On the Verandah is one of the top restaurants in Highlands. They have a creative menu they execute well, great ambiance, and a very broad and deep wine list that is very fairly priced. While most other fine dining restaurants in Highlands have "resort prices" OTV has "normal" pricing and the wine list is even a tad under-priced. I highly recommend it.

Again, a great meal here. We try to visit each time we are in Highlands. I'm sure there are other great places, but we do love the coziness of this restaurant! (and the calamari and trout are delicious!)

This place was wonderful, with cool mountain temperatures and spectacular scenery. The food and service were outstanding. We count this as our favorite place to eat when we are in Highlands.

Busy night for the restaurant and this impacted the service but definitely not the food. The food was delicious and wine recommendation complimented it well !! Requested a seat on the veranda instead got a seat near the door to the porch where people were passing through, was a bit disappointed.

This was a spot highly recommended. There were a half dozen or more empty tables and the hostess sat us next to the kitchen which was busy and noisy. The hostess told us it was a great table....NOT and then claimed the table was assigned by OpenTable.?? My $16 dollar martini was 1.5oz measured in a jigger and not even close to filling my 'up-glass'. The server was great and the food was good however do not go if you are hungry as the portions are very small. Very disappointed overall.

On the Verandah offers great food value with beautiful lake view in nc mountains. The location is everything, but lobster tail apps, local trout and scallops do not disappoint either.
Always a winner near highlands.

This is one of our favorite spots when visiting the lovely mountain community of Highlands, NC. We had a lovely table outside on the deck facing the gorgeous lake. We'd had a big lunch so decided to do small plates. They were outstanding! The thai shrimp appetizer was excellent as was the crab cake. My husband really enjoyed the asian style salad. He consumed the lamb ribs as he said they were the best he's had. Overall, a perfect evening! You won't go wrong at this special spot. Enjoy!

Went to celebrate a special occasion. The food was all right, but not excellent, and they sat us down and then promptly sat a loud toddler right beside me. I love children, but this was our one night in the Highlands, and I just wanted to have a romantic dinner with my husband. I had the trout and a salad and a glass of wine. We split the salad and dessert. None of it was outstanding, but it was edible and the view was beautiful. They had live music which would have been good except for the child yelling and throwing things on the floor next to me. Again, we made a reservation for 6pm and we were seated first. This could have easily been avoided by the hostess. The meal was over $150 and not worth it. If it had been better food or quieter, I would have loved it and not minded the price at all. We will go to the Lake House or Madison's next time.

Servings have gotten very small. We all left hungry. I have frequented this restaurant for years but now twice in a row disappoint. Also, specialty drink prices way too expensive. We had scallops-4 served on a small bed of pasta and overpowering ginger sauce. Pork chops not tender. Fish piece small but good.

I have been going to On The Veranda since the early 1990's. It is a staple in Highlands. However this visit was simply not up to their standards. The food was good when it arrived but it was quite some time between when we placed our order and when the food was delivered. One of our party was disappointed because he had picked out a French white wine shown on the website as available by the glass but was told by our waiter it was only by the bottle. The wine list has a good selection; however most of it is by the bottle . Our waiter was not attentive at all. The young lady busing the tables and who kept our water glasses filled was delightful. In fact, she was more attentive than our waiter.

I had the Trout with brown pecan butter. It was a huge piece and excellent and hot!
My husband had the scollops with a sesame flavor and angel hair. His favorite!
We had the creme brûlée for dessert and a bottle of Chateau Montelena.
just have to say that it's always a memorable meal and the waitstaff is also
knowledgeable

Our third time dining here and it is a very consistent experience. The food and service are good and the vibe is an eclectic mix of rustic age on the outside and a newer, edgy inside.

The waitress was not very helpful when we asked about gluten free food. When I asked about what the vegetables of the day were, she said she did not know and did not offer to find out. She was very impatient. Also, the person who helped deliver the food must have been in a hurry , and he spilled sauce on my husband's shirt and slacks. He was very blase about it and said that it should not be a problem!
We have been there before and liked it, but we are not going back!

I visited On the Verandah for the first time on Saturday for dinner. What a wonderful, wonderful place. If you are in Highlands, NC (and who doesn't want to be in Highlands?), this is a terrific place for dinner. The service was great and the piano music was lovely. But the two best things about On the Verandah are the food and the view of the lake. The food was creative and interesting, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The view of the lake from the verandah was the crowing touch of the experience. We were there at sunset and gazed at the water sparkling as the sun went down. There are hummingbird feeders next to the windows, and several beautiful hummingbirds visited for their dinner while we were having our dinner. And did I mention that our bottle of wine from Argentina was fantastic? What a great place! I can't wait to go back!

On the Verandah is our favorite restaurant in Highlands, NC. We had our rehearsal dinner here six years ago and go back every year for our anniversary. It’s a special place and the food is hands down the best in the city. The staff is always kind and remembers us as well. Great wine selection too. You can’t go wrong and it’s a place you will always remember and think of fondly.
