One if by Land, Two if by Sea Ratings and Reviews
Food mediocre at best. Ambience would have made the experience better if we weren’t placed in an add-on room to the side of the main dining room. Service was awkward, hovering around our table continuously. The restaurant lost our umbrella and the hostess showed no hint of apology for it. Dessert was the only redeeming factor.
This was our first dining experience here and I must say I was very impressed. The ambience was unlike anything I have ever seen, amazing. The food was great. I had the signature dish known as the "Beef Wellington". The staff here is very nice and friendly.
If you want to have stomach pain you should come here . The food tastes so bad, the presentation and taste disgusting. I was can’t believe it it’s was over priced and everything what we ordered with my friend it’s was hard to eat. Even we was so hungry. I was can’t wait to leave this place. And interior on photo much better than in real life.
What a special place! From the welcome warmth of the front room fireplace to the cozy dining* area with it’s windows on the lighted gardens, you can feel the history (Aaron Burr, smuggling tunnels, underground railroad, fire-horses and harlots) and enjoy the impeccable service of fabulous food. Try the Norwegian salmon or the rack of lamb, and the freshest beau soleil oysters. Truly a great romantic restaurant (yes, they had a single tapered candle) and well worth the price.
After having to negotiate a table I was told would be accommodated a week in advance, my beef Wellington was sadly inedible . I was there for my girlfriends birthday who really wasn’t made to feel special at any point with any kind of dessert or candle. I had to specifically ask for it after our meal was complete. Sad because place is beautiful but way over priced for quality of food and service.
We went to celebrate our 31st anniversary. Perfect for a romantic dinner. Atmosphere, lighting, service- all were perfect. Prix fixe menu had great variety and food was presented beautifully. Everything from appetizers to desserts was fresh and delicious. The chocolate soufflé was sublime. We loved the personal service and macaroons with anniversary wishes at the end of dinner. Also loved the piano music.
The food was ok but not over the top good. It was our 30th wedding anniversary and we flew in from Houston to have dinner. The waitress was nice but did not make recommendations and talked me out of the lamb chop. She recommended the beef Wellington, but it was over cooked. (Medium well) when I ordered medium rare.
Honestly, I'm quite disappointed with this place. With the amount that I spent, I should have went to five guys down the block and order the whole menu there instead. I don't usually leave bad reviews but, for a place like this, I had higher expectations. I was excited to try the beef wellington after reading many positive reviews about how "amazing" it was and it was way below my standards. I asked for a "medium rare" steak as I do with all my steaks and I got a rare steak. The steak was completely red on the inside and it was just lightly seared on the outside. The waiter had the audacity to tell me that it's medium rare, as if I've never had a medium rare steak before. At least he was kind enough to offer to have another beef wellington done right for me. The second plate brought to me had the beef wellington, along with an old slice of steak I had cut from the old plate (nice plating, don't you think? Did they honestly thing I'd would eat the old slice of steak I had previously cut?). I cut the beef wellington in half only to find that it was the same as before, rare. I just told the waiter to forget about it because, after all, this dinner was for my boyfriend's birthday and he was waiting for me to eat until I get my plate while his food was getting cold. I begrudgingly accepted the rare steak. The funny thing is, the waiter offered to change the plate for me again but this time, it seemed like he had a bit of attitude with his body language; his posture/stance and his tone when he spoke to me. I didn't want to cause too much drama so I let it slide because I wanted my boyfriend to have a good time and enjoy dinner. Overall, we would not even consider coming back to try this mediocre food.
We went here for my husband's birthday because it was touted as the 5th most romantic restaurant in the world. It certainly lived up to the reputation. We loved the ambiance, soft piano music and romantic candlelight with roses at every table. The food was similarly phenomenal. My husband loved the cote de bouef steak and said it was the best steak he'd ever had. Everything was beautifully prepared with great flavors. The best part was how attentive the staff were. We arrived late due to some traffic and had to be at the theatre by 8 pm, we notified the waiter and they took great care to make sure we were able to finish our meal with time to spare, without sacrificing quality or feeling rushed. It was perfect. Would definitely come here again!
On top of the history behind the building, it really is very romantic! The octopus appetizer was the most tender; it just melted in your mouth! I am not a big meat eater but the beef wellington was out of this world. Looking forward to going back! Great service and wine list!
We visited for the NYE dinner and were told there would be a vegetarian version of the tasting menu available - but this was just removing the meat from a few dishes and adding a pasta. For the price and reputation of the place, I definitely expected better. The food was good but not great. The first round of bread that came out was not warm at all (I only realized it was supposed to be warm and soft when they brought more bread for the table, which was great). They mixed up the order for the first course and after that it was smooth. Salad was strangely large, pasta was fine, saffron risotto (minus lobster for me) was not good, chocolate dessert was delicious. Our server, Orchid, was lovely. Very attentive and gave us a taste of her favorite cocktail and overall improved the new year eve dining experience considerably. She also bartends so I would go back to have a drink at the bar but definitely can't recommend for dinner. I did love the ambiance of the place, beautifully decorated and very romantic.
My husband and I came here for our wedding anniversary. I had called ahead to request that a “happy anniversary” message be written on our dessert plates as a surprise. I was assured that it wouldn’t be a problem. Unfortunately, our dessert plates came with no message. I was very disappointed. Very poor execution from a high end restaurant such as this.
On top of that, the food was nothing special and didn’t blow us away. The only thing that stood out was the chocolate soufflé. That was delicious.
Overall, ambiance was very romantic but was disappointed with food, service and execution from such a high end restaurant. If I’m going to pay these prices, I will choose a better option.
