A bit disappointing to say the least. Only one server was working and when he came over to finally take our order food came up in the middle of it so he walked away to take care of that before finishing taking our order. Menu has changed and is quite limited now and they removed the one item I was really looking forward to. Food was a bit on the bland side without a lot of flavor. Also we were celebrating a birthday and there was no offer of dessert or after meal coffee. We had not been there for a while and sadly don't think we will go back
We had eaten at Orupa in the past, and the meal was quite good. This time however, it was a service disaster. The food was fine, but not exceptional. The biggest issue of our night out was the service. Having spent many years working in restaurants, I feel like I am very patient and willing to forgive a lot of things. It was difficult to write this review, but I think the owner needs to seriously change how they work, by rethinking their role in the restaurant and spend considerable time training staff.
To be fair, it was Valentine's Day. When we arrived, the restaurant was not busy, but it did fill up during our visit. We were seated quickly and then sat unattended for 20 straight minutes. I watched multiple busboys, waiters and the owner pass by us. Not a single one offered to bring us water or menus. Finally, our waitress arrived, quite frazzled. I thought things were going to get better, but it took an additional 20 minutes before we ever ordered and received drinks.
I do not blame the waitress. I firmly believe the owner is at fault. I watched the owner walk around the restaurant the entire night, not saying a word to anyone. Just weird eye contact. We were not alone in this experience. I watched another couples frustration for the same lack of service during the evening.
The final straw was at the end. We received our check, and I was ready to leave. I immediately put out my credit card, and then waited an additional 10 minutes for our waitress to pick it up. She only picked it up, because the owner planted herself in her walking path and wouldn't let her pass. She nodded towards our table, and the waitress turned around and picked up the check.
Here in lies the problem. The owner saw me put the card down and walked past no less than 5 times. She never lifted a finger to help her wait staff. Just scowling looks. Lack of participation on her part, is while I will never go back. She simply couldn't be bothered to help her own employees on a busy evening.
We won’t be going back. The food was hit and miss. Mine was all great but my spouse thought everything was below average. The scallops were like mush and the duck seemed like it was boiled. We had one round of drinks but they ran out of clean glasses so we weren’t able to have a second. We waited a REALLY long time for anyone to take our dessert order. We were expecting to spend §$$ because it was Valentines Day, but our experience wasn’t worth what we paid.
I was excited to try Orupa for the first time so decided to take my girlfriend there for Valentines Day. We were seated promptly but sat our table for some time before even getting water. We are not impatient people but reached the point where we had to convince ourself that clearly they can see us since we were in the middle of the room.
Finally got some attention and we were treated with some burnt rolls. At least the bottoms were edible.
Dinner came and there was some redemption. The filet was perfectly cooked and my girl friends pasta dish was enjoyable.
I will probably give you guys another chance. Maybe you were short handed? At least the food was good
First they gave away our reservation, lost our undercooked appetizer, then tried to serve us a raw Fillet Mignon that was pink throughout and room temperature. When we brought it to the attention of the waiter, he offered to take the meat back to have it cooked longer. Bringing food back to a kitchen from the table is against food safety standards and unacceptable for proper preparation of a $40 steak. Though the waiter was nice and did his best to provide us service, he lacked knowledge of what was on the menu and could not answer simple questions about our potential selections.
The salmon was great. Light and flaky with great flavor.
Great location, great building, great menu, poor delivery.
Valentine's Day. Appetizer was good. Main course was luke warm and scallops were gritty. Service was lacking but I due to the day, not surprising.
I liked our service, it was quick and friendly but the food was very over priced for what it was.
We had an anniversary dinner on January 25, 2018. Not only did the dinner exceed our expectations but the service did as well. We went later on a slow night but did not feel rushed to end a very delightful dining experience.
My very most favorite place. Love the food and ambiance. However it was evident that we had a new server. But was pleased overall.
We had our usual great dinner evening at Orupa. It was New Years' Eve so the place was full but service was fine and food outstanding. Bartender Cory was very busy but took care of us all.
When arrived at our reservation time they we're not ready for us. Then we waited almost an hour for a waiter. They had forgotten us. They were very apologetic once we brought it their attention. Also they had a New Years Eve Menu that was too expensive for what you got. We had to ask them to turn up the heat it was freezing. And they did. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere comfortable.
The food was okay. We were disappointed about several things: the Ahi was overcooked, the paella didn't seem to have any saffron, and the Jaegershcnitzel sauce was not what we were expecting either (after having lived in Germany). The tiramisu was a blob of cream with a nice presentation. Everything looked gorgeous and the French Onion soup was the best we have ever had. We have had other items at Orupa in the past and enjoyed them a lot more. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere was great. All in all, we left thinking we probably won't go back for quite a while.
Way overpriced for the quality of food
The service was great. But at $30 a plate I should get more that mediocre fair
The Christmas Eve menu was delicious. We were all very happy with our soups/salads and entrees. I particularly enjoyed the sturgeon and crab ravioli.
It is our Christmas Eve tradition to have dinner at Orupa. Hans never disappoints!
One of our favorite “special” places to eat. Always excellent!
Food was pretty good -- selection broader than anticipated, but service was slow. The waiter knew this and apologized profusely. With a better service, I would rate higher.
Food was under cooked and potatoes were cold.
Service was exceptional, entrees were delicious but dessert was undercooked and sought Apple strudel.
Perfect service! Great drinks; fancy, delicious food where I know there won't be any screaming from the next table over! Great location and easy to get to and park. Always something different to choose from and portions are perfect. I love coming here!
The food was cold and bland. The service was good.
My wife and I have been there about 20 times... each time getting something different. Only restaurant in my 53 years that I've experimented so much with the menu. Neither one of us have ever been disappointed. Highly recommended.
Another great overall dining experience! Only mark against is the first table we sat down to was wobbly. We moved to a booth and that was very comfortable. It was a little cold in the restaurant. The wine and entrée were phenominal. Service was great as well. Thank you so much for a great anniversary celebration!
Meh. So overly filled with salt and pepper.
Met a local friend here for dinner. Great fresh fish dishes prepared with local ingredients and creatively plated. Good friendly service and a nice wine list. We enjoyed our evening.
The dinner salads are getting smaller, the dish I have ordered in the past, that I enjoyed very much was changed enough that I would not order again.
Food was ok. Ordered the steak special, which was over priced and very grisly. Half of it was left as not edible and a waste at $32. It had been awhile since I dined there and won't be rushing back. The whole meal felt rushed as clearing dishes was a constant. There was no reason to rush as the place was half empty and with good reason.
Three good meals, but missing some items from the old menu.
This place regularly cleans up on the Best of the Valley polls hosted by the Statesman-Journal newspaper. It is a bit spendy, but several entrees are between $15-$20, and the ones we had were quite filling. The appetizers (aka "shared plates") are also unique and I recommend the parmesan wrapped crab - essentially a crab cake on a big parmesan tuile with a brie sauce. If the weather is good, try the rooftop garden.
I went on a Friday for happy hour in a group of three and had a great time. Food was so good. We stuck with just the small/shared plates menu because it was 1/2 off for happy hour. Everything was great! Service was wonderful--they were very attentive. Only negative was that it was too quiet for my taste at 6:30pm on a Friday evening. I like I nice energetic vibe, but if you prefer quiet, I recommend happy hour here!
Made reservations for Mothers Day. Failed to read reviews. Waited too long for meal. Salads came out before appetizers. We were told daily Kids meals (fried chicken) were not available as we were being served main course. We ordered at 5:30 pm. We had asked for the kids meals to come with appetizers. Told kids meals (12 noodles with red sauce) would be taken off bill. Bill came still on there. Asked waitress and told us she couldn't take them off. Food was okay but seemed every plate was missing something from the description. Peas and mini carrots in pasta C'mon. Scallops on mashed potatoes? I don't get it. Paid way too much for bad service and *meh* food. Not worth it.
We invited friends and family for a pre-graduation dinner! We couldn't have been happier with the food, the ambience and service!!
Orupa always delivers an excellent meal with outstanding service.
The food wasn't that great and it was WAY overpriced for the portion sizes. The cheese plate appetizer had one piece of cheese, a few olives & grapes. One slice of tomato cut in half, thinly sliced 1/4 of an apple and two pieces of toast baguettes. The steak in the Tex Mex was tough. The salmon fettuccini looked like the salmon was dumped out of a can. The price you pay isn't worth the value of the food. Very disappointed. :(
Hans does it right every time. He is the best cook in all of Oregon.
His restaurant is made to accommodate all. You feel welcome the minute you walk in the door.
Great staff, very friendly and professional. Food was equally great and tasted wonderful.
Orupa always does such a nice job. Preparation and presentation are first class, the staff is relaxed yet attentive, and the noise level is pleasant. We often go there as a family for special occasions and we always enjoy ourselves. The menu is wide-ranging yet not overwhelming. Highly recommend.
Good took a long time but was ok. Drink was not worth the $. Service was fine.
Hans, Bruce and the rest of the staff do a great job making you feel welcome and important to their business.
Nice ambiance but poor service and sub standard food. Very expensive for what it is, who covers a prime ribeye in gravy??
