Origin North - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
I made a reservation through the original web site and received confirmation emails etc. The evening We were on our way we were late, we tried to call to let them know however the line was disconnected. We called the Toronto location who informed us that Origins North was CLOSED!! We were so discouraged and I feel his closure has been completely mismanaged in terms of customer service. Even Open Table did not communicate the closure even though I noticed it says Origin North- permanently closed!? Very disappointing experience.
Was I embarrassed...I booked for our anniversary and received confirmation from the restaurant that everything is in order. Got there and the restaurant was closed. Permanently!
Apparently they didn't pay their rent and were evicted.
Lucky me, my wife knows me for 25 years; otherwise, I would been in trouble. In the end we ate at another place.
I don't know how evictions work, but I don't think they come overnight.
At least they could've send a courtesy email that they are out of business or whatever.
The restaurant was shut down. I cannot believe that you would take reservations for a restaurant has a notice on the door saying it was closed because it was owing money. There was a very disappointed young lady who was looking forward to dinner there for a very special occasion. We answered poor for everything cause we never had a chance to try it.
I live in the area and have been meaning to try Origin North for a while now so we finally made it for dinner. It was a little bit quiet but it was a weekday.
Our server was great but the hostess seemed like she just woke up and came in to work without changing or fixing herself up. She looked pretty miserable too and seemed really fake when seating us. It was quite a contrast considering the beautiful vibe of the place (and the prices).
Food was good but their menu online is different; I saw the miso black cod online and was looking forward to it but they didn't have it on the menu in the restaurant. Overall pretty good; with a few tweaks this place could be really great and I could see myself being a regular here. I might try again in a month or 2.
Nice ambience. The brunch fare was tasty, though nothing special. Waitress seemed new so rather than coming off friendly and attentive, she seemed assertive and in our faces.
Their americano is weak; we went for another round of coffee at starbucks after.
At least the place wasn't packed so it was a nice girls get together / catch up over brunch, and the place served our purposes perfectly.
This restaurant is just trying to be something its not. Prices, exterior and menu suggest upscale and delicious dining, but interior ambiance of large screen tv in bar, apathetic servers and tasteless food suggest otherwise. Should have stopped at the predinner martini that was served in an ice cream dish. Oh well....keep trying.
While the food was generally quite good, the steak was medium when the order was for rare. Unfortunately, the martini was the worst I've ever experienced; either someone didn't know how to mix the drink, or the vermouth had been replaced by some other unrecognizable, unfermented wine must minus the usual aromatic herbs, roots, or barks typically added for flavour.
I first went to Origin in its downtown location and was super impressed with the food and how fresh and creative it was. Have been to Origin North a couple of times and each time, have been less and less impressed. On this last visit, the menu has changed completely to the point where I would compare it to chain restaurant, or worse. We brought our friends there in the hopes that we would be introducing them to something different. I had the fish tacos, which is probably the worse I've had. For $17, it was literally just two tacos with some garnish and a skinny piece of fish in each, no sides, nothing. My husband had a chicken sandwich that he didn't even want to finish. Looking at our guests dishes (duck tacos and miso glazed cod), I was truly embarrassed that we had chosen this restaurant to bring them to. Neither dish looked appetizing. Their signature drinks were also mediocre at best. I had ordered a dirty martini and it came as a pale yellow colour with no hint of alcohol taste whatsoever. Tasted like pure olive juice. We skipped on dessert as we were completely done with the meal at that point. Bless the waiter who provided attentive service. The restaurant used to be a happening place but there were only a handful of tables on a Friday night. Sad.
The service was very poor. I love fish tacos and was very disappointed with their burnt offering. Horrible food experience. The only thing good about this place was the fact that it was not noisy and that was because the place was empty on a Thursday night.
Please note when you pay by debit or credit the default gratuity is 20%. With such poor service and food, I was stunned to see that they thought they deserved 20% as a default. RUDE! You need to press "Other" to change the percentage rate.
The food is horrible!!!!
I ate there when the restaurant first opened. The menu was a tapas type menu and the food was great.
I have been there two times recently. Last time had fish tacos which were not very good. Thought it might be a one off so gave it another go as friend wanted to try the restaurant. Beet salad was overly salty, fresh vegetables consisted of mainly over cooked oily bean sprouts, crispy calamari was not at all crispy and drowning is the overly sweet sauce that should be served on the side but wasn't, and perogies were fried to the point that you needed a steak knife to cut. I was so shocked to find out Claudio Aprile is still the owner, he should be embarrassed to put that food out.
Sever was very friendly but we barely saw her as it appeared she was the only one serving... Albeit there was hardly anyone there. The empty restaurant should have been a clue to eat else where.
I have no doubt this restaurAnt will be closed soon.
Extremely disappointed by the quality of dishes. The waiter was diligent, but the food came out too slow for a Thursday afternoon with very few customers; we spent close to 2.5 hrs there. The salad was bitter-- frankly a bit gross. Also could not justify paying $17 for fish tacos at sub-par quality. Overall experience fell below expectation. Won't be coming back anymore.
Service was sub-par at best. They couldn't find me reservation -booked through open table - and gave us a hard time even in a near empty restaurant. Table service was slow.
Food was mediocre. I've definitely had better at the location downtown and even at this location when it first opened.
Will not visit again.
One of my favourite restaurants. The food is fantastic and the plating is wonderful. The entire staff are truly amazing! I love the decor. A great place for any occasion. We dine there often and it's very consistent. Not to mention there are so many "must try" dishes. The pappardelle, sushi pizza, beet salad, Thai mussels........ The list goes on!
Service was excellent. Very few people there on a Friday night. Ordered the calamari as a starter and the chicken club as a main.
Calamari was excellent.
The chicken club was not a club sandwich but rather a chicken breast on a bun with an overly sweet onion chutney. Not a club and not dressed as a club, though this was not stated on the menu.
Not a terrible experience but underwhelming. No incentive to return for dinner.
Looked up online for top10 places for brunch, this came up in the top 3, wasn't too far away from home so figured my girlfriend and I would try it. We arrived Sunday morning just before our 11am reservation which was placed online, very easy to do which was great. The place wasn't busy, which was also nice.
Overall, experience was decent but not stellar for an upper-scale dining establishment.
I believe the gentleman looking after our table was Christos, he was pretty good. But some other things were less than stellar.
I started off with a coffee, and Christos said, "I'll bring cream/sugar" then another gentleman (didn't see his name tag) who walked right by our table, seen the table behind is was already full with drinks/food, walks back and says, "did you order the coffee?" then sets down coffee cup with some milk and some cream. Wheres the sugar? And why didn't Christos bring it? When Christos came over, I requested if he could bring some sugar, didn't even clue in to him that it wasn't there to start with, wasn't to keen on that. But at least the coffee was good.
I opted for the Bangers & Mashed plate, which was great. Though the potatoes were a little cold on the right side, but everything else was warm which I found odd. My girlfriend had the french toast which I think I should've got instead, it was amazing.
We really want to like this place as there is nothing nearby! The room and patio are lovely. We were so excited to have this in the area and keeping hoping it will deliver
The food is trying way too hard and below average. This should be fine dining at its best, but for unknown reasons cannot get beyond mediocre.
Good drinks and nice wines - but unless that's what you are coming for (and the staff are often very snobby if you do) there are much better places, you just have to drive.
Nice looking restaurant that constantly underdelivers. Menu is interesting, then food arrives and seems "pre-prepared" eg the duck tacos used to be fresh and excellent - now just plonked into shells with a dab of sauce. Cocktails were good. Nothing in the area, so people come adn restaurant is not forced to be the best it can. A shame.
Perhaps one of the better food options in Bayview Village. Service is fantastic - Lily made wonderful recommendations and provided great care and attention. Food was delivered to the table at the perfect pace, the presentation of the food was beautiful, and the flavours were nice. Overall, my table left happy and impressed.
We went on Mother Day to celebrate. When we arrived I found the restaurant smoky as maybe the ventilations system was either not on or strong enough. The food was very good and presentation good as well. The service was slow and as much as I know it was a busy day, was slower than would have been expected.
Overall, food was good. A bit of a hit and miss though. Loved the scones and smoked salmon Benedict, but the deviled eggs and Origin burger wasn't as good as the other two items we ordered. I saw someone else get the burger as well, and their burger visually looked better than the one we got.
The ventilation may be a bit poor, because it was really smoky inside and we were close to the windows (away from the kitchen).
And while there was a delay with our food, staff was super polite and offered us complimentary appetizer (deviled eggs).
Haven't been here since it first opened. I remember they had a tapas menu which was great. Current menu doesn't have a lot ifs hating items. Had fish tacos which were pretty bland, too much taco not enough fish. Ordered the beet salad but never got it. Maybe Claudio is spending to much time on TV and not enough in the restaurant.
At time of reservation told it was Friends birthday... They wished her a happy birthday but that was it.
Not thrilled, won't go back unless someone rants about improvements in the future.
