Oliver's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
From the minute we pulled up to the Valet the service was excellent. Our bartender Lou was so attentive and entertaining. The restaurant was beautifully decorated for the Holidays. Our server was top shelf and the meal was one of the finest I've had in a long time. Can't wait to return..
Left to our own devices by daughters with out-of-town plans, we opted to invite my mother-in-law to join us for dinner at Oliver's. A lovely lady is "Gramma", 81 years young, and someone who has provided many a delicious holiday feast for us over the years. She's delightful company, and appreciates good food and good service. Happily, we enjoyed both at Oliver's on Nov 23.
Gramma is a tad hearing-impaired, and I had I asked for a nice quiet spot in my OpenTable reservation notes. They delivered: the maitre d' whisking us to a spot around the corner from the bar that was a pocket of relative quiet on a busy night.
An alert, friendly server appeared, who quickly took our cocktails orders - and delivered them in just a few minutes. They were excellent (Bombay Sapphire martini, Aperol Spritz and a nice NZ Sauv Blanc).
The wife's squash soup was very flavorful, but arrived a tad lukewarm. We all sampled, and agreed the flavor was outstanding. I shared my mixed green salad (ranch) with Gramma, who enjoyed it as much as I. VERY fresh ingredients, chilled just right. My prime filet was rare as requested and marvelous: tender, deliciously moist, and almost - almost - worth the significant price. Wife opted for wild mushroom lasagna with brie (loved it). Gramma went for seared salmon. Although not a big eater, she cleaned her plate with gusto, murmuring praise between bites.
Wine list was more than adequate. We stuck with by-the-glass options (Gramma had her Sauv Blanc, while my wife and I enjoyed a nicely-balanced Malbec). Always fun when the wine complements the food!
Dessert was a somewhat pedestrian peanut-butter pie, accompanied by decent decaf.
Service could have been just a bit more attentive, but we realized showing up at 6:30 on Thanksgiving hit them right in the busiest part of the night. Not a huge quibble.
Overall, Oliver's delivered nicely. We'll be back for sure.
My wife had the seared scallops with risotto an roasted carrots. I had the seared salmon with smoked mashed potatoes. Both meals were excellent. The service was also excellent. Our waiter was knowledgeable and personable. He knew the menu and wine list well. He was able to confirm that our wine selection would go with our meals. Oliver’s lived up to it’s reputation as one of the best restaurants in Buffalo.
Fabulous food, wine and service. Unfortunately the maitre'd spilled an entire glass of water on my husband toward the end of the night and his suit was drenched. His apology was insincere and he went on his way after it happened. My husband felt like a fool because his suit (just returned from the dry cleaner) was a mess. Charlie, our server, apologized and told us that they would pay for the cleaning. It was just a little strange that the owner and the gentleman who spilled the water made so little of it. An accident to be sure. but the response was lacking. Not what you would expect from such a fine restaurant.
If you are looking for a well spaced out, no rush evening, this is the place. We sat at the bar for a cocktail before dinner and didn't sit in our seats until 30 minutes after our reservation time. We ordered a glass of wine when we sat and we got to enjoy conversation and company a good 20 minutes before anyone bothered us to order our food. Once we ordered our appetizer was well spaced out between our actual meal. Again, we were not felt rushed at all. The food itself was absolutely amazing. I recommend the king crab small plate to start. The scallops melted in your mouth and were amazing. The peanut butter tort for dessert was a dream come true. All in all we spent 3 hours at the restaurant and the experience was great! I also recommend you ask to sit in Charlie's section.
The veal was very good. The anniversary card and complimentary champagne was also very nice ! Did not care for the salad with the cauliflower white chocolate pudding. I know it sounds weird but sometimes those unusual combinations are surprisingly delicious especially when recommended by your waiter. Absolutely terrible salad
As always, Oliver's showed why it sets the bar for the fine dining scene in Buffalo NY. Chef Warhol's culinary genius, and extra flourishes made a most indelibly favorable impression on our out of town guests- both foodies from Chicago who called it one of the most memorable meals they ever had. Add to it sublime, knowledgeable, professional service and you have a perfect evening. We know why Chef has been at James Beard twice!! Absolute culinary perfection! And Dave Schutte's leadership and vision define what is great about the food scene in Buffalo.
First the valet gentlemen was great. The greeting staff, waiter made us feel very comfortable. The food was excellent. A very nice place for our anniversary meal. Loved the booth arrangements and the décor was upscale and felt like it was somewhere special. The only negative was there were no bar seats available as many people were eating and drinking so rather than having a before dinner cocktail we had to be seated. Other than that issue......very satisfied. Fred our waiter was terrific!!!!! He made us feel special and welcomed not just another table with people at it!!
My husband and I, along with our son and his wife, went to celebrate my birthday. We'd read a stellar review of the restaurant recently and were looking forward to an exceptional experience. Some of the food was quite good, notably the beet salad, the calamari and the chicken risotto, while the pork terrine was uninteresting. The small plates were generally huge. For me, this is not a recommendation I really prefer it when small plates are actually small so that I can have a salad and two small plates plus a dessert for dinner. The desserts were very nice but again, they were too large. Luckily, we were able to split them among the group so that no one person was overwhelmed by a single item.
The service was excellent. Our server was quite helpful in encouraging us to split one of the small plates since we'd asked her about their sizes; she was quite right, since half of the risotto was more than enough for each of us. Also, the rest of the service in terms of the removal of plates and flatware and bringing of new items was almost flawless and unobtrusive with the exception of the overeagerness of one server to remove my glass of scotch before I'd finished it.
The restaurant was rather noisy. We could hear one another without yelling, but the atmosphere was not at all what I'd call relaxing. The noise and hubbub was enough to make me reluctant to return. It might not bother other people, but I didn't like it.
This restaurant has been spectacular for many years. In spite of the change of ownership it continues to reinvent itself and only improve. The cuisine is spectacular, innovative and consistently delicious. The bar scene is active, environment extremely comfortable and staff excellent. I have enjoyed lunch or dinner here many many times.
