We had a Sunday lunch. We all ended up ordering breakfast. The menu was varied with a lot of healthy options. They had a good kids menu.
The food arrived promptly and was delicious. Our waiter was courteous and friendly. Service was excellent.
I will definitely go again.
Honestly, I’ve been finding fabulous restaurants on open table for years. I look at ratings and reviews. I look at the interior and the menu and especially the ratings...this was absolutely the worst experience in YEARS.
First of all, I made it clear that this was a special occasion and it was NEVER recognized. The restaurant looked so much different in the photo, The wait staff told us the food was great and everything was wonderful....we all disliked our food so much that it could’ve ruined our evening, but we had so many things to talk about that we found solace in that.
So, the food....I ordered one of my favorite dishes...when made correctly Osso bucco is succulent pieces of pork that falls off the bone in a rich; abundantly colored sauce made from wine, mushrooms and seasoning....this was dry, the vegetables were aldente and there was no flavor.
My son ordered spinach/ricotta stuffed chicken breast. That, looked like 2pieces of cardboard with a sauce. He eats everything(usually) and didn’t eat this.
My husband had “fried chicken”. When it arrived at the table, I wondered what the heck it was. It didn’t look like(or apparently tasted like fried chicken) Maybe there is a hidden reason to this place, but it is not good food. The only thing that I ate was a salad that was lovely mixed greens with a very acidic vinaigrette.
I think what amazed us was that the restaurant was full, but nobody looked ecstatic.....hmmmmm
We were greeted warmly by host, Chris, and given our choice of seating as we were the start of dinner time. Our server René was super attentive but in a laid back non-intrusive way. The food was amazing, ( halibut and stuffed chicken breast, brussel sprouts and sweet potato hash) the music was great, the service was impeccable. They even treated us to dessert ( chocolate mousse, yum) in honor of my husband’s birthday, that we were celebrating. A perfect evening . We will definitely be back.
Wanted to like this restaurant because of the good reviews but the wait was too long. We came in for brunch on a Sunday. After waiting 15 minutes after our reservation to be sat down, we had to haul down a waiter from a different section to order because our waiter was no where to be found. The coffees took forever (simple black American coffee they pour from a large jar), the food took even longer. Restaurant was half empty. Our waiter (who was not supposed to wait on our table) was very nice, we didn't walk out because of him. Food was okay - pretty bland.
I ordered the short ribs and they came out incredibly burned. While the chef remade the dish they excused its texture describing it as "seared." My husband ordered the hanger steak. It was cool to the touch and the vegetable medley was a hot/cold mixture. I would not recommend for the price.
We had a reservation. 20+ mins past the reserved time we were seated. Our apps were forgotten for another 20+ mins.
That being said the cocktails and food were very good, especially for our Paleo, Whole30 crew's needs. I'd recommend it bc it seemed like we were the only ones getting shafted and we had a good time. They comp'ed the apps so that was nice. Bad service impression, great food. I'll have to try again sometime.
How do you run out of Bread Pudding during Restaurant Week at 7:30 pm? We had to wait for quite some time to order drinks because our waiter disappeared. The food could be seasoned more. The chicken chimichurri was dry, but my friends say the steak was delicious. The bread pudding that we waited to see if we wee going to get..........they could have kept it. Who makes bread pudding with no cinnamon or nutmeg, buttery taste, etc. I have to wonder is the chef from the South..............Once was enough for me in regards to the food. The Gold Rim Margaritas were really good.
We went for Restaurant week, which meant a four-course limited selection menu. The calamari was delicious and the breading was nice and light, though the Thai salad was incredibly spicy. It went downhill from there. The "halibut with risotto" was a cooked-to-death piece of what was once a beautiful fish, served on top of white rice with butter--I don't know how they call that "risotto." For the cookie and ice cream dessert, the cookie was also overcooked. There is nothing appealing to me about a dark brown cookie that you have to break in order to eat. Overall, great ambiance but there are too many other better options in Dallas for me to go here again.
Maybe it was an off night, but you'd think a restaurant would bring their A-game if they participate in restaurant week. Our group wasn't impressed and won't be back. It was really the service that was consistently poor from start to finish. Service makes all the difference, especially if the food isn't executed particularly well and the menu isn't all that creative. The server who took our order struggled quite a bit and didn't seem to know what was on the menu. We never saw him again after that. We waited 20+ minutes for the first course, but then we were rushed through the next 2 courses only to be waiting again for the dessert course. Apparently there was some problem with the egg setting for the bread pudding. We had to flag down staff to find this out though, and they didn't seem too concerned whether we were happy or not. Seemed like they're both under staffed and staffed with the wrong people (lack of experience, not professional, not happy to be there). We saw lots of scrambling to put in orders and get plates out. Not a well oiled machine, no rhythm or flow, and we could feel the tension as customers. The last thing we saw as we left sums it up well - the hostess was slumping/kicked back fully engrossed in her mobile phone. What a shame for all the customers on this Saturday night, especially if they were as excited as us initially.
They let us know the moment we walked in that they were under staffed which I appreciated. Our food took a little too long but the manger brought us a quick appetizer as a comp to hold us over until our order arrived. We knew they were all working hard to make up for being under staffed. Luckily we were in no rush and enjoyed the longer dinner service. I love eating here because they accommodate all my food allergies so easily and the menu has really great offerings.
The service has continuously dwindled over the last 6 months to the point where we will likely not be coming back. Not sure if ownership or management has changed, but whomever is hiring needs to do a better job vetting the host/hostess and server positions. We make reservations each time, but the last 3 times we've stood at the host's stand for over 5 minutes waiting for someone who works there to seat us . . . and there was no line. Several times recently, when we are finally seated, we've had to wait over 10 minutes to have a server come take our drink order. Last time I watched two servers bicker over whose table it was to serve while we just sat and watched the exchange, waiting for menu. A couple times in the last 2 months I've had to send my order back (The King) because the server didn't hear me request the gluten-free option (I have a real wheat allergy; not being trendy). They apologized for the inconvenience, sure, but I had to wait 10 more minutes for my correct order while watching my wife eat hers.
And if you want the bill so you can leave, well that, too, can take some patience. The server will actually have to come back to check on you - which the last 3 times our server checked on us only after 30 minutes!
If you do go here, go alone and sit at the bar. Service at the bar is still wonderful, I guess because they can't miss you.
Overall there is a real lack of attentiveness here, as if the servers/hosts are too busy to be bothered. Last year this restaurant felt like a quaint spot to eat and feel welcome, like a small town diner, where the sugar caddy was full and the staff seemed genuinely pleased to see you. Today, not at all. Which is terribly frustrating because the food is so damn good.
We really enjoyed this restaurant! The food was delicious and the service has above and beyond. We were wanting some Paleo options for food and have honestly tired of HG Supply and how overrated the place really is. We cannot say enough great things about Origin! We will definitely be returning!!!
We ate here earlier this week and LOVED our meals, our drinks, and our overall experience. They were happy to accommodate a party of 10 with just half an hour's notice, and the service we received was top notch. Delicious seasonal menu, fabulous craft cocktails, and wonderful service. Origin Kitchen + Bar is a winner!
