I am so sorry to see this restaurant closed... before we could dine there one last time.
No one told us this restaurant closed down on 1/31/19. I guess Osmanthus failed to inform OpenTable about it, even though we had reservations in advance for February 7th.
They were closed!!!! Possibly out of business?? Annoying to have a reservation for a closed restaurant.
Actually the restaurant was closed when we got there with no explanation. However, there was some sort of health inspection notice, suggesting that the restaurant had been closed by the Health Department. According to a comment on Yelp, someone thought it had been closed the day before we went there. What was particularly irritating is that Open Table failed to notify us that the restaurant was closed, although it sent of lots of reminders that we had a reservation, and lots of follow ups asking for our opinion of the restaurant. OPEN TABLE NEEDS TO BE MORE CAREFUL ABOUT INFORMING THEIR CLIENTS WHEN RESTAURANTS CLOSE AND NOT SENDING ANNOYING REQUESTS FOR OPINIONS ABOUT RESTAURANTS THAT HAVE CLOSED.
Made a reservation on open table and when we showed up for dinner the place was CLOSED! Had to walk around in the rain on a Friday with some business associates and find a place to eat and talk. Business phone number listed is disconnected and no signs on door indicate why they were closed. Is it just for one night, forever, only Friday’s? I DONT KNOW!!!!
It's closed down now
I was told that they are closing this Thursday as the owner has sold the business and it will be opening as a Thai restaurant. They literally ran out of basic food items and were trying to use up the items they had. The food was not good at all probably because no one cares anymore and they were substituting or leaving out ingredients in dishes. They should have just closed instead of staying open just to sell the remaining food they have in their stock
Great environment with excellent food & service! Kinda sad that the establishment is closing due to the owners retirement, but amazing experience!!
Delicious but it is closing this week!!! The owner sold the building and is retiring.
Reserved a table for a party of four. One of our friends was late, but we were seated anyway. There were actually plenty of tables on a weekday (Th.) evening around 7:30. The service was really good. The waitress was really attentive and described the dishes really well. She gave us really interesting information about the cultural backgrounds of the food, while mixing the fresh, delicious ingredients at our table before we ate. The price was really doable considering the amount of food for four people. The dishes were brought out staggered so we could enjoy each one. The cocktails looked really good, but I wasn't drinking that night so I didn't have one unfortunately. Overall, really great birthday dinner experience for my friend.
Always a great meal
Restaurant could use some heat, it was very chilly
The food (beef with Peppercorn and Salt/Pepper Lobster) and drinks (Shanghi’ed - mezcal, Tequila, Thai chili peppers) was outstanding as usual. We love to introduce Osmanthus to Friends. Always boasts a Family atmosphere and the Owners are great hosts.
Food is delicious and servers always kind and informative.
Pros: Delicious food, good service.
Unfortunately, an ownership and menu change is coming, so only one more month of the delicious food served at Osmanthus. Go now!
As an upscale mixed-Asian place, the food was a bit pricier than most places. While the food was tasty, we did not find it to be anything out of the ordinary. You can get same quality of food at other Asian restaurants in Oakland for much less of the price.
This has been a favorite for the last 5 years. But,they’ve recently had an ownership change and something was off this time. Dan Dan noodles were bland, ambiance was gone and the bathroom was filthy. I hope it was just an off night.
Absolutely fabulous. Great service.Joel, our server was great. Food was great too. I will be there again very soon.
Have eaten here a number of times and have always found the food excellently prepared with fresh top quality ingredients. Service is first rate. portion size is good. Highly recommended.
The tea leaf salad, and mango salad were amazing as were the short ribs. The only dish we didn’t love was chicken because it was a little chewy, but still delicious. Would come back!
I've been a great fan of Osmanthus since it opened. I was recently there for dinner with a friend who has hearing issues. Even with normal hearing, the noise level was oppressive. The general noise was bad, and the music excessively loud. Unfortunately we were seated next to a table of people who were drinking heavily and literally screaming. We asked them several times to tone it down, alas, that never happened. And for reasons that weren't clear, the restaurant increased the volume of the music they were playing.
We left with our ears ringing, happy with the food but very frustrated by the atmosphere. Sadly I feel hesitant to return.
Some of the freshest, most flavorful Asian food I've had in a long time. Favorite dishes included dried fried chicken wings, fiery tofu and pork belly leeks sichuan pepper. Relaxed but trendy atmosphere... we loved out little wooden booth for two!
First visit to this restaurant. Salad with fermented tea was excellent. Spare ribs very tasty. Mint chicken also good. Attentive waiter, relatively quiet place.
Great platha, out of the osmanthus tea which seems odd
Quality has gone down, unfortunately, as the menu expanded.
A colleague recommended it for a team dinner. It was absolutely delicious and the value was very fair. The Brussels sprouts are a must, but I liked everything we ordered: hamachi and one other appetizer, Chicken and Pumpkin, Dan Dan noodles, prawns chili lime. I will go back.
The last two times we've been to what had been our favorite restaurant we were disappointed. This time the usually tender ribs were tough and stringy, the eggplant bitter. Far from cheap, too. Moderate to expensive.
Our dinner at Osmanthus was very good and I would recommend it. The menu was interesting and varied.
All our dishes were good but we especially enjoyed the tea leaf salad and ahi appetizer. We left satisfied but not overly stuffed. We will return and look forward to trying some new dishes.
The restaurant's toilet leaked so you are stepping into sewer water when you flush. The smell wafted into the dining room. The table was sticky. I am concerned about the overall cleanliness. The food was good,as was the service.
They add MSG to their food. We ran out of water a lot and they forgot part of our order. Understaffed for the size of crowd.
I had the chili wings and a couple drinks. This would be a good place to bring a date. It was a little loud, but we were at the bar, so kind of expected.
Food is consistently good and the service outstanding.
A group of us have been regularly coming to Osmanthus for get-together dinners. However, our latest visit was a disappointment, mostly thanks to erratic and fitful service. We've always appreciated the service before -- thoughtful, punctual and efficient. Instead of having one waitperson, however, this time we seemed to have several, not well-coordinated. The entrees were brought out separately; it took a bit of effort to track down our last entree, and communication was somewhat challenging. The other wrinkle on the evening was a large party that caused the noise level to soar. Fortunately, the food and cocktails were as good as ever.
This is our new favorite place. Great flavors, great food and the staff could not be any nicer.
Portions were on the small side
Food was tasty. Eggplant and garlic noodles were very good
We got the check and wasn’t asked if we wanted dessert
Some food excellent- including dry fried green beans entree and a brussel sprouts appetizer. A chicken with vegetable dish less stellar. Quite loud so try to sit outside if you have quiet people!
I have to agree with the other reviews - service was so-so and some of the menu items were better than others.
Our waitress was super-nice and explained a few of the dishes to our group (7 people) but she also seemed rushed and ran off a few times. Later when food came out they missed one of the items despite her having repeated back to us everything she wrote down.
Some menu items were outstanding - eggplant shrimp, fermented tea leave salad. The chicken curry was really bland and had huge filler potatoes in it + it was a very small portion that came in tiny bowl.
The tables are very small as well, making it a bit difficult to feel comfortable.
Great service. Food was just ok. Good if you like Burmese food aka high calorie food! :)
I thought the food was average. Not a lot of imagination but tasty just the same. The service was very attentive and well done.
