Good food. Great customer service
Impromptu evening was accomodated with ease. Menu was limited, but the food was amazing! The service was excellent and had a comfortable yet classy feeling.
Daughter going back to college.
Asian american fusion. Solidly done. Have had variations of all dishes in other restaurants. Not unique or mind-blowing but well done and reasonably priced. Slightly underwealming cocktail program compared to today's standards. Very good desserts and attentive efficient service. Would not come back again as a tourist having experienced it once.
We had a very lovely dinner at the original Roy’s in Hawaii Kai in the last night of a week holiday in Oahu.
The reception and hostesses were incredibly kind and helpful as were running 45 minutes late stuck in rainy traffic jams from Pearl Harbor! It was a Friday evening and they did not need to be as accommodating as they were. Thank you.
Our table upstairs was lovely. Unfortunately we didn’t make it until dark so we were not able to enjoy the view that’s we knew was out there.
The food was wonderful. Elegant presentation without being “too fussy”. The quality and flavor of the food spoke for itself. The salad was dressed perfectly. The appetizer prawns were a visual treat. My Combined Ahi/yellow tail was incredible. My wife’s pork chop was sublime, if a pork chop could be described as that.
The wine list is comprehensive. The wines by the glass were limited in scope but nice enough variety to satisfy most wine enthusiasts. The house Prosecco btw is from valdobiadene, the tastiest subregion.
Only complaint, very subjective is the butterfish misoyaki. I understand that it is not truly a butterfish, but an imported cod. It reminded me of my Japanese mother’s country style fish cooked in soy sauce. Tasty but not memorable.
Roy’s molten chocolate cake is an irresistable force. Why fight the temptation?
The location is in a shopping mall as are many of the good Hawaiian restaurants. Parking, I must warn is problematic on a Friday evening. You may want to take an Uber to avoid the hassle.
I have come to the original Roy’s in Hawaii Kai many times in the past and it has always been excellent. However, the most recent time I visited was the worst dining experience I’ve had in recent memory at any restaurant.
It started off bad because we had a reservation (booked via opentable) for 2 people at 7:30. The restaurant didn’t seem overly busy but we were made to wait until 7:45 before we were seated.
Once seated, we promptly ordered appetizers and entrees. The appetizers arrived quickly and were pretty good (the ribs and spring rolls).
We then waited another 30+ minutes for the entrees. I didn’t mind waiting knowing I would certainly be delivered a delicious entree that is expected from a place like Roy’s. I ordered the filet mignon and when it arrived and I cut into it, it was cold, bloody and raw. It took me about 5 minutes to flag down a waiter in passing so I could send my steak back. About 10 minutes later (when the other person I was dining with had already finished their meal) my steak was brought back by who I assume was the manager that evening. He quickly dropped the steak off on the table and ran away (didn’t bother to ask me to cut into it to make sure it was properly cooked). I cut into my new steak and it was just as bloody and raw as the first one. It took me another 5 plus minutes to flag someone else down and send it back to the kitchen and tell them I’m giving up on eating my entree. The only person who showed true remorse over this whole debacle was the bus boy who said he wouldn’t have eaten a steak that raw either. They took the entrees off the bill which was nice but I would’ve much rather have eaten my steak and paid for it than have the experience that I got. Funny enough, the table behind us didn’t finish their pork chop because it was too raw as well. I think whoever was working the grill or broiler that night needs serious lessons on how to cook things properly.
I sure hope this isn’t the new normal at Roy’s.
The food was mixed with wonderful butter fish but poke salad tuna unflavored and only a dressing on it. Filet and scampi good but nothing special.Lava cake wonderful. Service tried to be top notch but didn’t offer pepper or clean crumbs off. View is wonderful so for special time, it may be worth it. Very expensive for quality just middle of road for most dishes.
the staff was very kind and knowledgeable of my anniversary, everyone was saying happy anniversary to us and even though we didn’t order a dessert, they brought out a complimentary happy anniversary dessert. they were really busy but the staff made sure to check on us multiple times throughout our dinner. roy’s hawai‘i kai really made our night special. you truly feel da aloha hea!
The waiter rushed us repeatedly even though the restaurant was half empty on a Monday evening.
Wonderful, as always! They know how to make us regular Joes feel special! And our toddler grandson got all his favorite foods. Our go-to anniversary celebration spot!!! Mahalo, Roy’s!
Waited for one hour to have the ordered food.
Open kitchen concept is loud and distracting
Great service and food. From the greeting at the door to the table service and wine recommendations, everything was perfect as always. Also, the butterfish is amazing.
Can never go wrong at the Hawaii Kai location. We’ve been here a few times already and will continue to come back. Great sunset view of Diamond Head too!
As always, the food was exceptional in taste and presentation (the misoyaki butterfish is a favorite), and servers were welcoming and helpful. It's a nice place for special occasions!
Thank you Zameer and Stacey! We appreciate your always taking such good care of us! Happy New Year!
Pretty steep for those courses, but the misoyaki butterfish was on point.
My wife and I have dined at Roy's for our anniversary and Valentine's about 3 times so far. We love it. We are always treated royally. The dishes wake up taste buds that have fallen asleep, with textures that stimulate the mouth. Dishes are creatively presented. From the decor to the details, everything is perfect. Note: we don't bring our kids here because they won't appreciate the refined and creative qualities here.
It was our New Year's Eve family dinner out. Roy's continued their tradition of excellent service, ono food and its presentation. The waiters (note: plural) were always attentive to our needs; they took initiative and made frequent visits for our feedback. Quick to offer to take pictures for us, including the "money picture" capturing my family as the final sunset of 2019 was about to go under the ocean behind us. The four of us each ordered a different entree, for their special "set menu." Roy Yamaguchi would have been proud of his staff.
We had such a wonderful meal and fabulous service.
Always the go-to place that reliably provides a warm and welcoming ambiance. The food is always incredible and the service is exceptional.
I was awarded a gift certificate to use which expired on January 1, 2020. Decided to go to Roy’s right after Christmas. It was an awesome dinner experience from start to finish thanks to Stephani, our server. She was so knowledgeable and well informed about the dishes and what Roy’s offered. Her personality shined and made the evening enjoyable and at ease as she periodically checked in to see where we were at in dining. There was never a moment where no drinks were available, and timed everything perfectly. Experience showed in her professionalism as well as I could overhear another patron ask her a million questions and she answered it all smoothly.
Stephani provided amazing service and if I am able to ask for her section again, I would love to sit in her area all because she was simply flawless!
Overpriced for value! The place was quite busy on a Friday night- and energetic/noisy enough that we almost had to shout to be heard. Food was OK- with the recommended lamb shank overcooked and dry. Pork chop and steamed local fish along with the sprouts being solid items. While appetizers came quickly, we had to wait a while for the main entrees. Having been to Roy's in Kona and Waikiki, this original location was a disappointment.
It was wonderful place for my birthday Celebration! Delicious & Beautiful foods ! Very good service! We all love there & definitely a 5 stars place!
It’s our favorite restaurant for celebrations. We love the entire menu.
Roy’s is the go-to place, especially if you live in the Hawaii Kai Community.
Can’t beat the food, the ambience, the service. Top notch, from the beginning till now. A livelier experience is hard to find. Five minutes from hone...who could ask for anything better?
good food great atmosphere best hospitality!! couldnt ask for more it was perfect
Service, drinks, food were all superb. The restaurant is a bit loud for dinner conversation, but not boisterous. Just loud. We had four different entrees and three different salads, one dessert, and everyone left smiling. Perfectly-sized portions. We are going again, when we can.
great food, good timing of serving different courses, drink glasses always full.
We loved this location for Roy’s - the original, we understand. Service was a little laid back but we were on vacation. Watched the sunset and enjoyed the meal and slack guitar music - my husband had short ribs and I had a vegan pasta that the kitchen customized. Our neighbors loved their desserts - pineapple upside down cake and a chocolate soufflé which had to be ordered with the mains but we also enjoyed ours - churros with dulce de le he, chocolate and pistachios. There are many Roys on the island but think this one is special.
Jamie did a wonderful job n serving us. The food continues to be wonderful
Great restaurant, but a bit noisy for a fine dining restaurant.
Best restaurant ever. Seriously, they took care of us, both nights, both at the bar and the table. All professional, and best preparation. We had reservations at Ruth Chris the second night, but decided to go back to Roy’s instead, and we were not disappointed.
As always, another great meal at the original Roy’s, which is still the best despite all Roy’s locations being consistently good. Only small criticism would be a wine list that’s a bit limited in some areas.
This is our restaurant of choice for special occasions. Celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary and although we didn’t get to see the sunset, we enjoyed the excellent service and food never disappoints. Especially loved the escargot and must have the chocolate soufflé! Will be back!
We loved everything about it. We’ll be back
Excellent ss usual, both food and service
Delicious choices, great execution!
Went to celebrate a friend’s achievements. Staff was so courteous and brought out complimentary dessert. The food was phenomenal.
Food & staff were great as usual!
