OM Real Indian Food Ratings and Reviews
Ordered two chicken dishes along with rice and bread.
The chicken in both dishes was completely over cooked. In the butter chicken it was like pre cut, pre cooked chucks thrown in.
We would have sent the food back but no one checked on us and we couldn't get the waiters attention till the end of a half eaten meal.
We did advise the person who gave us the bill but she seemed not concerned in the slightest.
There will not be a repeat visit... most disappointing.
I really liked the food. I had samosas, the lamb palak, the lemon rice and a taste of my friend's chicken tiki masala.
The samosas were ok (didn't have peas) and the sauces were good. I've had more flavorful samosas so I was slightly disappointed but it wasn't fatal.
My favorite was the lamb palak. The meat was pretty tender and I love spinach on anything so it was a hit with me. The lemon rice was different and I loved it.
My friend's chicken tiki masala was a bit disappointing. The meat was slightly over cooked and the sauce was runny. I liked the taste but she said it was a little bland.
I'm not very experienced with Indian food but I liked Om and will probably be back to try something new.
We walked in and were seated right away. I made a reservation as I knew the place was small but wasn't sure of the crowd (we went on a Tuesday evening at 8 pm). Our server knew exactly what we were referring to when asking questions about the food, and he was so lovely and very helpful. Our appetisers were delicious and we intentionally ordered enough food to take some home. SO good! I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for authentic Indian food and not americanized. Go! it's delicious and you won't regret it!
Service was terrible. We received our bread order at the end of meal and it wasn't cooked properly. One rice dish was too spicy and some of the Erie was hard. Usually, food and service is good. They were busy with take out orders and neglectful towards seated customers. Not sure we will go back again
There are pros and cons here:
Very small tight space makes for uncomfortable seating. Small small tables really close to one another
Small portions. If you have an adult appetite no way one main course will do
Food is ok. Have had better in many places
Most positive thing is the service. They are very pleasant and helpful. Not sure if that is enough
To make place a winner
Om has a lovely little room with white tablecloths and paper coverings on the cloths. The curries are authentic - they'll adjust the spice level to your liking - and the Naan is divine. The Tandoor oven proffers wonderful chicken and great shrimp, and they have a few Goan specialties along with excellent FRESH vegetable dishes. All condiments are better than most (including a coriander/mint dipping sauce that has not been destroyed by sugar) and they will bring anything on the side you might like: chopped chilies, chopped coriander, yoghurt etc. Haven't tried too many dishes yet but am definitely planning to return. What makes this place particularly worthwhile, besides the excellent fresh food, is the smooth, efficient, and very lively & kind service. Wonderful wait staff. Great buy.
Lovely, intimate restaurant with good food and great service. The atmosphere is cozy and congenial. We had the butter chicken and the lamb vindaloo, and both were very good. For an appetizer we had the vegetable samosa. This was crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside. We would recommend this place for casual dining for those who need an Indian fix. Nice place!
When this restaurant opened, it was a wonderful thing. An Indian restaurant in a contemporary space, serving a wide range of classic Indian cuisine, well prepared - the flavors well defined and different from the norm, the service attentive and the atmosphere fun. It has all slipped several notches, so much so that I won't return until I get a sense that it has changed.
The contemporary look - inherited from the prior restaurant - was never completely understood by the current owners. Too bad, since it was not only attractive, but a signal that the cooking was also on a cutting edge. If one were to remove the decorative interventions (the awful photographs hung crookedly, the ordinary wall sconces, and worst of all, the cream colored walls (once white)), the place would look better, but unfortunately, the look is a signal that much has also changed with the food, the service, and the ambiance. It is now ordinary, or worse.
Onion bhaji, for example, are leaden and doughy - they were once crisp and sharply flavorful. Other dishes - such as the Goan crab curry - are now more about heat than subtle flavors, as if that was an appropriate substitution.
The space is narrow and the tables are small. That was OK in the past, but now there are just too many tables, nowhere to hang a coat, and the net result is that there is always a chance that with the service rushing back and forth, something will get spilled - and watch out if that's curry on your coat. We were lucky, as were the couple at the table near the door, who only got soaked with cold water, but be warned.
It is hard to run a restaurant in New York, especially so on this stretch of Second Avenue, torn apart for so many years by the Second Avenue subway construction, but that's no excuse for letting one's standards drop, as I feel they have. I want Om to succeed, but I need to read and hear that it's improved before I return.
This tiny little restaurant is full of personality and flavor. I was returning for just my second time to the restaurant, and the owner recognized me. He welcomed me and my guest like old friends, and provided excellent service throughout the night.
The BYOB policy is great, and flexible. The naan was absolutely delicious, as was the rest of the food. A great value, and always makes for great leftovers. Will definitely be back to try more things on the menu, or for lunch!
Have been ordering from Om on Seamless for a year, came by to try it in person with a friend. Was seated immediately per reservation. Tables are close together, and all the tables were full after we were seated.
We stayed at the restaurant for 45 minutes, no one had food. The table to our right received one of two appetizers ordered (at least 20 minutes apart, we did not wait to see their second), and the table to our left did not have their order taken while we were seated. Neither table received water. Our table did not even receive menus while we were at the restaurant and after 45 minutes placed an order (from the same restaurant) for delivery. We enjoyed the food from home, instead.
I ordered a $12.95 chicken dish, the waiter asked if I'd prefer the boneless version so I said yes. The bill came and my entree was $17.95. I asked to see where this was dish was on the menu so I could verify price since I wasn't aware, and he said it wasn't on the menu. I said I ordered a dish that was $5 less and he didn't change the bill.
Found this restaurant randomly. Had dinner with a friend. The food was good and we had one unusual appetizer. Because we went on a slow summer night and were the only ones, the service was oppressive in that the server came over to our table too many times to ask us how was the food. They seem to do a lot of take-out business
