On The Square Ratings and Reviews
We always go to On the Square for special occasions and we are never disappointed! The food is always very interesting and they offer a nice variety. The staff is always friendly and meet our every request. I recommend On the Square to all my friends and they have all been extremely happy with their experiences!
We are blessed to live in Tarboro near On The Square, we dine there often for lunch and dinner. We've been going there since we moved here six years ago and we have never had a bad meal.
The food is always delicious and well presented, with a great wine selection. The staff is always cheerful and attentive. They know the menu well and will assist in making selections if you ask.
The Chef teaches cooking classes at the college where I teach and they are always sold out! You can't miss with On The Square, but I would strongly recommend reservations if planning dinner there.
I've eaten at On the Square several times but won't be going back. I order the petite filet and it was so grisly that I couldn't eat it not to mention it was raw (I ordered MW). The wait staff didn't pick up on the fact I didn't eat my $22 steak. Also no poultry on the menu (my husband has a beef and pork allergy) so his only choice was a bowl of soup. We know they serve chicken at lunch and asked if they could make him something and was basically told no. He also ordered a Bloody Mary and was told they don't get many orders for this drink so it was doing to take a long time to make a mix or he could order something else. Overall very disappointing.
I enjoyed a relaxed lunch with friends. I had lovely chicken quesadillas with a perfect bread pudding for dessert. It was a perfect lunch for a cold, winter day. My friends also enjoyed their meals and time to sit and talk. On The Square is a reliable lunch stop, always satisfying.
Great as usual. Been eating at OTS for years. Hard to believe they still “make it exciting to see what they are going to come up with this time. “ NOBODY, can do fish like Stephen, NOBODY! Try their TBC beers also, all made in our best kept secret of Tarboro, NC ! Well, you should tell a few good friends!!!!!😎
Over-hyped!! The is no reason to make a reservation - we had to order at the counter and had to stand in line for 20 minutes to do so. - behind everyone who came in off the street to eat lunch, buy wine, pick up orders, buy gift certificates, etc. They didn’t even give us menus to look at while we waited. We’d initially made reservations to come for dinner with friends for a special evening, but would have been embarrassed to offer this restaurant to mark a memorable occasion. Nothing to see here - wouldn’t make the effort to go again, and wouldn’t recommend it to friends.
I took my girlfriend out here for a nice dinner on a Saturday night and afterwards we strolled through downtown Tarboro. It was a wonderful night, enjoyed the food, especially the specials. Service was great and the server was very knowledgeable about all of the menu and the specials. I would highly recommend to any of my friends looking for a nice place to dine!
Very disappointed. We’re locals and have had good meals and service previously. We took family visiting from California tonight and were embarrassed. We started with cocktails, which were excellent. The Jalapeño Margaritas was outstanding. We ordered a bottle of Chardonnay with our entrees that was on the wine list. However, they had to chill it as it came off the shelf in their “wine store.” We ordered an Beet & Arugula salad that was first brought out without beets. Our server was too busy in the front dining room and we got tired of waiting for her to check-in with us. We had to ask another server to assist. No apology. New salads had five slivers of beets. Really? For a $12 salad? What is the food cost on fresh beets? The vegetarian entree ($20) was disgusting. I refused to pay for the dish. It was that bad. The seafood risotto was beautifully presented. The risotto was overlooked (mushy). The chicken & waffles was above average. The chicken cutlet was tasty and crispy. The waffles were cold and soggy. The maple gravy was delicious! Having waited tables while in school, I tip 18% average, 20% good, and 22% for excellent service. While we did not receive 20% level service, I tipped our server at this level as the restaurant was busy and appeared to be struggling with keeping up.
We went twice in 7 days - first for a birthday, second with out of state guests. The calamari appetizer was beyond excellent (wasabi & honey drizzle). Petit Filet a gem, as was the red fish. For more basic fare - try the ribeye. Done to a 'T', can't go wrong, if not adventurous.
Wait staff excellent - especially Hannah (who was our server both occasions). Very responsive to inquiries and banter from the table.
Try the Tarboro Brewing Comapny's Abbeye brew - a brown ale (or close to it).
Coming from the west coast (CA and WA), we appreciated the emphasis on wines from the fire-ravaged areas in Napa-Sonoma, to assist in rebuilding efforts.
Do not miss this experience! On The Square is the best-kept secret in eastern North Carolina. We had the mushroom risotto, which was a beautiful flavor explosion, and our salads and desserts were also wonderful. They also have an incredible wine list. We had a wonderful night.
As always, outstanding meal and service. Menu changes weekly and offers a great culinary opportunity . Appetizers, entrees, as well as deserts are creative and different offering a dining experience outside the norm for Eastern NC. Inez and Steven have produced a true gem. Well worth it. Great beer at Tarboro Brewing Company also.
Always enjoy dining here for lunch. Fresh local food cooked just right. Brought two first timers with me and they really enjoyed their food. They had soup (corn chowder) and sandwich and were really impressed with both. Said it was delicious. I deflinitely wll be back if I'm in the area and my friends will be bringing their families and friends back there to enjoy the delicious food. Highly recommend to anyone that likes locally owned restaurant food that's fresh and cooked to everyone's expectations.
