Average food, but good experience. A light was on for most of our meal giving a small light source too but I would expect that isn't the norm.

We had a great time. It was an I to any that is not afraid of the dark.

Opaque serves dinners in total blackout darkness and the servers are legally blind. Elimination of all visual cues results in a heightened dining experience emotionally, psychologically and gastronomically. The food is essentially a delicious, sophisticated, multi-choice menu (roasted meats, grilled salmon, vegetarian options; interesting appetizers and rich desserts, and there is a full bar. What distinguished the evening and makes it unforgettable is the enhancement of not being able to see any of it, nor those with whom you are seated, or even your own hand in front of your mouth. This elevates the diners' attention, makes conversations more intimate and rewarding and deepens the adventure. (Note: taking the mystery meal" option means that you won't know in advance what is on your plate. A delightful addition to a rich experience.

I have never dined in the dark before and I must say, it was a unique and memorable experience. I chose my items from the menu but, if I were to go again, I would choose the surprise menu instead. Our server was amazingly attentive and helped navigate our way through every "challenge." The food was good, not outstanding, they used a bit too much oil for me. However, there were many varieties to choose from. Try this restaurant if you are looking for a new dining adventure!

Besides drinking half of our bottle of pahlmeyer we brought, and blowing a pre arranged birthday dessert. Food mediocre, nothing more then you could make at home. Joking food and recipe quality and small portions. Stay home. Turn the lights out and make a frozen dinner. You'll eat more , get to enjoy your entire bottle of wine and not be rushed out

Our server, Cortney, made the whole experience. She was so helpful and fun. I was surprised how I was unable to identify many items by taste without the visual. Overall, a very interesting experience.

Something everyone should try once. An experience unlike anything I've done before. The food was not anything I would brag about, but it didn't matter because the experience was really cool. Our served Mocha was AMAZING! We loved chatting with her and getting to know her experience.

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. He had no idea what we were going to doing. We arrived and went to the bar to wait for our reservation. The bartender was very talented and it was almost like watching him do a show! When we finally went into the dining area we were lucky enough to have Sergio who was great. We chose the Secret Menu which I highly recommend! The food was great!! This is an experience you don't want to miss out on!

I loved the entire experience. The food was good and the service was even better. Mocha was amazing.

Go for the experience. Go elsewhere for the food. Wouldn't recommend.

Pros:
-This is a great place if you're looking for something unique. I went for my boyfriend's birthday and it was very nice and intimate not be able to see one another and just talk. It was a nice break from checking our phones every 5 minutes (you have to power your phone off before you go in).

-The staff was very nice, especially the greeters in the front! They recommended us having a random, mystery meal instead of choosing each of our courses, which made the experience more fun!

Cons:
-Food was NOT worth the price. I read this before coming, but it's actually true. There were small portions and it was just OK. The drinks weren't amazing either. Basically you're paying $100/person here for the experience, NOT the food.

-The waiter kept calling us by the wrong names. After correcting him several times, we kept trying to slyly say our names over and over so he would get the hint, but every time he came to our table he would call us different names -which made me a little upset based on how much we were paying, but I think it might have been his first week so we let that slide.

Overall, I would not come back here because it's overpriced, but I would recommend this experience to anyone looking to try something new!

Well-executed experience. No sense fussing with food presentation or preparation complexity in complete darkness. All that matters is great service and quality ingredients, simply rendered to the plate. Our server Kimness, was great. There's an unavoidable intimacy that comes from placing your hands on the server's shoulders (and having your partner place her hands on your shoulders) in order to be guided to your seat. And once seated, as you negotiate space on the table for plates, utensils and glasses while sharing food, you appreciate for a short while, if you are a sighted person, the ability to focus on your other senses. Others have commented on the background music sound level being a bit too high, but I don't feel this way. I do think it's a bit more noticeable, however, as I found the human noise level to be much lower than in other restaurants. My guess is that the darkness induces people to converse more quietly, which is kinda nice.

This restaurant is a must-do just for the experience. I had read about it but was still surprised by the absoluteness of the dark. It is darker than when you close your eyes! Ask the waiter to bring a pitcher of water and refill your glass yourself - it's fun figuring out how to adopt to doing things by feel and sound.

I took my boyfriend on a surprise date to Opaque when he flew in to visit me over Thanksgiving. We had such an enjoyable time! We both loved the complimentary "mystery soups" and having to figure out how to pass around food/drinks we wanted to try in total darkness. Highly recommended.

Was a little upset when someone rudely turned their cell phone on at another table and completely illuminated the room. They were quickly told to shut it off and then did it again. Other then that this is my second time dining with opaque always so much fun.

I brought my girlfriend here as a surprise. She had no idea what we were doing until the hostess told her. My girlfriend was scared and didn't want to do it. Our waitress Courtney eased her nerves and 2 min into the darkness, she loved it! It was one of the best experiences of my girlfriend and my life!

a difficult to describe, but viscerally wonderful dining experience. the food was definitely good, but the experience of eating in the dark brought it to a new level.

The hotel it's in is very unique. Bar decoration outside is "butterfly collector" themed, which was awesome and very fancy feeling. Dining in the dark was very freaky in the beginning, but a great experience to discover the food with my wife. We asked for surprise menu and they even brought different plates for each one of us at every course. Sharing in the dark was very romantic and messy (which is fun). Some veggies were a little cold, but it makes sense since we were exploring the food with our hands and didn't want to burn our fingers. Totally recommend!

It was my first time there and I was on a date. Mocha was my server and she is so nice, kind,patient, and has a good sense of humor! The food was delicious! For a starter dish we had Tiger Shrimp and ceasar salad. Entree was a Chicken dish and a Filet Mingon. Dessert was Cheese cake and sorbet ice cream. I would say the food and the dining in the dark experience was worth the money! $99 per person not including tax. The separate bar outside of Opaque is pricey, so i recommend jus getting a glass of wine inside Opaque. All in all, the experience was outstanding, memorable and i would definitely come back again.

This is my second time at dining in the dark and i couldnt have had a better experience. I took my boyfriend for his birthday and danny made our experience one we wont forget. she was friendly and the service was the best. We like to laugh and make jokes and she contributed to our laughter. Jennifer was passing by and added to our experience. it was close to closing and they still gave us some time to talk about thier experience working there and answered all of our questions. ive already recomended dining in the dark and have told people to ask for danny or jennifer but really i would go back and ask for dannyfer because those two together would be unstoppable. i dont know if anyone has ever heard them sing but our happy birthday song was so lovely! why there isnt live soft chill music beats me you already have 2 singers on staff. THank you for that wonderful time!

Extremely cool! Fun experience! Kudos to the visually impaired servers. Don't know how you do it but great service! The reception process and finalizing the billing could use some attention. Each required a bit of asking to get things moving. Overall, a great experience!

Great experience... Something you have to do at least one time!

Starting with the intro and Mike the bartender, the evening is 'visible' and full of laughter and entertainment. You make your selections and the rest is up to your imagination because you an see NOTHING. I though by my eyes adjusting some light would become visible. Not.
The staff are great and Courtney is the best. She was extremely attentive and just to think my few hours of dinner darkness is her everyday world. You come to depend on your hand mouth coordination because the eyes are no help. It's a wonderful evening full of sensory moments

The experience is unique but once you've done it the food doesn't really rate enough to bring you back. In addition apparently they moved some time ago but have not updated their website and we went to the wrong address first. When we told the check in personnel they were not to apologetic about it as we had just hike uphill about a mile to get to the new address. Our waiter was great. Overall though for $200 I would say stay in the light

We went to Opaque for Valentine's Day and didn't realize that this was a "pop up" since they had closed their original location. They only had a couple of days to set up in the Cafe Majestic location which was probably a feat in itself, however, the overall experience was less than expected primarily from the food quality standpoint and especially for the price. I had heard good things about the food, but this was a very simplified menu with a choice of a filet, salmon or vegetable lasagna. The three course meal was what you would expect of a meal at Applebees or other chain with a caesar salad, salmon and chocolate mousse cake, ie lava cake but not molten. Again, I understand that the temporary location probably had a lot to do with this but that doesn't mean my expectations should be lowered. The curtains didn't quite contain all of the light so it was not completely dark. The service from the staff was great and they did a good job helping us navigate the table and the restaurant. The dining in the dark was a unique experience, but unless the quality of the food goes up, the experience itself doesn't warrant the price. I could have had a nice meal at a nice restaurant for what we paid.

It was very cool to experience total darkness, but the experience of trying to eat in it was kind of difficult and a little frustrating at times. The food was solidly mediocre, so nothing to remark on there. The biggest thing that got me was the price. For the amount you pay ($99 prix fixe per person), I would have expected something more memorable.

I'd recommend treating yourself to a really nice dinner somewhere else, then go experience total darkness a different time.

Dining in the dark was a unique experience that I will never forget. I don't think it is something I need to do all the time, however it is something you should do at least once. Our server was fantastic and very patient. I enjoyed the food too.

Pluses:
Very special evening. We felt welcomed and our server Rosie was exceptional.
Great ambiance, unique experience.

We did not like the wine (our group had 3 different ones)
During our desert a larger group of people came with children and they were very noisy!

This is a concept more than a dining experience - dining in the dark would be very interesting if the food were meant to be eaten with hands (riddle: how do you get quinoa on your fork when you cannot see your plate?). It would be even better if the place didn't smell musty like someone's basement. Best yet would be if the food were even close to San Francisco standards.

Above average service is the only positive thing I can say about Opaque, our server really made us feel comfortable about being totally blind to our surroundings. Other than that, miserable cocktails, poor wine pairings and food akin to what was served in my college dorm (medium rare = overcooked) was what we got for our >$100/head dinner.

Do not go here - instead, cook a great meal at home and blindfold yourself and your guests and you'll have a much better experience!

Very different kind of restaurant with a hidden meaning. I enjoyed it very much. The food was amazing; great texture and wonderful taste. The setting is very classy despite dining in the dark. The restaurant operates with a high level of customer service. This is a great place if you want to get away from the fast paced technologically consumed world and develop your social skills while engaging in a warm conversation with a close friend or romantic partner. Great unique place. I would recommend this to anyone, a genuine culture shock.

People will complain about the food quality at Opaque is like watching a perfect game in baseball and complaining about a lack of offense.

They just don't get it.

Opaque is about so much more than food quality. You are eating in total darkness, being served by visually impaired or totally blind waiters is an experience you should not miss. You are thrown into the world of the blind and for everyone in our party (and this is definitely best experienced with a group) it was confusing, exhilarating and educational all at the same time.

There is a limited menu to choose from the food quality is quite good including a delicious tuna tartare that I would recommend to anyone. The salmon was raved about and the beef tenderloin was so good my wife are it with her hands! Or possibly because she couldn't figure out how to cut her meat in complete darkness!!! My "mystery meat" (which I correctly identified in the dark) wasn't the best I've ever eaten but it was still quite good. Dessert was probably overlooked because we had the most trouble eating that in the complete darkness. Ice cream isn't exactly a firm item to lock onto when you can't see it but the cake was superb.

I highly recommend this restaurant for many different reasons. Go for the experience, the awesome service then and be pleasantly surprised the food. If you go there wanting to be critical of the food you will find plenty to complain about but miss out on a wonderful evening's education and experience.

This dining experience is like nothing you have ever done before. Dining is in complete darkness, from the moment your (in our case blind) server leads you through the black-out curtains to your table until you re-emerge into the light. They have you wash your hands first as you will certainly need to guide your food onto your fork with your fingers. We found ourselves eating very messily but with relish (as no one could see us anyway). Our server Rosie was solicitous and soft-spoken, reassuring and omni-present. Her voice just seemed to materialize out of the dark. The food was wonderful and mysterious as we tried to guess at its contents, etc. It's really a wonderful experience. You should go!
