My wife and I chose this restaurant since it was our twenty seventh wedding anniversary and we had eaten at the restaurant many years earlier, we thought this would be an excellent choice. We ordered the seven course tasting menu and wine pairings which every dish was well executed (except for the halibut which was served very dry)and the wine was a fantastic complement. The ambiance was a bit lacking since the restaurant promotes itself as one of the top five romantic restaurants in the world. Our reservation was for 8:00PM and tables were spaced too closely together and the restaurant was crowded. That said the restaurant was decorated beautifully for the holidays and there were roses on every table. All in all the food, wine and service were well executed but the tables were to close together and the noise level high the restaurant did not deliver as one of the most romantic in the world.
Great ambiance and service, food excellent and really enjoyed our first visit there. We recognize NYC is pricey but this just seemed a little on the higher side of what we expected. Nevertheless, we enjoyed it and would go again.
Having traveled to multiple countries over my career I can easily say this is the most romantic restaraunt you will find.
Well worth the price. Food was amazing, service was even better. Definitely recommend
Not sure the price matches what you get in return.
Wonderful food, service and beautiful ambience. Picture perfect.
The food was delicious. All classics that are executed well, but nothing that blew my socks off. And for a USD 500.00+ dinner, I was kind of expecting that… Regardless, service was wonderful, as well as the food, and the ambiance very intimate. A delightful experience.
The four of us were fortunate to have a 5:30 seating. This meant an abundance of service and attention to detail from the staff...especially the extraordinary Jorge who seemed to be everywhere all at once and played multiple roles as server and maitre de. We were seated right by the Christmas Tree, centerstage. Although there was swift movement around our round table, there was little notice.
The food was the best. The tuna tartar was out of this world and the best value (along with the scallops) on the appetizer menu. Have a festive cocktail! At $20, they are pricey but well worth it. And speaking of worth it, do not leave without having the signature Beef Wellington dish. This will make up for any petite portions you have had at this point.
For dessert, there are 7 choices! I sampled the Cappuccino and the Chocolate Souffle, both divine. The actual cappuccino coffee was "eh," so a house coffee (if they offer that) will fix your coffee fix.
I had one awkward moment when I found something in my green beans that shouldn't have been there...or anywhere near food. Jorge handled this delicately and refreshed my plate immediately. These things happen, but it was the one out-of-character event of the evening.
By the time we were leaving at 7:30, this place was jamming (oh, did I mention the beautiful bar area with loungy pianist?!), so I would recommend an early seating or something in the back alcove (or by the window) if you would like a quieter, romantic evening.
It's filled with old-school elegance and tradition while still being fun and romantic. They lit a single tall candle at our table as we were seated. A delightful touch.
The bartender was exquisite a lot of product knowledge very patient to explain the different drinks to meet a true professional. And the waitress that I had a spectacular really knew her stuff friendly good personalityOverall very good experience
Great romantic vibe. Great for a special occasion. Service was excellent.
One if by Land and Two if by Sea is now is my wife’s and my favorite restaurant. Cheers to Ethan and Jessica for making us feel like family. Fun stories and excellent suggestions on the dining experience make this place a standout in New York. We will definitely be returning on our next trip to New York in 2022.
always a lovely evening in NYC. I wish however that they offered an a la carte menu. bar is terrific as was our bartender that evening.
Great experience. Not a very attentive wait staff. Lobster course was very disappointing but everything else was great.
Highly Recommend! Tasting menu was outstanding. Ambiance was next level
Amazing service. Incredible foods. The atmosphere was perfect. Great romantic spot.
Outstanding venue for a romantic night, lovely ambience and food was exceptional
Had a wonderful birthday with my friends
My wife and I have been coming to this restaurant for 45 years. Our first visit was in the summer of 1976, we have visited roughly 15 times, and we chose to spend our 40th wedding anniversary there. We made the restaurant aware of this in a low-key manner (as a comment on our OpenTable reservation).
The food was good, but every other aspect of our visit was disappointing. Despite a reservation that was early in the evening and made weeks in advance, we were seated at a table that was one of the worst in the house. We sat for 10 minutes at our table before anyone asked if we wanted a drink, brought menus, or had any interaction whatsoever. The service was totally disengaged—joyless and pro forma. Individual glasses of wine were brought to our table already poured. No tastes were offered, and we never even saw the bottles. The plating of my beef Wellington was the beef itself with minimal saucing and four green beans. Four.
One of the staff came to my table to ask if he could clear our plates while I was still eating my main course. To “celebrate” our 40th anniversary, we were comped a tiny cookie and one small jelly each with no comment. Why bother? It was a sad ending to a bad night on what should have been a happy occasion.
My daughter and son-in-law had been to this restaurant a few weeks earlier with a similar report. But my wife and I chose to go anyway because we thought we knew better. We didn’t. At this price point, there are literally dozens if not 100 or more better choices in New York City.
This restaurant is simply spectacular. The ambiance, the history, the wait staff, the food…absolutely perfect. Come here for a romantic date or special occasion and you will not be disappointed!
The Waiter is rude and will never come again ………..
Incredible Thanksgiving meal. Ambience was brilliant, staff were lovely, wish I lived in New York so that I could come here regularly
Everything was festive, warm and inviting, with courteous, good service. The cocktails were creative and first rate. The portions of food were surprisingly small (although the prices were large), and the actual cooking was very good, but one hoped to use words like “superb” and “delicious” and those adjectives did not come up. I’d return, but my expectations will be slightly lower. Still a good Thanksgiving evening.
The food was amazing, the service absolutely wonderful and the ambience to die for. Truly one of the best experiences I've ever had.
The staff and food are exceptional, especially our server Orchid.
We went for our anniversary. The staff was attentive, the food delicious, and the ambiance warm and intimate. We’d definitely come back.
Always a wonderful experience. Food, ambiance, and service are top notch
We celebrated our 25th anniversary at the restaurant. Was a wonderful experience with amazing service. Food was impeccable as well.
It’s romantic in a way most places just aren’t anymore.
Service was pretty good.
Food was subpar for the price point.
My Wellington was far beyond medium and my foie gras had a springy vein running thru it.
The dessert and the dessert options honestly felt like the bare minimum.
It’s time they invest in a consultant to improve the menu or tighten up the kitchen team.
Awesome experience. Great atmosphere. Awesome food. We had the Beef Wellington and it was crazy good.
We were totally disappointed. Got the 7 course dinner for four The scallops were not up to standards and the Beef Wellington, which is their signature dish, came almost well done when we had all ordered medium. The Halibut was overcooked. It is obvious that the kitchen is doing a mass production operation and is not taking the care required for this kind of a restaurant. In sum, we felt like we had gone to a tourist trap with a beautiful ambiance.
Celebrated engagement dinner here. Service was great, they respected my reservation request for a window seat. Ambience was excellent and food was very good.
Great service, beautiful rooms, light, but flavorful and satisfying food.
When we reserved the table, we asked for a table by the window on the first floor. When they called me to confirm the reservation in the morning, they said we’ll get that. But when we got there, we didn’t get what we wanted. There was a table by the window, but they didn’t give that to us. Their service is horrible. Food is just okay. I personally don’t recommend to go their for anniversary.
We celebrated my wife’s birthday here and had an exceptional time. Staff was super attentive. Would definitely recommend for a special night out.
The Halibut and Beef Wellington were the highlights of the tasting menu. The chocolate soufflé was an average end to an otherwise spectacular experience.
Good place to eat different.
Seven courses is the best option.
Been in similar type of restaurant I was expecting for a presentation of each course (details, inspiration, ingredients, etc.
Overall, very good.
That Restaurant has a wonderful tasting menu with a excellent Price / Value relationship.
Initially, they said, the tasting menu is not available - however, after insisting, it was served. That was greatly appreciated!
Expectations were high of this “romantic “ place. Pretty disappointed.
Noisy, cramped space, mediocre food, foie gras was served cold - yak.
Service is okay but very limited. Staff seemed overwhelmed possibly due to lack of servers and busboys. Bartenders seemed stressed out and unfriendly. If you don’t specify a location of the table at the time of reservation you may end up sitting next to the stairs ( literally you can lean on it).
Will I come back - no. Would I recommend to anyone - no.
Wonderful experience! Delicious food and great atmosphere. Highly recommend the tasting menu.
Wow. Just WOW!
There is a reason this place is rated one of the very best in all of NYC. We wanted a romantic evening, with amazing food and service to celebrate our anniversary, and we were overwhelmed with the entire evening.
Our server Orchid (We asked for her name), could not have been any better. A true professional who provided us with attentive, but not intrusive service. Absolutely deserves to be recognized for outstanding service. We opted for the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairing. Each dish was perfectly portioned and paired to perfection. Some claimed to have left hungry, but we were very satisfied by the end of the evening. Each dish seemed to be better than the last, I truly can't say one was better than the other without listing the entire menu. This evening for us was scheduled to be an intimate evening to celebrate our anniversary in class, and we were 100% happy with our experience.
For those out of towners like us, here are some tips. The restaurant is not clearly marked from the outside. It's directly next to the Ale House. We took the subway and it was a 2 minute walk from the Christopher St station. We felt very safe and its in a pretty busy part of town. They do require and verify your vaccination status prior to dining. If the price of an evening is a concern, this probably isn't the place you should look to dine. But I will say, even though this was my wife and I's most expensive dinner outside of our wedding day, I did not feel it was outrageous. Go into the evening knowing you will be treated with class and an impeccable evening. Lastly, ask for an extra piece of bread to soak up every last bit of goodness from the dish being served :)
