Whether you head to the aforementioned bar, or past 19th-century carriage seats and into the brocade dining room, all roads lead to vodka. Available in a carafe, a cocktail or the spiked fisherman's soup (next-level comfort food).
The rest of the menu comes courtesy of the city's only operational Russian pechka, a wood-burning furnace that would have once been used to heat a czar's castle. Now, it'll heat your quail on a stick.
And while you wait between courses of pike caviar and pork belly pâté, you'll read Pushkin, his sketches and passages from secret journals have been etched around the restaurant in goose feather quill.
Club atmosphere but good food.
Had a great time celebrating my birthday at Onegin (several years in the row :)).. Love how you can first get dinner, and then the place turns into a club! The waiters were really nice, and the music was great!! Go-to place for a birthday celebration for sure 😊
Good food and atmosphere. Definitely on the pricier side so I would save it for a special occasion.
Reserved a table. Reservation was confirmed by email. Got to the restaurant and it was closed.
The vibe is very much like a night club with low lighting and music playing as you enter. The greeter has a hard time finding our open table reservation but once that was figured out things went very well. The food was very good overall and the menu had good variety. The chicken and port dumplings were excellent as was the stroganoff. I’d recommend the horseradish infused vodka. A bit pricey but it was very tasty.
Place was closed by health department. End of review.
We made a reservation through open table the day off. We arrived at the restaurant and lights were off with signs that said it was closed. It's disappointing that open table didn't know and allowed us to make a reservation. Also disappointing that we didn't get to experience the restaurant before it closed. I'd heard really good things and was looking forward to trying it!
Food was OK. Service was terrible. Do not recommend.
I like the atmosphere of this restaurant and enjoy the food. I always look forward to going back.
The menu on the web was inviting with a 4 course meal for $40, but when we came there, we were informed that the offer was no longer available and they didn’t want to make an exception since they actually promoted it on their own web page.
It was disappointing to say the least.
Great food and nice atmosphere. I was visiting from Detroit. I liked decor.food is amazing.
We made a reservation at this restaurant, hoping to use a Groupon deal. But the restaurant was closed and shuttered when we got there. We find it amazing that neither OpenTable nor Groupon was informed that the place was closed.
When my husband and I were running five minutes late for our reservation I called the restaurant to let them know. They told me that they did not see a reservation for me. When we arrived I showed them the reservation and we were seated with her friends. As our friends are Russian we let them order. The Russian food was good (in my non-Russian opinion) but the fish entrees were just okay. The service was a bit spotty and filled with attitude but I knew this going in. I’m glad I went as it was nice to have authentic Russian food with my Russian friends but I would not go back based on the service.
Come here every time while visiting New York City . The food is amazing. The infused vodka shots taste so good, you’ll want to try them all. Very friendly staff and great service.
Did not honor the reservation. Was told by hostes it would be $200 minimum to sit at the table.
Had to eat standing up at the bar.
Great food and atmosphere! Very friendly staff. This place has a very unique design, siting poetry. We will definitely come back.
I made reservations for this restaurant for 3 times, got cancelled 3 times in very last minute, for my last reservation, they didn't even bother to send a cancellation email to me, we went to restaurant that day, and found the restaurant didn't open for business in their regular opening hours without any notification on their door.
It was kind of weird to have a reservation for a birthday dinner, arrive on time and realize that the restaurant doesn’t work. So dissatisfied
A great restaurant.
Borscht and fish soup were excellent, veal stew was tasty, beef stroganoff had almost too much meat, and tons of sauce that was much too rich I couldn't eat too much of it. Mashed potatoes accompanying it were good. We were served white bread but when we asked for brown, we were served it. Our pinot grigios were fine. In the past I have had the chicken Kiev, and when I come back, I will order that.
Food was served at a good pace, waiter was very nice.
The birch Martini was stunning and the foie gras the best I've ever had. The charcuterie platter is very generous so be warned. The berries and cream dessert was exceptionally good! We also loved the fabulous canopied chairs close to the bar that gave a sense of fun and privacy. The service was equally lovely and the recommendations were spot on.
A bit on the pricey side, but a great experience! Delicious Russian/European food and desserts, with a menu that features both variety and quality. Truly unique cocktails. Pleasant atmosphere and very friendly staff. If you're looking for a stylish place to meet with friends downtown, look no further. (Also very easy to find, literally across the street from the W 4th St. subway stop!)
Good food but very overpriced. The service was slow, we had to remind the waiter several times about the item he forgot to bring.
Disappointed!!! Poor service, mediocre food, cheap decor
outstanding service, quality food, served hot, great decor.
The place was empty, so it is hard to comment on sound levels. And also service, which was attentive but there wasn't much to deal with otherwise. We stuck to Russian dishes (the bulk are completely non-Russian, despite the name) and they were good, well-prepared and tasty. The one negative is the wine list, staggeringly pricey, even for the lowest grade. The mark up must be 500% ! Worth a visit but stick to the tea.
The menu has changed (for the worse) and the food quality has deteriorated over time. This used to be a great Russian restaurant, but there are many better options in the city.
Honestly the best meal I've had in a long time. Great theme, great service, fabulous meal with great dessert. Started us off with a surprise shot for the table, ended with delicious dessert and coffee. The appetizers were great, the bread was fresh, portions were just the right size and well flavored, not standard or under seasoned. Everything was cooked just right. Would definitely recommend.
We had a fun dinner at Onegin. We only order appetizers to share: Dumplings, salmon roe with blinis, potato pancakes with shredded duck and herring. All very good. The birch martini cocktail was very interesting. Worth a return visit. Casual atmosphere, so fun for a night out with friends.
This guys need to learn the cuisine which they serve.
Very good authentic food. Would return again.
Place was somewhat empty for a Friday evening around 7:00 but it filled in soon after. Food was excellent, including an outstanding Stroganoff, salad, pate and salmon roe blini. Decor is Old World funky and cool. Service was very good. Would go back.
Food was good as was the service, was unaware that there would be a work party so there was a DJ and it was quite loud. Overall still an enjoyable experience.
I was surprising some family and unfortunately we were not notified that there was a private party during our reserved time. We were seated in the bar/lounge which took away the enjoyment Onegin’s dinning room is known for. Great service and nice people. Will try again
Either they need to update their business hours or have the decency to call when cancelling a reservation. My boyfriend and I had a reservation for a Monday evening and nowhere on the website or OpenTable did it say it would be closed. Thanks for nothing.
The menu has been significantly reduced making it a somewhat less interesting place to go drink and nibble. I still like the horseradish flavored vodka. If you go for early cocktails the place is really quiet and pleasant to sit around and talk in.
Pretty heavy Russian menu - potato, rich sauce - so just be aware. Interesting ambiance. An attempt at a old world feel. Located in a great neighborhood. Easy access to the Village, LES. the infused vodka shots are worth a try. Would recommend getting a Groupon, to check it out with first.
Honest Russian cuisine with Ukrainian and Georgian touches. Same you can find on Arbat Street in Moscow. Good selection of authentic vodkas.
Onegin has a great menu even for a LivingSocial deal, which we used. The food was tasty, particularly the blinis and meat pierogi. Staff was friendly enough.
Onegin offers takeout which you can order by calling the restaurant at (212) 924-8001.
