Operacaffe Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I were seeing a show across the street and made a reservation for dinner at Operacaffe. The atmosphere was nice, it felt like a neighborhood trattoria. The waiter was attentive and friendly and the service was prompt. The focaccia bread was served warm with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and was delicious. We split a very nice salad to start with avocado and hearts of palm making it unique and the light dressing making it a wonderful beginning. We both ordered veal dishes, something we don't frequently order, and we were pleased with the tender meat and flavorful sauces. My saltimbocca alla romana was served with a wonderfully creamy risotto and fresh asparagus and my husband's veal parmigiana was served with tasty pasta pomodoro. We would definitely recommend this restaurant, especially if you are seeing a show across the street at the Balboa Theater.
This place was unexpected. This area of San Diego has a WIDE variety of people, so be prepared for that. The food was amazing. That was why we selected this restaurant. They claimed to make home-made pastas and the do!! The service was very good as well, and speedy.
Such an amazing find! The food is fantastic! We had the crab ravioli and lobster tortellini and truly thought we were in food heaven! And the desserts were amazing too! We enjoyed the tiramisu! Oh so good! We also had a frozen chocolate dessert that was out of the world! I highly recommend Operacaffe.
Wonderful food. Started with the polenta with ham, mushrooms and Gorgonzola cheese. Highly recommend it. Tortellini stuffed with crab was to die for. Service started out good as it was not busy. As the evening progressed, the restaurant filled up and it was very unorganized. Perhaps they were short staffed. I was thankful we had allowed plenty of time before the show at the Balboa Theatre.
I found this place just walking down the street, looking for a place to eat with my sister and some friends after being told there was going to be a 2 hour wait at our planned destination. This is now my new favorite restaurant! The food here is AMAZING and everything that we ordered was delicious. I have since brought my family and co workers multiple times and everyone has loved it.
Went to celebrate a birthday. Staff was very pleasant and attentive. We ordered appetizers and were offered the choice of adding an extra piece to each plate so that each person would get equal amounts. We each ordered different entrées and all were delicious. The lemon chicken with risotto was wonderful. They brought the birthday girl her very own tiramisu to celebrate the occasion. I'm looking forward to the next celebration!
Excellent Italian food. A little pricey, but very good quality. Most interesting feature was strolling singers performing opera and Broadway show tunes (at least on a Saturday night.) Great place for a date in a very happening neighborhood with a lot of entertainment options before or after a meal.
Overall a great experience. Would be an easy 5 star overall rating but we felt a bit ignored by the waiter and couldn't fit in dessert time before leaving for a downtown show. Maybe it was an issue with being short staffed that night, but it's a great restaurant!
I've eaten at plenty of Italian restaurants in my lifetime. In fact, it's my favorite cuisine. My wife and I chose this restaurant, because it was quaint, and while out and about in San Diego, we noticed how attentive the waiter was to the customers seated outside. Unfortunately, the food did not match the service. I had the chicken alfredo. The sauce seemed watered down, and there was minimal chicken. I forget exactly what dish my wife had. It certainly wasn't memorable. My wife and I both speak Spanish. We overheard the waiter tell the ladies seated near us, in Spanish, that if they didn't like the meal, they wouldn't have to pay. I wish he'd extended that offer to us. I might have taken him up. Hope this review helps. We live in Westchester, Illinois. So, there's probably not much of a chance we'll ever dine there again.
I have only found a handful of Italian restaurants in San Diego that can offer a meal as deliciously authentic as the ones that I left behind in New York. I think the Opercaffe is my new favorite. Every bite of my Penne Speperina was exquisite, the perfect blend of spicy sausage, cheese, pasta & sauce. My thanks to our waiter for his recommendation. My fellow diner was equally happy with her dinner. My chardonnay was lovely, as was our desert.
I'll be eagerly looking forward to my next visit.
Wonderful experience! The food was outstanding with perfect portion sizes. Everything was prepared fresh to order and piping hot. The hostess was friendly and the staff hustled to make our dining experience memorable. Along with the food, the highlight of the evening were the opera singers. Very talented and enjoyable without being overwhelming.
The Operacaffe is my go-to restaurant when I'm downtown for an event. This time, a Saturday evening in July, it was quite crowded. Reservations were a must. Due to that, the wait staff was a little stretched, but they did a fantastic job. The food was excellent as always, and the opera performances lively and fun. I highly recommend this place for that romantic/date night downtown.
