Very disappointed. I have not been to the restaurant in a few years. Tuna tartare was well presented and fine. My Cornish Hen was over cooked and tasteless. The drinks were generous! That helped My companions had no comment. Bad night?
A newly discovered gem and we loved it! We booked for 5 and at the last minute two more joined our group. The receptionist didn't blink an eye before happily agreeing to make up a larger table for us.
Excellently prepared fish, paired with a lovely chardonnay made our evening perfect in the lively, vibrant atmosphere. Our server was great and all the wait staff did an excellent job of removing dishes, cutlery, etc.
Good food and ambiance. Very nice
I had not been to this restaurant in several years and I was happy to be back. The decor, the ambience, and the food were excellent. I was not happy with the service because we had three different servers come to our table. At the end of the meal we had to flag down a fourth server to get our bill and they took quite a long time to bring it back. I was also very disappointed with the quality of one of the servers. She stacked the plates at our table One by one which is not something you do at a restaurant of this caliber. And it wasn’t that she was stacking them on her arm, she was doing it at the table which was in very poor taste.
Amazing... Great food and the service is superb.
Everything was great except for lackadaisical and slow service!
The A/C wasn’t working properly so we were hot and uncomfortable and I’m through hot flashes due to breast cancer so it wasn’t the best feeling but the food and service was great!
After going to Zest, I had been wanting to try this restaurant for quite some time. I decided to take my mom for Miami Spice. The server started off great and was very sweet. However, we received our entree pretty late and she seemed to have disappeared. We kept asking for her but she never came to check on us or ask how our food was. One dish had duck and it arrived cold in comparison to the vegetables on the side. The same thing went for the salmon dish I had ordered. The salmon was colder than the veggies. We also ordered a 2nd round of drinks to arrive with the entree, but they came after. Thankfully, the manager took those two drinks off the bill for us. But we still never knew why we received our food so late or why the server disappeared and took so long to get back to us. IT could have been busy, but communication is essential.
Loves the food and the ambience. Was a bit over priced for portions. Staff service gave a feel for rushing gather experience
The service was great and it was nice to meet Chef Cindy Hutson. Not often you see the chef as involved.
Unique menu. Food was a bit salty...I like salt but both a bisque and fritters were very salty. Main courses were excellent, fresh, well prepared and presented, very good flavors. Service wasn't quite "on." A bit slow and inattentive and had to be reminded to bring the Sangria. All in all, a nice experience which was "made" by the uniqueness of the cuisine.
Great food. Love the monthly wine promotions. This time we got a fantastic wine at a great price
Food was excellent as always. The favor are exquisite, the attention to detail impecable. This restaurant is truly a gem, we visited for Miami Spice during lunch and the overall experience was outstanding.
Wrong food delivered to our table and service was non existent. I was very surprised
We enjoyed a very relaxing and yummy Miami Spice lunch. The appetizer of Shishito peppers was very delicious and the mahi mahi (wonderful, fresh piece of fish) with boniato mash was excellent. The pork loin was also very good. Service was super with Jojo being extremely attentive and accommodating without being intrusive. Desserts were only OK; had they been as interesting and divine as other years, it would merit 5 stars. Vanilla ice cream with pieces of a mediocre brownie does not a fabulous dessert make. However, this was the only flaw.
Everyone was very nice and attentive! Gigi was very helpful with getting us a perfect table to out of the way with our stroller and our waiter Luis was very attentive with our whole night. Definitely recommend!
Good food and better ambiance. Luis did great working on meeting expectations
We waited over 30 minutes for a table even though we had a reservation. They also ran out of one of the Miami spice entrees.
Awesome Staff, Food, Service and Time. I will always frequent.
One of my favorite restaurants in Coral Gables. Octanique has not only the best Caribbean kitchen in Miami, but also one the best seafood. This restaurant is definitely a gem and I always like to go for especial ocassions.
A food blogger friend recommended this excellent restaurant when I told him I was going to be in Coral Gables to see a play at Actors Playhouse with a dear friend. This restaurant was immediately next door to the theater, and the entire experience of the meal was fantastic. We both enjoyed our meals so very much. Thanks to Ortanique for a lovely meal and evening in The Gables.
Went for lunch using the Miami Spice menu. We had two fish entrees that were outstanding. Salad and dessert were also excellent.
Great food and service. Will definitely be back! Thank you
The wait here is ridiculous. We waiting 40 minutes for a table with a reservation. We were sent to the bar to wait until a table opened. We spoke to several other guests who were also waiting a long time for a table. There were 3 tables open while I waited and did not understand why we were no seated. After waiting 40 minutes I finally went to the hostess to complain. I asked why those tables were remaining unused she responded that “she could not answer that question” and that I could sit at anyone of those tables. The hostess went to each table to ask the name under reservation to mark those guests as seated. The operational flow of this place is HORRIBLE.
After the long wait I hoped that the food was worth the wait. Turns out the food is just Okay. Nothing impressive. More inspired by Caribbean cuisine. Next part of the food experience was the bread as the starter and the bread pudding dessert.
This restaurant is definitely overrated.
Its has been in CG for over 20 years and is still going strong, great food at a reasonable price. With a friendly atmosphere. Great for a gathering with friends
Wanted to a long time to go to this restaurant for a long time ..... we were rewarded with excellent food and outstanding service. Everyone is committed to making your visit a memorable one. Anxious to return to try the different foods on the menu.
Two couples were expecting a great dinner but were sorely disappointed. Appetizers and desserts were fine but not the main courses. Service was quite sub-standard. For instance, tap water was poured into the glass filled with sparkling water and we had to complain to the wait staff to make it right since they weren't owning up to their error, lemon was requested 4 times, each of the courses went to the wrong diner, etc.
We had heard great things about this landmark restaurant and its celebrity chef. It did not live up to the hype. We will not be returning.
We had seen this place a hundred times and the menu never seemed authentic or interesting. We went for Miami Spice to give it a try. Was pleasantly surprised. The food was wonderful ( a little salty), the waitstaff was nice but couldn't answer very many questions but he did always return quickly. The dining room is a was inviting and we will be returning.
An institution like Ortanique has no room for service failure
When I used to work in Coral Gables, Ortanique was a familiar “go to” place for me to invite some of my select visitors in the Oil & Gas business. Recently, one of my former colleagues called me to let me know that he was overnighting in Coral Gables from Venezuela on his way to Houston. He asked me and my wife if we were available for dinner. Without hesitation we unanimously agreed to go to Ortanique which was walking distance from his hotel. We got in on time and our table was just waiting for us. As usual, from the Crab cake to the Bouillabaisse, the food was outstanding. I always love the ambience and the conviviality of that restaurant.
We started with a bottle of white wine for 3 people, which was all gone by the time we finished with the appetizers. Before the main courses arrive, the young waitress just removed the wine cooler with the empty bottle from our table without even asking us if we cared for more wine or not. This was a terribly poor judgment call. I don’t want to blame it on “stereotypes” (3 black people) but on pure lack of experience or because she was very busy. I kindly called her back to tell her that it was a “faux pas” and, in fact, we asked her to bring a 2nd bottle of white wine to drink with our main course. I really don’t want the waitress to be penalized but I would urge the Management of Ortanique to learn from this incident hoping that it doesn’t happen again. Regardless how wealthy we were, business decisions should not be made on negative stereotypes and, I dearly hope it was not the case although I was not happy with what happened. Regardless, Ortanique will remain on my list for a long time.
After having a recommendation from a co-worker, decided to reserve at this place. Unfortunately we were given the worst table, even though the restaurant was half empty. After asking for a different table, the hostess said no and we had to leave.
Excellent Restaurant! Cindy is a great chef! The Best Mojitos!
Miami spice menu was great. Still have the best mojitos in town. Love it here every time we come.
We used to be regulars and decided to try Ortanique on the Mile again. Joel the bartender is awesome and a drinks wizard. Food and service were very good, but not what we signed up for. The Miami Spice was COMPLETELY different, so it felt like a bait and switch. One of our guests is particular about her food and had been looking forward to try the Miami Spice menu. The other down side was the almost 1 hour wait for our table, which was open when we checked in. Still had an enjoyable time, but didn't get to eat what we were expecting to.
The restaurant has been consistently good for two decades. They have an amazing jerk pork chop, perhaps the best pork dish in the Southeast. Took a vantage of the Miami spice menu tried the curry buttered chicken for the first time. It was very tender and amazingly flavorful. Can’t say enough good things about the chef, management, bartenders and servers!
I dine there often, including lunch. The menu is always new and seasonal in nature. You feel welcome immediately and the wait staff is very helpful with any questions. We both had the N Carolina Trout and it was excellent. I rarely have dessert out but can not resist Ortanique's Bread Pudding. It's always Obscene!!
Can't wait to go again. We are there a few times every month.
parking was easy waiter was excellent food very good
downside - wine was overpriced the miami spice menu was changed from the website
we checked it that afternoon bait and switch
Vacationing in south FL and or son picked Ortanique for dinner. Everything was fantastic from drinks at the bar through dinner. Excellent service and recommendations from staff.
It was packed and very loud. They were busy on a Wednesday, but unable to handle the crowd. It took a long time to even get our order taken and they didn't even bring any bread until we were nearly finished with our apps. It was a measly 2 pieces of garlic bread! There were long waits between courses and they never brought the 2nd bread they promised. We had Miami Spice, white bean soup and roasted peppers for our apps. Sirloin tips and roast mahi on polenta for entrees with mango tres leches for dessert. It was my wife's birthday, which I noted on our online reservation, but they said or did nothing. Sometimes a good restaurant can get too good for it's own sake and they take their clients for granted. Ortanique has a capacity problem where the kitchen isn't anywhere near able to keep up with the orders and it doesn't look like the manager is too concerned about a solution- not as long as the sheeple keep coming in droves. We're not sheeple, so it's highly unlikely they'll see us there again. Too bad a talented chef can't round out the deal.
We dined off the pre-fixe Miami Spice Lunch menu and everything was amazing! The service was also wonderful!
We enjoyed ourselves.
