Open Range - Calgary Ratings and Reviews
The food was tasty and inventive. Good use of the local produce on offer. Between four of us we ate elk, two cuts of bison, and arctic char, accompanied by many delicious preparations of corn and potatoes. This is Calgary in January, so the fresh greens were sparse. I had a side salad with delicious pickled apple and blue cheese; great flavour but a bit hard to eat, it sort of sprawled across the plate, great big leaves had to be cut before eating. I think there was a bit too much concern for the presentation here.
The pace was a bit off. Starters came very quickly but then we waited ages for the mains. Our server was polite and apologized for this, but it was quite a long gap.
We agreed that the highlight was my bison short ribs. I order short ribs whenever I see them, and these were as good as any I've had. Sticky, sweet, falling apart, full round flavour. They were on a delicious bed of grits with an excellent biscuit. My wife had the arctic char, beautifully prepared, and a side of asparagus with manchego.
All in all it was a good meal. Obviously at a place like this meat is going to be the main event (and the meat was very well cooked in all cases), but we would have preferred to see a wider range of vegetable sides. Our main dishes were also slow, but the food was great.
Walking into Open Range gave me a western type feel. It has taxidermy on the walls, nice fireplaces and very quiet atmosphere. The menu had a small selection but very focused on organic type food (buffalo, lamb, beef). The steak that I had (peppercorn steak) was terrific, the best I have ever eaten. The staff was really friendly. Great place to take a date or quiet evening out.
Good service. Have been here before and had a server who had an attitude and was very unaccommodating re dealing with the bill. We were a large group and he left us unsatisfied. Thought we would try again for the food. This last visit the server was great. Nice ambiance. Food this last time seemed overpriced and the elk was dry. Other dishes at the table were uneventful which was disappointing considering the cost.
We have been here several times and are on the hunt for elsewhere.
The food was decent but really not worth the price. The decor is quite stuffy; this is not a place for a relaxed date. The main negative thing that really turned us off was that the manager was quite rude to us. He snapped at us when we moved tables and remained unfriendly. The waitress was nice enough but I wouldn’t go back.
We are here on a Tuesday and tried some of the tacos and they were amazing. We also split the porterhouse which was huge and tender and delicious. The service was wonderful, our waiter was knowledgable, cheerful, and helpful but not intrusive. Fantastic meal overall.
This was our second time at Open Range, the first for our anniversary a few months ago and it was a wonderful experience. Our good friends wanted to celebrate, so they asked if I would make a reservation here as they have been numerous times.
Unfortunately, we were left feeling somewhat disappointed. The enchiladas were dry, the rib chop was tough, and the service was ok at best. Our friends are quite reserved, and they didn't want to make a fuss about the food; I'm prone to bring things up right away but they asked us not to, so I acknowledge that we didn't provide the opportunity to make things right immediately. Part of their reluctance was our server- She was sometimes accommodating, but I think she was trying to be edgy and maybe a bit funny or something, but her attempted level of "comfort" with us mostly came across as unprofessional and a bit rude (she rolled her eyes and acted unimpressed with us a number of times).
When it came to pay the bill, we had 2 cards for free wine or beer from our anniversary dinner. I had them sitting on the table all night but she didn't see them, and when I brought it to her attention, she said "you can only use one of those", despite it not saying so anywhere on the card. I said "I'm sorry, where does it say that?" but she walked away.
So to summarize, we won't be hurrying back. Our first experience was SO good we were really excited to return, but unfortunately it doesn't seem that there's consistency with food quality or service.
The Stampede inspired menu was tempting - we indulged in the corn dogs which were amazing. The entrees we ordered were all excellent and Shannon provided wonderful service. We would come back just to see her but there are a number of items on the menu that we have to come back for.
This is the 3rd or 4th time that we have dined at Open Range food was very good. However, my wife did not care for the mussels I thought they were great. The main entree was very good and I cheated my diet and had dessert which was awesome. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Food was nicely prepared and presented. I had the prime rib feature of the day. Meat was a little rubbery but very tasty. Potatoes and veggies were delicious and Yorkshire pudding perfect. Calamari appetizer was nice but over-the-top garnish on it was annoying. Companions' food was good but they also commented on the excessive garnishing. Service was prompt and efficient though the waiter seemed like he was thinking of other things and wasn't the most friendly. Ambience is perfect - low key, comfortable, quiet. Will come again.
Had a good meal here on Mother's Day with my mom - though I should have looked a little more closely at the online menu, as there was a limited number of options for an older person who's not too adventurous in her food choices. Mom had the beef tacos, minus the avocado and with the sauce on the side - as it turned out, it was a little spicier than she's used to, though she enjoyed the food. I had the lamb shanks with 2 great big chunks of chorizo (or at least an Alberta version of it - not very spicy in this case) sitting on a bed of polenta. Overall, the food was good and the service was pleasant. Being Mother's Day, there were a couple of large parties and a number of children, but that didn't really take away from the experience.
I am so glad I chose this spot for our anniversary!! Even though we were on a strict budget, it met every need we had which was steak, cocktails, wine dessert and fairly quit! I love it here and server Amanda, bartender Evan, and chef Dwayne were also amazing, fun, and informative!! Will definitely go back!!
We went here for the first time for our anniversary. We originally were seated in the dining area, and there was a loud business group so we asked to move and we were immediately seated in the lounge. What a lovely space, with nice music and gorgeous art, which perfectly complimented the amazing food and outstanding service. We had the fritters, porterhouse and short ribs and each was beyond excellent! We will certainly return.
