About Onegin

Onegin is where you'll go when your usual palace just isn't opulent, caviar-y or crazy enough. You'll find smoked sturgeon by crystal-chandelier light. House-infused honey-pepper vodka from a bar made of 200-year-old Ukrainian birch. And borscht. Delivered to your red velvet throne by butler-jacket-wearing waiters.

Whether you head to the aforementioned bar, or past 19th-century carriage seats and into the brocade dining room, all roads lead to vodka. Available in a carafe, a cocktail or the spiked fisherman's soup (next-level comfort food).

The rest of the menu comes courtesy of the city's only operational Russian pechka, a wood-burning furnace that would have once been used to heat a czar's castle. Now, it'll heat your quail on a stick.

And while you wait between courses of pike caviar and pork belly pâté, you'll read Pushkin, his sketches and passages from secret journals have been etched around the restaurant in goose feather quill.

I was surprising some family and unfortunately we were not notified that there was a private party during our reserved time. We were seated in the bar/lounge which took away the enjoyment Onegin’s dinning room is known for. Great service and nice people. Will try again

Either they need to update their business hours or have the decency to call when cancelling a reservation. My boyfriend and I had a reservation for a Monday evening and nowhere on the website or OpenTable did it say it would be closed. Thanks for nothing.

The menu has been significantly reduced making it a somewhat less interesting place to go drink and nibble. I still like the horseradish flavored vodka. If you go for early cocktails the place is really quiet and pleasant to sit around and talk in.

Pretty heavy Russian menu - potato, rich sauce - so just be aware. Interesting ambiance. An attempt at a old world feel. Located in a great neighborhood. Easy access to the Village, LES. the infused vodka shots are worth a try. Would recommend getting a Groupon, to check it out with first.

Honest Russian cuisine with Ukrainian and Georgian touches. Same you can find on Arbat Street in Moscow. Good selection of authentic vodkas.

Onegin has a great menu even for a LivingSocial deal, which we used. The food was tasty, particularly the blinis and meat pierogi. Staff was friendly enough.

food is really bad lately, otherwise consistent...no life music or shows like they used to do. Overall, it got much worse over years.

Food was overpriced for the mediocre quality. Meats were well seasoned but generally overcooked. Service staff not particularly friendly either. It felt like they were doing us a favor.

Food was incredible, just like my mom and grandma cook. Unfortunately they didn't have the entire menu available that night so I wasn't able to try my favorite dishes. The prices are on the expensive side but the food and portions accommodated it well. We had the Groupon deal which made this a good bargain.

We checked them out online first and decided it could be a great place for lunch . When we came lunch menu wasn't there at all and many items from the dinner menu were not available either. I'm sorry we didn't leave at once.

Great place with a romantic Russian vibe. The noise level is very decent for a place in central Manhattan. Warmly recommended for a romantic dinner or to have a good evening out among friends.

Our waiter was amazing! If it weren't for him I would probably have rated this bad instead of fair. Actually the service in general was very good! It looks like it is going through a transition of ownership or management maybe? The waiters and hostess were dressed smartly, but the other woman (bartender maybe) was completely inappropriately dressed. The arrangement of the seating was bizarre as well. When we first walked in I thought we were underdressed, but then we sat down and could hear the obnoxious couple at the bar throughout our whole dinner. For a Russian restaurant, there were very few Russian offerings on the menu. The Borscht was good, but salty. The salad came out with very old and salty feta, a bizarre cilantro-esque dressing, and no olives. I ordered the lamb kebabs . . . they were sausages wrapped in a philo/tortilla type thing. The best part of the main course was the french fries. The spicy plum sauce was also good and at least made the 'kebabs' less dry. The napoleon supposedly homemade was old. All the light cream had saturated the pastry, making the entire dessert stale and clunky instead of light and airy. I soooooo wanted to like this place. I'm hoping that it is just in a transition because it could really be great.

AMAZING!! IF YOU LOVE DANCING AFTER EATING A GREAT MEAL - THIS IS A PLACE FOR YOU. THE ONLY ONE THING I DID NOT LIKE WAS THE NOISE LEVEL. I CAME OUT TOTALLY DEAFENED, SO TURN THE VOLUME DOWN, GUYS. OTHER THAN THAT - A PERFECT PLACE TO SPEND FRIDAY NIGHT WITH A DATE OR FRIENDS.

Appetizers and Dinner was served at the proper temperatures. Portion sizes were appropriate, not too large. Food was prepared well. Our server was very good at attending to our needs.

Quality Russian food and nice ambiance;
We got Groupon which was an excellent deal.
Service was attentive and prompt. I got Russian staples borscht and chicken Kiev which were both excellent. They also have a variety of infused vodkas.

During the week it's usually quiet and one can easily talk, on the weekends it turns into nightclub with DJ

The groupon menu is terrific, good food at an excellent price. We keep coming back for the (salmon) caviar and crepe starter. Fantastic! I tried the vegetarian entree for the first time. It was really good. And the glass of red wine included was excellent too

Our waiter showed a lack of knowledge about the menu. He did not seem interested in helping us and misspoke about several of the food selections and drink items. His English was passable, so it wasn't a language barrier, just a lack of knowledge. Not very professional. Food was hit-and-miss for us, but maybe, could have been great with a better waiter.

Had coupon for two free five-course meals with three vodka pairings. Portions were large, good selection to choose from, and waitress/ who was also bartender, was friendly but did not offer too much information on the Russian cuisine we were having. She was good to prepare what we didn't eat in carry-out containers, so we left a really good tip. My biggest complaint is that the infused vodka, while very tasty, was not served ice cold. It was poured well in advance of being served and was tepid, at best, and mostly room temperature by the time we got it.
We would go again.

In the mail, we received an invite for a complimentary 5-course meal for 2. We couldn't believe it and our expectations were not high. Well, we were in for such a big surprise and treat. Every course was delicious and they included a vodka infused intermezzo between three of the meals. Great wine list, too. Highly recommended even if you have to pay. The prices are reasonable.

Interesting menu and plentiful portions. Food is pretty good but was really disappointed when my glass of wine had a lot sediment on the bottom, which didn't seem noteworthy to the waiter. The music gets loud a little later in the evening so be mindful if you're hoping for quiet conversation.

Was looking for a Russian restaurant in NYC, Onegin got many good reviews. It was a bit of a drive from our Midtown Manhattan location, but not bad.

It is European cafe looking inside, tiled floors, chandeliers, cafe type tables. The food had everything from fois gras to Russian potato salad, caviar, to beef ribs. We had the beef stroganoff and the lamb chops, fois gras, and the potato salad. The potato salad was- potato salad. We were told it was a Russian household meal staple, so we had to try it. Good, but just potato salad.

The fois gras was served on a pear, which was interesting. The flavor was good, especially with the fruited compote that came with it, but it did not knock our socks off.

The lamb chops had excellent flavor, one was more done than other, but they were nice. Not top shelf, but satisfying. The beef stroganoff was the best entree, the tenderloin in it was tender, and the cream sauce was the best I have had out for stroganoff. It went well with the mushrooms and meat, and was very rich.

We had a little trouble understanding our Eastern European waiter, but he was charming and we muddled through. My husband tried the Russian vodka Beluga and enjoyed it. We were disappointed when they said they had literally no Russian beer at all, had all sold out over the weekend ( this was Monday).

All in all, it was an enjoyable experience, not as haute cuisine as we expected, but worth the trip.

Horrible first impression, we did not stay to eat. The hostess first seated us at a table less than a foot apart from another group and the restaurant was near empty. Moments later the hostess came back and told us we had to move claiming the table she first seated us at was reserved. Overall the staff was not friendly and since it was an almost empty restaurant at 7:30pm on a Saturday night we did not stay for our meal.

Our waiter was most gracious and satisfied all our needs very pleasantly and efficiently. All in all it was a great introduction to Russian cuisine and an overall pleasant dining experience. I will definitely return and try other items on their menu.....

As a former Immigrant from the Soviet Union, I am well familiar with the Russian restaurant scene in NYC. Onegin does an excellent replication of a typical South Brooklyn spot in the Manhattan setting. The food and drink selection is above reproach, but don't expect to have a casual conversation after 9pm. The DJ will crank up the electro beats up to 11, and you will be blinded by the strobes (and the flash going off for Easter European ladies taking selfies in their form-hugging dresses). The Vodka Infusion selection is lovely but tends towards the sweeter side (plum, peach, berries), which makes this place excellent if you want to have a wild birthday party, but not as good if your are a connoisseur of the infusions, looking for a quiet night on the town. Come here for fun, but not for business or a date.
