Orange County Mining Co. Ratings and Reviews
Disappointed in follow-up on reservation - even with reservation and not too busy we were directed to the bar for 10 minutes. Service there was slow and waitress was 1/2 through taking bar order when paged for dinner. Through OT reservation had requested chaired tabled - were seated in booth, advised of special celebration (Anniversary) and that was never brought up. As always food and ambiance were outstanding.
Disappointing. We arrived early for our reservation and were told to wait in the bar. No host ever came for us so around our reservation time we checked back in and they were seating others with later reservation times than ours. We finally got a (lousy) table right in front of the kitchen, far from the windows. Disappointing since I requested a table with a view as it was our anniversary, but I wasn't going to make a big deal about it since it was a busy night.
Before I had made the reservation I had made sure there was a vegetarian option, the miner's veggie plate. But when I went to order, the waitress told me the asparagus is steamed in chicken broth and it isn't actually vegetarian. Not wanting to ruin our anniversary, I sighed and ordered the $22 salad bar. I later discovered that not one of the soups they offered was meat-free, not even what appeared to be a tomato bisque type soup. The potato salad bowl was taken away and never replaced in the salad bowl the entire time we were there. I paid $22 for a plate of salad and some watermelon.
My date's swordfish was pricey and not that big of a portion--sides were disappointing. We went in with high hopes and left feeling ripped off and disappointed. I left an email to Mining Co.'s management and received no response.
We've been wanting to try this place out for a while and we finally did for my birthday. The restaurant sits on top of a rather steep hill so the drive up to it is a little precarious. But once your up there, the view is amazing. The ambiance around the restaurant is very rustic and rickety, as the name might suggest. The bar is stocked with a ton of whiskeys for aficionados like myself. The menu also suggests a very old West style, lots of steaks and hearty foods. There is also a soup and salad bar, which I tried the smoky tomato soup which was excellent. The steak I had was delicious and cooked rare to perfection. There was one table very near us that was obnoxiously drunk and loud but once they cleared out, the restaurant was quiet enough to have normal conversation. Even our waiter said the staff could hear them clear across the restaurant and in the kitchen area. Overall I would highly recommend this restaurant
The view from the restaurant and through the windows was magnificent. The decor was great. The service was excellent. The food was excellent. Especially enjoyed the soup and salad bar as this is not the norm these days. Great choice of items to choose from. Only negative was the noise level as there are no acoustics and difficult to hear across the table. Service was excellent and everyone polite and friendly.
Looked forward to a special place for our anniversary that we had not been too prior. The view was nice, but not the best weather for seeing the ocean or LA. The salad bar and cheese bread were enough for a 5 Star review, but we both had the Philly with butter and mushrooms. Every bite was juicy and melt in your mouth satisfying. Will definately return soon
The food was really awful. We've been here for brunch, which was fine, but their week night dinner was disgusting. I needed to eat something else to get that horrible taste out of my mouth. Their tomato soup, chili bean soup, cheese bread and barbecue sauce all tasted the same. How does that work? The price was outrageous for what you got too. The service was inattentive. Our plates of half eaten food were piled very high on our table before anyone noticed and then they only took a quarter of the plates away. Never again.
Having to wait at the soup bar for bowls, unacceptable. (not properly training a staff member to maintain this area) Having to request crackers for the Clam Chowder only to be told they ran out of them unacceptable. (send someone to the store for goodness sakes you don't run out of crackers, you run out of the fresh catch of the day) Having to request the famous garlic cheese bread twice, before our soup and salad were gone, unacceptable. The service was adequate. The view spectacular. Overall experience to celebrate a birthday was fair.
Orange County Mining Company has the best soup and salad bar of anywhere! They have a nice variety of soups and a variety of salad items that you do not see anywhere else and the salad is served on ice-cold tin plates. Soup and salad and delicious warm garlic cheese bread is included with the entrees. The view is great from high atop the mountain. We always take out-of-town guests or special friends there and everyone is extremely impressed. With a reservation through Open Table there is no waiting for a table. That is our "go-to" place for a special evening out.
We went there for my wife's birthday. The staff were friendly and kept a good eye on us without being overbearing. The food was great and the views were spectacular. We got there just before sunset and it was a really great view. This will be another one to do again.
We were very disappointed on this visit, having had good experiences there in the past. There was a line of cars up their steep private hill and it took 20 minutes to reach mandatory valet parking and caused us to be late for our reservation. They now charge $5 for mandatory valet parking with no street parking available. We normally self park there in their handicapped parking area but all spots were taken. The salad bar, normally fresh and extensive, had many items missing and all were bland. The noise level was very loud. The trout was very good and waitress service was also very good. Valet parking guys were rude and unprofessional and demanded their $5 fee even though we wanted to park in a free handicapped spot and mentioned that we never had to pay for valet parking there previously. A poor evening I will not repeat.
Good service at the table, but hostess forgot about us leaving us in the bar. Open Table said they have no corkage fee, and they do-$15. It was comped. Food was mediocre. View is spectacular. I have been going there for 45 years, so I won't stop now. Quiet spot for a nice visit with friends.
