think of at three other steak houses in San Francisco that surpass Osso.
When we arrived our table wasn't ready. No problem, we went to the bar to have cocktail. We must have sat at the bar for a full ten minutes before the bartender took our order and finally delivered our drinks. He had to make mine over again because he dumped at least 5x the necessary amount of vermouth into my cocktail. it was all vermouth a hardly any rye. We later found out that he was a fill-in bartender who was required to service the bar, the cocktail lounge and the entire dining room. It got to a point where the wait staff were forced to go behind the bar and make their own cocktails. It was a mess.
Our waiter was excellent. Period.
The food, however was not. The Fried Calamari was overly breaded and the calamari got lost in the coating. I ate less than half of it. The Crab Cakes were very good. We ordered Hearts of Iceberg Lettuce with Blue Cheese Dressing to split. When it came to the table it was luke warm and the lettuce looked as if it had been left out on the kitchen counter for a few days. Instead of being cold and crisp it was wilted and warm. It also looked as if they trimmed the sides of a small head of lettuce instead of including the hearts. It was at least one third the size of the same salad you'd get at Bobo's, Ruth's Christ, or any other restaurant that paid attention to what it sent out of the kitchen. The Bone-in Filet was ok. But it was overly seasoned so the flavor of the meat was missing. Granted, it was a filet so we understood you sacrifice a bit of the meaty, savory taste for tenderness, but this was like getting a mouthful of some mixture of seasonings, mostly salt.
The roasted Mixed Vegetables were ok, but boring. We didn't bother with dessert.
We really wanted to like this place because friends of ours recommended it enthusiastically.
Food was so remarkably average. So not worth the $$
The cream spinach was fabulous as was the steak, cooked to perfection. The Caesar Salad was "okay" (missed the croutons, pesto was a bit "odd") the crab cakes were very good, but lacked any sort of "sauce" (though, not Tartar....) The BEST was the kettle bread.....very crispy crunchy.
It was my first experience dining at Osso Steakhouse. Although I picked Osso because of the ambiance and for the food, it was based on the yelp reviews and feedbacks. To begin with it was not bad, but being a steakhouse and situated in the higher class community area, I was expecting the restaurant in its whole self be more classy and much more impressionable. Following are my feedback:
Ambiance -- nice place with a posh entrance.
Free Valet -- super great, please keep this service.
Host/Hostess -- seem carefree, attentive but felt more like greeted at the regular café restaurant atmosphere.
Waitor -- very friendly but lack attention towards recommendations on food groups. Maybe a hit & miss attitude, I know he was busy serving a couple of big groups.
Appetizers -- maybe revisited on the portion served and the timing was speedy fast, therefore did not feel as if you are dining in this refine steakhouse. Me and my guests actually had a second to thinking the food was prepared way before they were ordered.
Sides -- Asparagus was served pathetically less for the price and the plating. Osso should think about whether to offer it in the current plating or switch to another recipe.
Entrees -- Meat quality was good but can't say it was superb.
Overall, I am not saying it is poor and yes, I will come back except giving it another try just so to find out if a 'steakhouse' atmosphere is experienced, and be able to provide a better and improve review.
I will rate Osso in the top 5 Steak Houses in the country!
They have a well oiled service machine delivering gourmet food at a fair price.
The facility itself is inviting and has great booths for 2 to 4 people as well as accommodations for large parties.
If you want to treat someone to a special evening this is the place.
Cheers, Barry Cioffi
Seriously worst service ever. We were celebrating our one year wedding anniversary and this place a recommended as an upscale steakhouse. The only thing upscale was the prices. Our waiter came to our table 3 times. Once to get our drinks, take our order and give us the check. My husband and I went my whole meal without a drink except for water. The waiter passed our table at multiple times didnt even stop to ask if we needed anything. We saw him look at our table and before we could make eye contact to get his attention he scurried away. By far the worst service I have ever received just terrible. The food was not anything to rave about either. Steak was not flavorful at all and it was very chewy.
The food was only lukewarm
Steaks were awesome.
Both our Salads were wilted and could be a lot more "fresh," especially for an epic steakhouse like Osso. It was very disappointing.
Service could've been better as well. The main server didn't check on us, and we had to flag down busboys for our requests.
Pre concert dinner with old friends
Our server Ron was awesome. Super friendly and knowledgeable. THE CHEESE BREAD is insane and the steaks were cooked PERFECTLY, which I know steakhouses should know how to do, but it is incredible how many over cook mine or undercook his.
So very happy we came here. He had a perfect birthday dinner!
I like Osso and have been several times. The food is solid and everything else as well. I would offer the following feedback. First- the air conditioning was non-existent- I know it's San Francisco and usually don't need it but when you have a three hour dinner with lots of food and drink it makes it better.
The food was good. Although the server suggested that all steaks come medium rare and all the steaks were rare. The macaroni and cheese with calabrian chili was like a cup- totally underwhelming.
The web site says $10 corkage and we were charged $25.
On the good side. The potato an vegetables and the brussel sprouts were excellent. As were the oysters and the whole crab. The bread is awesome.
Tavilo per quattro persone molto piccolo e sedute molto scomode
Great food great service. Had a party of 8 and had no issues with anything we ordered
Osso is our go to spot for special occasions and for delicious steak. The bone in filet mignon is priceless, its a hard cut to find and amazing in taste. The drinks were made well I would recommend the side car. The waiter was attentive and we even met the new manager Bob.
I took my boyfriend for his birthday and he loved it! You couldn’t have asked for a better meal and service and they surprised us with a free vanilla panna cotta dessert with a candle for his birthday. We’ll definitely be coming back again!!
Excellent steak, paired wine and sides without flourishes; attentive yet low profile service in a classic 1950s atmosphere. I half expected Bogart and Bacall to wander in.
Love this place best steak ever and great service
Service was amazing! Would have liked a few more steak choices without bones.
Jake was outstanding! Food was awesome.
I am picky on my steaks and can cook them really well however this might be the best ever steak I have ever tasted.
Despite all the negative reviews about the steaks, me and my boyfriend decided to give it a try. First off, the filet mignons(done medium well) were very tasteful, juicey and very well seasoned. We also ordered the Italian potstickers, Mac n cheese, and crispy potatoes & veggies(for table). My ratings for each below:
Mac n cheese: 5/5
A must!!! The chili added gives it a very flavor taste, not just an average Mac n cheese. BUT it is very tiny. So for a party bigger than 2, either pass or order 2 orders. Lol
Crispy veggies: 4/5
Very flavorful and the perfect crisp but they are just veggies nothing too extravagant. Portion is average but slightly on the smaller side.
Italian potstickers: 4/5
These were an interesting try. A slightly different take on potstickers. Filet mignon pieces are in the potstickers which was very good and the sauce they put on top was just the right amount.
Love the atmosphere and the service. The food was very good, but a couple dishes were disappointing. The. Fried calamari appetizer was thickly coated and very heavy. The salad I had I think it was the house, had a very bland dressing. The cheese bread appetizer and the Limoncello cake were both wonderful as was the quality of the steaks.
My only complaint was the steak. We ordered petite filet mignon, medium rare. My husband's steak was closer to rare. Mine was closer to medium. Would have been nice if both steaks were medium rare. Otherwise, food was really good. The steak and mushroom potsickers were fabulous.
Birthday for four. General manager awesome. Host and waiter needs help with friendliness
Great food and excellent service. Highly recommend this place.
This is the place for great steak
Unfortunately the service has suffered quite a bit
Dining was rushed and hurried
If you can deal with “ food logistics “ you can find a great steak 🥩
Managment made every effort to rectify the issue
Maybe it was just a bad night !
Osso has an old school feel to it! They deliver consistent service, great ambiance and food always...
We came for my sister’s birthday while we were visiting SF. Our server was very weird - old school but not in a good way. The restaurant looks like an upscale diner - it definitely has character. Our server said the kitchen would not chop our wedge salad and did not do anything for the birthday girl. Our main courses came out without silverware on the table and the sides were very very small. We would not return with all the steakhouse options in the city.
Absolute Empfehlung. Die Location ist einmalig. Der Service sehr aufmerksam und zuvorkommend. Das Fleisch ist ein Traum.
It was very nice n chill
Osso is my husband’s favorite steakhouse in SF. He wanted to have his birthday celebration there, without our kid, definitely not a family style restaurant.
Definitely an old establishment and known for high quality steaks. Overall the food we ordered was delicious. Our bone-in rib eye was tasty but 1/3 of it was fat. While I expect that there should be fat in the rib eye, I think 1/3 fat is excessive. The unfortunate thing about is that you really don’t know how much fat there is until you get onto it. You can’t really send it back once you’ve cut it up into pieces. I’ve been to many high end steakhouses around the country that lets you look at your steak before cooking. I wish that was possible so maybe we would’ve opted for a less fatty one.
Since this is a very high end steakhouse, I’d expect the restrooms to be more posh and have the nice towels. The restrooms remind me of high school.
I’d have to say that I was really excited about coming to this steakhouse. After this expect, I’m not sure I’d come back.
Great steaks!!! Great service
Absolutely terrible from start to finish, I wrote a very lengthy review , have no idea why it is not appearing
Our experience was beyond what was expected.
Our server Shannon was very attentive to what we needed and always checked back with us.
It was a stellar beginning to the evening before the concert next door at the Masonic Auditorium.
