I chose to dine here for my birthday because it was the last night of a restaurant that I've gone to in the past and have enjoyed. However being the last night the food and some elements of the service fell flat! Very disappointing
I love this restaurant and have been going for several years. The servers are great and the bartenders really know their stuff. On this particular visit, however, service was painfully slow, there were hairs in our deviled eggs, and we all got sick from the mussels which had that all-too-alarming "fishy" taste. While I'd love to say I'll be back, sadly it may take me some time to give Ombra another chance.
Great small plates, wine and pizza
We had a great experience at Ombra! My boyfriend and I went for a quick date night out during the week and took advantage of the Tuesday $10 pizza, which was fabulous. Good service and cozy, warm atmosphere. We also tried the oysters which we thought were quite good and reasonably priced. There was a lot on the menu that we didn't have a chance to try, so we will definitely be back!
Excellent pizza and small Italian plates, including vegetarian dishes. We found the decor (which includes shared booths and a dropped beams from the ceiling) to be odd and somewhat claustrophobic. Our waiter was fantastic.
The food here is excellent: hand-made pastas, fantastic salads and tapas, and a small selection of delicious desserts also made in house. Our server was really helpful about choosing wines, and everything else as a matter of fact.
It's a pretty casual atmosphere, which is a welcome option for groups and families. Space is a little close together so I wouldn't pick Ombra for a super romantic date. However, for a casual date it was perfect.
A great neighborhood spot. Amazing pizza and wine. Super cozy
I have been here a few times and the food is always tasty. It's a nice way to taste a bunch of dishes by eating the small plates. Some can be pricey ut I think it's worth the money
Food and table service was good. Hostess was not pleasant. 3 times she she insisted on passing us in the aisle rather than waiting 10 seconds until we passed or got in to our seats.
Great time! We'll be back again.
The service was a bit slow but it was a very busy evening, make sure to get reservations! The food and rinks were great make sure to try to the oyster shooters.
My wife dined at the restaurant and accidentally left her cc and mangler kindly texted me
Delicious! My dad was in town and we decided to take advantage of the $10 pizza/$5 glasses of wine deal. We started with the polenta fries, which were perfectly crisp, warm, and delicious, and the baby spinach and beet salad, which had a perfect balance of salty (walnuts, gorgonzola) and sweet (beets, oranges). I loved my tartuffi pizza, and my dad raved about the wood grilled chicken. My one and only criticism: The wood benches in the booths are quite uncomfortable, and many of the (minimal) cushions are in need of repair. Otherwise, a perfect dinner experience. We'll definitely be back!
Excellent food. Enjoyed the small plate assortment.
Cozy unique interior with ample sized booths. On the weeknight we were there, our server worked the whole place but was perfectly attentive. Prices are near the higher end.
Outstanding service! Our waiter, John, always knows the right pairings of foods and very knowledgeable of wines and cocktails.
Food was poor to mediocre at best and completely unimaginative. Papparadelle was not fresh, was overcooked (mushy), bland and had hardly any ragu. Prosciutto and melon had overripe melon. Prosciutto wrapped dates had entirely too much balsamic. The only good part of our meal was the wine, as the restaurant has a pretty extensive wine list.
The place is really cool, and the service was good. Food was just a roller coaster.
Would definitely recommend for drinks and pizza, as the pizza was fantastic.
Some of the other items, Panzanella, deviled eggs, and meatballs were just mediocre.
Our server, I think his name is Caesar, was the best casual dining server we have had in Chicago.
My date scored a prime outdoor table for two. We ordered drinks and several appetizers, after which we shared a pizza. We were there for quite a long time, and were never made to feel rushed. We ordered drinks first. Then we chatted. Then ordered several appetizers. After enjoying those and each other, we moved on to order a pizza when we realized we were still in the mood for more food. Everything we ordered was fresh and flavorful. I'd definitely return to this Andersonville neighborhood hotspot.
The food was good, although not necessarily great for the price. The service was beyond unacceptable. Our waiter never actually checked on us once in the 30+ minutes we waited for dinner, and our dinner came out before the appetizers with no comment or explanation.
Will not return.
I would say this was somewhat of a mixed experience. The food was tasty, in some cases really delicious, and the service was good. The downside, however, was that the portions on the shared small plates were so small it was almost comical. When you feel like you need a magnifying glass and a pair of tweezers to divide one squash blossom among 3 people, things start to feel uncomfortable. Maybe to some this would seem fancy but bringing a guest here I actually just felt kind of embarrassed at the lack of value. I also wish the plates could have been timed a bit better so that it didn't feel like our meal went by in a half hour. But again, the food certainly tasted good (I recommend the meatballs) and our server was very professional and attentive. If you come here, maybe stick to just pizza.
John our server was outstanding in pairing dishes etc. very knowledgeable and friendly. We took guests from suburbs to experience this outstanding restaurant. Each dish brought out to us got better and better. What a vibrant scene!
Food was very good but pricey. This was my first visit. I may try it again.
Had a great time here. Enjoyed the atmosphere and the food.
Trouble with the air conditioning therefore very warm. Seemed like new wait staff therefore there were some serving issues
Excellent neighborhood treasure, offering excellent food, tapas style, for those who like to share. The ingredients are fresh, the flavors memorable and the service attentive without being overbearing.
Be sure to stop at the bar for a custom cocktail from Meredith, she makes great suggestions and tasty treats for grown ups!
Really good pizza crust - slightly denser than Neapolitan crust. The tomato sauce is just slightly sweet and had nice flavor. We will absolutely be going back for seconds!
Friendly and comfortable neighborhood place.
Took forever to be served. Waited over 40 minutes for entree. And they were not even that busy. Although they said they were saw numerous empty tables. Also what struck me as odd when we entered for table the host did not even sit us. He simply pointed to the table behind the host stand and I asked what he said. And he said again that is your table. Here. Did my even seat is. Was odd. Don't think I will ever go back there. Too much attitude bad service and average food. Nothing to brag about that's for sure.
We went early (Happy Hour time) before a show on a Friday night. It was so good! The oysters were fresh! The pizza was amazing!!! And, we had planned to order more small plates but after the portion size of the pizza...we decided to come back another time to try them!! We had a great time!
Excellent pastas and inventive tapas. Good moderately priced wine menu. Very helpful staff.
I made a reservation just to make sure we'd get a table right away, but it was probably unnecessary at 6pm on a Friday. They did fill up as it got a bit later, though. The staff was very patient as we waited for my in-laws to join us (rainy Friday traffic), and highly tolerant of my kids' antics. Great wine list and really good menu, with something for all ages. The food was all quite good.
Really disappointing. Service was inattentive and uninformed. Check was presented without asking if we wanted anything else. When one of our party asked for another drink, we were informed that, "the table was being held for a reservation." We had been there less than two hours and the table opposite us was open. As a former server, I know I would have been fired for making a remark like that to a table. If the table was really needed, a manager should have asked us to move to the bar for a complimentary drink. Very bad form.
Amazing service! Pizza was delicious!
GOOD atmosphere but unusually dark. A candle on the table would have been the perfect remedy.
BETTER initial service would have been nice. I always am somewhat bothered when I ask for "just another minute" with the menu, and the waiter interprets that as permission to ignore us for 15. (Perhaps that candle on the table would also have helped him see that we'd finished perusing the food list.)
BEST polenta fries and calamari to be found in the area, and I hate to tell Pizza Apart that they have some Pie Competition, but Ombra truly knows what they're doing in this department. Overall pleasant visit. I'll be back.
We tried the restaurant to donate to the Dine out for Life event and really enjoyed our meal! Everything we tried was high quality - we can't recommend the wood-fired pizzas and pasta dishes highly enough.
I've been to Ombra a few times. Each time with some friends just to get together. The tapas style dining was perfect for just talking and eating. The oysters were fresh and delicious! The setting is great to hang out and enjoy a great meal. The service was timed nicely and we didn't feel rushed at all. I'm definitely look forward to go back!
Had a great night with the guys. Our server, whose name I unfortunately didn't catch, was very attentive and made some great recommendations for food and wine. Everything tastes great. Definitely bringing the girlfriend here next month for sure.
Amazing and artistic booth decor is a must see! The cocktails are awesome - classics with and Italian twist.
The food is world class...and the open hearth fire oven due at disappoint.
