Original Roy's, Hawaii Kai Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I went to Roy's for our anniversary. The food was amazing and i have to say the portions were pretty good too. The atmosphere was perfect and our waiter Rylie was awesome as was the rest of the crew as they constantly checked on us. Before our experience was even over, we were already planning our next visit. See you soon Roy's!
My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our dining at Roy’s. From the moment we were lead to our table, each and every employee we passed said Aloha and welcomed us. Our server, Riley, was attentive and friendly. The food was delicious and they accommodated my special requests. We also watched the sun set and saw the green flash. Amazing dining experience.
the first time I went to Roys it was on Waikiki-I got it Mac nut mahi with lobster sauce. I do not like lobster but I tried it an loved it. So a few mo later I went to Roys in koolina for my bday. Again wonderful meal. So Saturday I decide since it was a weekend night I was off I wanted to treat me and my fiancé. I went to Roys in Hawai‘i Kai. The service was great but food was just ok. The lobster sauce here wasn’t good at all! I noticed it looked different - darker and really fishy tasting. Asparagus were ok potatoes weren’t cooked enough. My fiancé steak was amazing - could cut with a fork but his potatoes were so dry and gross. I was thoroughly disappointed and most likely won’t be back :( I was upset I had to pay for a meal like that! He got the pau Hana taster and I got the Reg taster. His dessert - pineapple upside down cake was amazing though. Def best part of meal!!
I was disappointed in being served a 'well done' filet/steak when I ordered it 'medium.' Meet was brown through and through. Did not send back because was dining with family and didn't want to disrupt/delay meal. Have found beef/steak orders to be subpar at Roy's in Hawaii Kai generally; will not order beef there again. Also ordered a bottle of wine listed as a '15 and was presented with a '16, which I pointed out and was informed that's all they had. Not the done thing.
Overall was good. The first Crispy Brussels Sprouts & Frisee was burnt. You could taste the charcoal on the brussels sproat. At first the waiter said that was the way it was suppose to be, but I just had it two weeks earlier and it was not burnt. They replaced it and the second one was 100% better. When they brought the Dim Sum Canoe, as the waitperson explained the items, he realized that they forgot the Baby Back Ribs. Went back to get them (took a little while). The rest of the meal went well. I really love the Classic Trio. Good mixture of different fish. Kinda noisey but I'm used to that a Roy's. The chocolate soufflé was a great as always. I still would go back.
Roy’s was a great experience. The wait staff was welcoming and friendly. The food was superb. Everything was cooked and prepared to perfection. The wine, an Italian Barolo was also perfect. Roy’s made a special occasion (Christmas dinner) into a very memorable evening.
It pains me to leave a bad review for what was once my family's favorite restaurant. We've been coming here since the 90s but probably won't be back. We have had two disappointing holiday (Christmas Eve, specially) dinners here. Last year, the waiter seemed harried and overwhelmed and forgot an entree. I had to actually get up from the table to get the waiter's attention and ask her about it. When it finally arrived, the manager tried to rectify the issue by either removing item from the bill and/or throwing in a free dessert. This year, with a smaller party (my mother and I), we thought we'd be in for a better dinner and more attentive service. We came a half hour early and sat at the bar. The bar tender was LOVELY. She was friendly and patiently answered all of our questions related to the menu (PS, maybe someone should make her job easier and actually include details about all the meat and allergens in each dish, so that she doesn't have to call upstairs every two minutes while serving drinks!). We ordered wine and the oyster beignets--which were a bust. One was close to raw (with a slightly runny batter), and the others pretty much burnt to a crisp. I wanted to keep the mood light and not complain, so I kept quiet as we headed upstairs for dinner. Our reservation was for 915 (late planning on my part), which means were were the last seating of the night. The waiter's impatience was palpable, but I felt he was honestly trying to keep it together and be patient with us as we asked questions and wondered what to eat. But he was clearly dying to go home--an attitude we didn't get from the kind and smiling busboys refilling our water and bringing us missing utensils (our salad appetizer arrived without the proper serving utensils. Come on, people!). My entree, an crab crusted opah, was half cooked. Literally the middle was raw. Was this supposed to be seared? Because I was tipsy, I ate around it and took it home.
Our absolutely favorite restaurant in Honolulu! We must go to Roy’s every time we visit Hawaii. Roy’s offers a creative menu based on fresh locally sourced ingredients. A lovely atmosphere and attentive service contribute to an exquisite dining experience !
Always a pleasure going to Roy's. Best food selection plus my 12 year old daughter can choose things she likes too since she is VERY picky. Waiters and staff are always friendly and really appreciate that you are there. And I LOVE the Anthiriums on the tables, so simple yet so beautiful.
We are frequent visitors to Honolulu and always enjoy Roy's at Hawaii Kai. We had a quiet window table in the back of the restaurant which suited us just fine. Service was attentive and my steak and shrimp entree was delicious. Chocolate lava cake is decadent.
We had the best anniversary dinner at Roy’s. Great service and amazing food! The table had a hand written anniversary card along with a $25 gift certificate to use next time we go. Loved the personal touch and surprised with the gift. We will definitely be back! Thank you =)
My friend and I came here for my birthday and also to try the restaurant week. We booked this reservation online through here, open table and received a confirmation and everything as we do when we use open table for other reservations and visits to Roy’s. We arrived and the hostess checked us in and then with a strange facial expression said we didn’t have a reservation. We felt embarrassed and caught off guard. We asked her to check again and she rudely said we don’t have anything showing up for us. We also tried to mention that we had a confirmation from open table for our reservation and she said “ well I’m not sure why but we don’t have anything so idk you’ll have to just wait because there’s people ahead of you”. She made it seem like we caused her a huge inconvenience by her having to do her job by trying to accommodate us. I understand things happen but the situation could have been handled more professionally and coming from a background in customer service her mannerism and tone when speaking to us was very inappropriate to me. Later we got seated and was told that we couldn’t have a window seat so we just decided to take it. The other hostess told us that they system was changed over or something and that could be the reason why our reservation was lost. At the end of the day I don’t feel like we as customers should be affected by a change in the companies reservation system and be treated rudely by the hostess with the blonde hair.
The Original Roy's is off the beaten path, about 15-20 mins from Waikiki. The setting is somewhat corporate, though in the daylight there is a view, across a highway, of the coast. The food is quite good, and the service is very attentive. There is nothing that is particularly special about the decor or setting or location, and in the end, we would be just as happy to eat at Roy's in Waikiki.
We love Roy’s. We decided to try the original in the hopes that corporate America had not squashed what made Roy great. Kinda mixed. The restaurant is hidden in an office plaza with signage equally hidden. (On an unrelated note, it is quite conveniently located to the local Costco.) Although the restaurant was only half-full, we were made to wait about 10-15 minutes to “check on” our table. Huh? You know we’re going to SEE that it’s been ready, right???! The server was excellent and attentive. Really spot on for not over-recommending food, considering our two senior moms and superb timing, especially for the hot bread for the apps. We appreciated the appetizer-sized entree meals for the ladies. We were disappointed to see food sitting under the lights for many, many minutes and the chef touching things after touching her face 🙁. Must do: escargot, spare ribs, butterfish and green tea soufflé. The view really warrants a sunset seating. If it were just us (a couple), we would have opted for outdoor bar seating for the breeze and live music. Still a good experience.
My wife and I visited this place for our 10 year wedding anniversary. 5 stars doesn't do this place justice! The food was beyond great. The service was hands down the best I've ever experienced , our drinks never got below half full without someone filling them. When you arrived and left, everyone you passed that worked here welcomed you or said thank you, I mean everyone including the cook. They made you feel welcome and not rushed for your table. They had a card on the table welcoming us and saying happy Anniversary. When we were done with dinner and ready to leave they gave us a 25.00 gift cert for our occasion.( this was beyond expectations). So we came back the night before we left Hawaii to visit this place again and of course use the gift card ( lol) and they blew us away again with their appreciation of our return. They brought us an appetizer on the house and then after dinner they shocked us again with a free desert!! This place and the people that work here are worth every dollar spent.
