We went here for my husband's birthday because it was touted as the 5th most romantic restaurant in the world. It certainly lived up to the reputation. We loved the ambiance, soft piano music and romantic candlelight with roses at every table. The food was similarly phenomenal. My husband loved the cote de bouef steak and said it was the best steak he'd ever had. Everything was beautifully prepared with great flavors. The best part was how attentive the staff were. We arrived late due to some traffic and had to be at the theatre by 8 pm, we notified the waiter and they took great care to make sure we were able to finish our meal with time to spare, without sacrificing quality or feeling rushed. It was perfect. Would definitely come here again!
On top of the history behind the building, it really is very romantic! The octopus appetizer was the most tender; it just melted in your mouth! I am not a big meat eater but the beef wellington was out of this world. Looking forward to going back! Great service and wine list!
We visited for the NYE dinner and were told there would be a vegetarian version of the tasting menu available - but this was just removing the meat from a few dishes and adding a pasta. For the price and reputation of the place, I definitely expected better. The food was good but not great. The first round of bread that came out was not warm at all (I only realized it was supposed to be warm and soft when they brought more bread for the table, which was great). They mixed up the order for the first course and after that it was smooth. Salad was strangely large, pasta was fine, saffron risotto (minus lobster for me) was not good, chocolate dessert was delicious. Our server, Orchid, was lovely. Very attentive and gave us a taste of her favorite cocktail and overall improved the new year eve dining experience considerably. She also bartends so I would go back to have a drink at the bar but definitely can't recommend for dinner. I did love the ambiance of the place, beautifully decorated and very romantic.
My husband and I came here for our wedding anniversary. I had called ahead to request that a “happy anniversary” message be written on our dessert plates as a surprise. I was assured that it wouldn’t be a problem. Unfortunately, our dessert plates came with no message. I was very disappointed. Very poor execution from a high end restaurant such as this.
On top of that, the food was nothing special and didn’t blow us away. The only thing that stood out was the chocolate soufflé. That was delicious.
Overall, ambiance was very romantic but was disappointed with food, service and execution from such a high end restaurant. If I’m going to pay these prices, I will choose a better option.
Delicious but not ideal if you are vegetarian! I called to make sure that there would be good vegetarian/dairy-free options and though they said the chef would be happy to accommodate, they did not have a vegetarian menu and “working” with me meant removing half the ingredients. However, due to their mistake they offered us some free wine and we were able to find options that worked for me. Overall, very romantic atmosphere and the service was good, though a tad slow, it added to the romanticism.
We were very thrilled with the overall atmosphere. My roommate and I are very enthusiastic American history buffs and very much enjoyed being in a place that dated back to the revolutionary war and then some. We will for sure keep this in our places to be list in the future!
This is my second time visiting this restaurant. My first time was for my girlfriend’s birthday and recently to ask her to marry me. I Love the ambience, romantic setting,the candles, lights. Jessica our waiter did an amazing job and even recorded me going down on one knee. I’ll be celebrating our engagement there at least once a year. Thank you guys so much.
This is the most romantic restaurant in NYC. We have had Christmas dinner at this restaurant in the past 10 years or so. It's a historical place, very authentic, great ambiance, and the quality of food has improved in recent years. Beef Wellington is the signature dish here, but there are many other selections. Highly recommended for special occasions for a couple and a family.
It is always easiest to form a great initial impression of a restaurant when the staff is as warm and friendly as that of One If By Land. That impression was only enhanced by the quality of the food. We were very glad we dined there and recommend it highly.
I said that the scenic view would also apply to the restaurant only because of its Christmas theme, its one of the best places in NYC . Its also nice during the year but really special during the holidays. Cant say anything negative, food, service and comfort all worth while.
Our first experience at one if by land was the Christmas dinner menu. Most of the dinner was very good with a few exceptions. First the good....soup, duck, and beef Wellington all got rave reviews. The chocolate ganache dessert was also excellent.
Disappointments ...the octopus was so chewy it was almost inedible. The risotto that came with the lobster was flavorless, like it was boiled in water with zero seasoning or salt. The meringue dessert didn’t dazzle either.
The atmosphere can’t be beat. I feel like I need to try it one more time on a non holiday weekend to really judge. For the price point you expect something exceptional. Dinner for four , one moderate bottle of wine was $810.
This restaurant never disappoints; from Maria’s warm welcome, to the beautiful romantic decor, the classical and perfectly prepared food, the extensive wine list, everything is close to perfection. I cannot think of a better place in New York to have a romantic dinner, or a small gathering of good friends.
This restaurant definitely lives up to its reputation as one of the most romantic restaurants in the World! My husband & I had a lovely pre-holiday dinner here and enjoyed every fabulous minute of our experience. I made the rez on Opentable a couple weeks prior. I arrived a bit early and had a martini at their beautiful bar. The venue literally brings you back to old New York as it is an old carriage house built in 1767 owned by Aaron Burr. It has high ceilings, dark woods, white table cloths, exposed brick, etc. We were seated up in the mezzanine area which has a small window that overlooks the main dining room & bar below. There is also a large piano & woodburning fireplace. Our server was professional & pleasant, our drinks were great, & our food was divine. It has taken me years to finally dine here and I definitely won't wait that long to go back. I would love to make this our special date night go to restaurant. I HIGHLY recommend dining here & you won't be disappointed!!!
Been here many times. It’s beautiful and whenever we are in town we try and go. Last night was an exception. Service was poor. Many mistakes by the waiter. None of us finished our main courses. We felt like either they are buying their food from a lower cost purveyor or the chefs were off their game. Maybe both. So sad.
The staff was very friendly, attentive and professional. The place itself is very nice and quaint. Perfect for a special occasion. Decorated beautifully for Christmas! The food was GREAT. We had the oysters which were excellent. The beef Wellington and scallops was excellent. The New Zealand Venison was delicious, along with the rabbit schnitzel as an appetizer. You will not be disappointed with this restaurant. High priced, but you get what you pay for.
