I ordered the hamachi crudo and cod (entree). Although the portion sizes were on the smaller side, I really enjoyed the use of seasonal ingredients including green zucchini and zucchini flowers.
My husband ordered the trout dip, chilled zucchini soup, and chicken roulade which we enjoyed as well.
Amazing food and service. Cool ambiance, wait staff was awesome and went out of the way to make sure the food could be prepared with our food allergies in mind
We really loved the two bite-sized snacks we ordered - the chopped liver and cod ones. The gem salad was just okay. The swordfish and chicken entrees as well as the popcorn ice cream dessert were all very good. Overall the food is extremely creative.

With roughly 8 months behind it, Oro is still trying to get its footing. A recent change is to deemphasize large shared plates and focus on individual sized mains. That’s a good direction but they still have to work out portion sizes. I started out with a very nice smoked trout dip snack but the sesame crackers were a bit too fragile. The chilled asparagus soup was disappointing. It lacked asparagus flavor and bordered on bitter. The little gem lettuce salad was brutish but in a curiously good way. The portion was humongous but the ever so crisp leaves punctuated with kumquat slices made it interesting to the end. The smoked pork leg was the most unusual finale and very good. It’s sort of a take-off on French pork aiguillette. When you add the spätzle, artichokes, yogurt, and greens it’s a rather hefty portion. Food prices are remarkably low; especially considering that most dishes can be satisfyingly shared. Wines are hit or miss. There is a selection of inexpensive but mundane wines on tap as well as better bottle pours (see the full wine list). Service is generally good and aspires to be exceptional. The kitchen can throw things off with long waits between courses. The quietest area is the room with banquet seating. The soaring ceilings there also make for a delightful experience. While not as surefooted as Jason Fox’s original Commonwealth, this is a restaurant that is bound to only get better.
We went on a date night around 6pm stopping in early for happy hour. So incredible! We got some happy hour beer and wine. We then ordered the $60 tasting menu. 4 courses was so much food. Starting off with small bites including an awesome beef tar tar. Salads were a ton of fun. Squid ink and charred octopus. Every bite was a flavor bomb in your mouth. Entrees were chicken and lamb. The lamb was served over eucalyptus yogurt and raisin paste. Yum! Dessert was really the icing on the cake for a great feast. Ricotta cheesecake and homemade yogurt and rhubarb. If you stop here, you must order the family tasting menu. It's worth every penny.
Oro totally exceeded our expectations. The service was outstanding and the food very, very good. We had the pig's ear starter which was excellent. Other starters were the little gem lettuce salad with kumquat, and the simple green salad. Nice portion sizes. I suggest you share.
All the mains we tried were very good and very well priced. We had the swordfish, clams, etc which was very delicate but good. The potato gnocchi were excellent - soft small pillows in a nice sauce. The smoked pork leg was a very generous portion. Sparkling and still water from the tap.
Will definitely add this restaurant into the rotation.
The menu offers a refreshing experience of high quality Californian delicacies and unusual food combinations that will feed your senses and your bellies!! (Not a symbolic drop on the plate, but perfectly sized meals). It's all about sharing and the tasting menu is the way to go!
One of their dishes brought me back to my childhood! I almost cried when I recognized the flavor of the green young almonds that the chef shaved over a salad and that I used to eat from the trees of my grandparents farmhouse!!!

Oro has mastered maximizing revenue from simple foods. Granted, the presentation was immaculate and the service satisfactory, I left feeling that I had a ok experience but at a very premium price.
The menu is all over the place. It seems like the restaurant is trying to hard to be edgy with interesting ingredients, but taste and value suffer. Nice champagne, though! Will not visit again.

Went to Oro for a pre-theater dinner. Great cocktails, fun, friendly staff. Food is for sharing and very good. Kind of a funny location in Mint Plaza, but worth the search.
Our lunch was delicious, service awesome and our waiter made greatrecomendations from the menus. Great new place. Highly recommend it!!!
Great service through out. From the hostess to the rest of the service crew at Oro, they make you feel welcomed. Wonderful experience all around.
My husband and I enjoyed this spot before going to the theater. The courses were inventive and designed to share. Be forwarded that the overall bill adds up quickly.
Very usual and inventive menu, I guess, but not great for a business traveler dining alone. Most of the dishes were for sharing. The small plates were REALLY small. The fluke crudo was enjoyable, but hardly the size of a tiny appetizer. They brought everything out one by one. The salad was this enormous bowl of greens - not much else - with ok dressing on it. Enough to serve 5 people. Then the broccoli was really broccolini, and tasted burnt, although it didn't look burnt. Just really strange.
Excellent, attentive staff. Share everything! Double up on the gnocchi!
Oro prepared a four course prix-fixe menu for Valentine's Day, which was delightful. We arrived a few minutes early and enjoyed a Manhattan and a Scotch ale before dinner. I have a dairy allergy, and the staff was very attentive to ensure each course worked, and was still exceptional. My two favorite dishes were the smoked potatoes infused with bacon and the entree of lamb two ways, We'll be returning soon.
The food was very creative and the staff were excellent at explaining the details of how they made the food amazing. It was truly a culinary and dining experience.
It was my first time to dine here, so we've chosen "Blind Tasting Menu" $75, along with wine pairing $50. Every dishes (family style) brought delightful flavors and seasonality. I enjoyed all of them very much. I have kept saying this for many other restaurants, but I wish wines are poured from the bottle at the table.
We came to Oro Monday evening which was very quiet. It was basically our table and another table in this huge restaurant...
The food is literally strange- If you like Pig Ears, this is your place...
The Nioki pasta was very good but frankly- this was the only thing we liked...
portions are very small and pretty expensive.
Service was very good...
In summary- The restaurant is beautiful, great ambiance but quiet. Service is great, food- not so much and overpriced.

We had dinner here with a friend visiting from NYC. The service was fantastic from the moment we walked in the door throughout the entire meal from all staff we interacted with. The food was interesting, unusual, and scrumptious!
Had dinner at Oro recently. The service was excellent. We sat at a table to the right of the entrance in the back - by where there are floor to ceiling drapes. There must be some kind of entrance to the building next to Oro because we continually heard a door open and slam shut. Also, cold spot to sit as it was by a window - even with the drapes as a buffer. If I went back I would not sit here. Was very interested to try Oro as we had read all the reviews. In our opinion the food was just ok. We had the pickles - really good. Single bites - lamb heart - just ok but the beef tartare was excellent. Not impressed with the grilled pork sausage - very salty and mushy consistency. Gnocchi was excellent. Had the chicken - really nothing special - especially for the price. Service was fantastic though. Very attentive and servers knew all about every dish. I would return because of the service but not because of the food.
Not far from our convention hotel, but worlds away from the generic and uninspired dinner choices north of Market, this SOMA spot is a hidden gem. Pleasant, relaxed atmosphere, warm and enthusiastic service, and an innovative menu. Small plates much bigger than many tapas style places. Large plate big enough for 4 to share easily. Wish we lived closer so we could try some of the other delights on the menu.
I work in the industry, I don't say this often, but this was an amazing experience!!
A la carte is available here, as well as a blind tasting menu served family style for $75 pp. To make things easier with a large party, we opted for the tasting format. It turned out to be a ton of food. Our meal began with a plate of three snacks. The salt cod croquette was served hot, crispy, with a creamy salt cod filling. Sea urchin and scrambled egg was as good as it sounded, sitting atop toast. Lastly, the chicken liver mousse showed off a rich minerality and crispy brown rice cracker. A trio of appetizer courses came next. Simple green salad, fuyu persimmon, radish, herbs was as advertised--simple, crisp, and fresh. Fluke crudo, kohlrabi, fermented grape juice, bacon dressing--Fluke was very mild in flavor, paired with crispy kohlrabi and fruit. Fried pig ears, whipped buttermilk--Pig ears were fried to a crisp, smothered in a sweet chili sauce glaze. Whipped buttermilk added a rich creaminess to the bites. The third course brought in a large format clam dish paired with vegetable. Manila clams were sweet with savory sausage and plenty of lemon zest to brighten everything up. I found the sausage to be either too lean or overcooked, somewhat dry and tough, but the clams and broth were tasty. Brassicas, curried cauliflower--Plates of light, yet flavorful vegetables accompanied the clams. The next course featured two large protein dishes. Pork roast, Brussels sprouts, potato and bacon gratin--Thick slices of pork leg "steak" were juicy but not really that flavorful. The potato and bacon gratin was a hit though, with its thin layers of potato and crispy bacon exterior. Chicken, squash, pickled chad stems, pumpkin seed relish--Some of the party felt the chicken was over-seasoned, but it was okay for my palate. The chicken was juicy and more flavorful than the pork. The potatoes were great, crispy and creamy with a crème fraiche accompaniment. The final course were a couple of good desserts: Honey poached pear; Persimmon & pomegranate madeleine. Definitely return.
Amazing food, generous portions, great value for money.
My girlfriend and I went to this fine establishment for 2 meals in 3 days cause we simply didn't have enough of their wonderful food.
Both times we ordered the 5 course tasting menu, and they were fantastic. Each course was either 2 or 3 plates, and the chef prepares splendid dishes that accompanies each other on various levels of flavor and texture that really makes them taste better when you eat them simultaneously.
Each and every dish was perfectly prepared. Here is a run down of what two people tried during 2 visits (and this is not an exhaustive list as some dishes I cannot remember)
Lamb heart skewer
Salt cod croquette
Chicken liver mousse
Fried pig ears
Grilled pork sausage
New York strip
Sea salt ice cream,
Sorbet (forgot the flavor!)
And two other flavors of ice cream
All in all it was splendid. I think the minor let downs were the limited options of sea food ( it was mostly fish) and deserts.
Well executed meal and drinks. The server was great and I was thoroughly impressed with the wine list! Will be back again.
Cool atmosphere however we were really disappointed in the food. We tried a variety of suggested items and were not pleased. Gnocchi was the only thing we enjoyed. Main dish (pork) was way over priced and did not present well .

Pig ears and steak tartar are not to be missed!
I hosted a dinner for 7 with high expectations. Service was poor and food was luke warm. The place wasn't that busy either. Drinks too 20 mins to arrive. Food seemed like it had sat in the back for too long. The only redeeming quality was the manager came out to apologize and took the $42 fish dish off the bill. Tasted mealy. He also brought a round of kir as a dessert. Very nice but we won't be back.
Our service was outstanding from start to finish. The food was top notch and exciting and the cocktails were inventive and delicious. A truly fantastic establishment.
Definitely go with the food and wine pairing. Kelly Evans is a master at food and wine pairing. The staff is very knowledgeable and the food is outstanding and modern. Everything was delicious.
I live in the Soma area and was pleasantly surprised by this new spot. I though the portions were larger than you might expect at a nice place like this. We tried almost all the single bites and small plates and were stuffed.
Make sure to try the potato gnocchi, salmon roe, uni, beef tartare and of course the lamb heart. We didn't like the pig ears that much.
Oro is new and has some issues to work out. Generally, the food is very good - with some outstanding items (e.g. the chicken liver). Some dishes need work (the almond gaspacho). The wine list is diverse, but on the expensive side. More wines under $100 would be a welcome addition. The decor is attractive, with tables nicely spaced, but the night we were there, it was freezing inside. The food choices are a little odd and might not appeal to everyone. Adding a few more easily accessible foods might be an idea as well. Once they work out some of the nuances, this should be a great place!
The restaurant is a pleasant space, and as the space seems ample, I wonder if the tables could not be spaced farther apart. Ordinary conversation is no longer discreet in volume and the additional bump-bump of the nonsensical muzak makes for physiologically arduous digesting, especially since the food deserves to be enjoyed. The variety of small plates was consistently creative and tasteful. The gnocchi were of unusual and exceptional texture and the density of the sausage was perfectly crumbly.
Good but overpriced and forcing reviews to have at least 50 characters is pretty lame
