One if by Land, Two if by Sea Ratings and Reviews
Amazing evening! We live in NYC and I am a huge history buff but had never heard of this restaurant. I’m not sure how that is possible but I can’t thank my friend enough for suggesting we have a special Christmas dinner here. The entire night exceeded our expectations starting from arriving early to have an incredible cocktail by the fireplace in the cozy leather club chairs to the beautiful table by the window with the single white taper lit upon our arrival. We were also seated near the gorgeous Christmas tree which made the ambience incredibly romantic. I had the beet salad appetizer which was delicious and of course we had to have the beef Wellington. We also had a bottle of red wine recommended by our waiter which was perfectly paired with our meal and not overly expensive. The service was very attentive but not hovering. The evening was truly magical. PS. This is as good as any Michelin star restaurant!! But without the price!
Menu HAS 2 Options 3 or 7 course. When we ordered most of the options were not available. When you have an EXTREMELY limited menu, you can not tell your customer you are out of
several of the individual options for appetizers AND Main course. I should have walked out but at that point I had no reservations elsewhere.
This by far one of the finest we've ever had the pleasure of visiting and we've been to restaurants all over the world. The combination of exquisite food, lovely ambiance. warm and competent staff and the setting is world class. Be prepared to be thrilled with the experience.
It definitely lives up to being one of the most romantic restaurants in the world. We had a fantastic table right in front of the Christmas tree, a perfect setting for Saturday date night. Our server was able to recommend some great dishes from the menu and the service was excellent. Definitely worth the money.
Amazing food, great service and super romantic. My husband and I got engaged here 29 years ago, and just had a wonderful meal here. The restaurant is so pretty with the lighted Christmas tree and the lights in the courtyard. The falling snow just added to the ambience. The staff was very attentive and had good recommendations. It's really a special place!
Me and my husband came to this test to celebrate his birthday. I explained to the waiter that I’m pregnant therefore I have some dietary restrictions, asked for his pregnancy appropriate recommendations. He explained that almost everything on the menu can be cooked well done so I ordered the beef Wellington. When my dish came the pastry was completely burnt. The waiter explained that in order to get the meet well done they had to cook it this way. I would rather if he had told me that this specific dish is not recommended well done, I would have gladly picked something else and the chef wouldn’t have looked so bad. There were plenty other options. Also we were both a bit disappointed with the bread that they serve, for this type of place I wouldn’t have expected a bland supermarket type of ban bread, I would expect something warm and fresh. Other than that the ambient and decorations was excellent.
Beautiful restaurant full of charm and history. The lighting, XMas decorations and roaring fire were outstanding. Unfortunately, the food is sub par. Nothing that we ate in the pre fixed menu was worthy. Service was good but I should have known I was in for a long night of just average food when waiter could not personally recommend any dish because chef doesn’t let him try the food! Yikes. If they can correct their cooking issue this would be one of NYC’s best dining experiences.
I was extremely disappointed. The service was horrible and the food was mediocre. I was celebrating my wife birthday and they literally rushed us out. We had 8:00 reservations and we were done eating by 8:45. Yes it’s a romantic scene but the service was extremely cold. They would not see me ever again.
This was my first visit to the restaurant. It was recommended by a friend. The experience lived up to the recommendation as to food quality and ambiance. That it was the beginning of the Christmas Season only added to the setting and ambiance. However the pace of service was a little quick and a few minutes should allowed in between each do that the food and drink may be totally enjoyed.
We did the 7 course chef’s tasting with wine paring. The early courses are absurdly small, the “scallop” course is a thin trimming off the top of a full size scallop, the foie gras and tuna are each only slightly larger than the size of a quarter. The whole experience is woefully underwhelming given the price point, I’d suggest just ordering the three course or looking elsewhere for a great meal.
Being an obsessed Hamilton fan, who slept on the sidewalk of 46th street with my then 15 year old daughter in July 2016, to get cancellationline tickets 3 days before the original cast left, when a friend posted a link to One if by Land, Two if By Sea on my Facebook, I knew I absolutely must make it back to NYC from Atlanta, GA and dine there ASAP! That opportunity happened to come much quicker than I expected. I made reservations, then found out that my cousin and BFF, who I was to be traveling with, was treating us to Hamilton tickets the day after we would be eating at Aaron Burr’s famous carriage house turned restaurant, making our upcoming trip even more special! We could not have asked for anything better. The food was outstanding, as was the service. It was cozy and beautiful-all decorated for Christmas. We had the best dining experience of our lives. I hope that we have the chance to visit again. I would love to take my Hamilton-obsessed children. One if by Land, Two if By Sea will go down as my very favorite dining experience-ever. Hands down, it was everything wonderful. Thank you for making our trip so amazing.
Amazing atmosphere, classical dishes and wonderful service for our engagement celebration, with really nice touches including champagne on the house, "congratulations" dessert and a picture perfect table by the garden window. Made my fiancee and I very happy!
Our dining experience was mixed.
My appetizer, scallops, was superb. The waiter strongly encouraged the Beef Wellington as the signature dish and we all ordered it. This was very disappointing. And while mine was ordered as medium rare, it was well done. I was first told it was as it was meant to be but after a second complaint it was replaced with a rarer version that was still not very good.
The service was fair, and the atmosphere is beautiful.
Blonde girl on front desk was really rude which didn’t give us the best first impression. She certainly didn’t welcome us warmly and told us to sit at the bar for a few minutes. 20 mins later we asked her if our table was ready and she muttered something inaudible with a blank expression and spoke to her manager who told us our table had been ready for a while(?!)
Thankfully, service at the table was excellent and manager who seated us let us choose our seats and came back halfway through our meal to check we were happy.
Food was interesting - I had the beet salad which was nothing special and not very well presented on the plate then the beef wellington which had an overpowering raspberry sauce which wasn’t pleasant. I asked for medium rare yet the beef was definitely well done.
I’ve eaten at far cheaper restaurants with far better food. Bill came to $232 for two of us.
On a positive note, the Christmas tree and live pianist made the atmosphere very romantic.
