Oliver & Bonacini Café Grill, Yonge & Front Ratings and Reviews
I wouldn't return to this restaurant. The food was what I would call mediorce and it is way over priced. I paid $40 for a steak frites that was burnt on the outside and underdone on the inside. It was sloppily thrown on top of a pile of plain french fries (which I assume were from frozen, not made fresh). I have had this meal at a number of other restaurants, so I was expecting something more in terms of presentation and flavour. To say the least, it was a complete let down.
As expected, O&B overall did not disappoint. Ambiance, service and food were good. Had a hiccup with one entrée that was overcooked but this was remedied straight away and even discounted from the bill (something I had not expected or desired). Our Server was exceptional and the $20 discount on bottled wine was a nice surprise. The beer selection disappointed one guest as no wheat beers were offered and the portion of the rib dinner served for $28 was pretty skimpy (3 small ribs which was marketed by the Server as a "full rack" - I think he misspoke). I will definitely come back and recommend this restaurant to anyone. Summer patio is especially nice for pre or post theatre food & drinks.
I'm sorry to say but this will most likely be my last trip to Oliver and Bonacini. This used to be an restaurant that was a pleasent place to come to with friends that had different fare than the chain restaurant that are riff around Toronto. The menu choices were good, the meals were cooked well, and I always left feeling I had treated myself to a restaurant that was a cut above what is offered along Yonge street. What I've seen in the last few years is a total downgrade in the product that is being offered at the restaurant. The much touted Yukon Gold fries became soft and saggy like well worn and tired showlaces. The meat over cooked and dry. Salads drowning in lacklustre dressing. Hamburger buns that fall apart after one bite. The servers are fine. A few lessons in engaging the customers a bit more would be helpful but the problem is not the service. The problem is that the cost cutting of the food product is showing and it's making a formerly great neighbourhood restaurant look like a fading old couch that isn't as inviting with it's springs poking you in the back.
This is the second time we went to Oliver and Bonacini on 2 separate trips to Toronto and both times we were super impressed with everyone that works here. All the staff are professional and friendly and have gone out of their way to make sure we were well taken care of. Whoever does the hiring for you is doing a great job, oh and the food is fantastic!
food was very good. We were early and they accepted us right away which was great. Service could have been better - did not come back for wine order and brought us our food. Dessert ordered and did not ask if we wanted coffee, after dinner drink etc. Seemed to be rushed a bit as bill just dropped
We came here for my birthday and it was just lovely. My mum (a Brit) had fish & chips and loved it, my sis had the Butter Chicken and loved it and I had the chicken and mushroom penne and yes, I loved it! Crab dip - amazing! And to top it off - vanilla creme brûlée - my fave! Would highly recommend O&B!
The drinks were presented incorrectly, to the wrong individual, the appetizers were placed at the table next to us and then had to corrected by the couple next to us and then they were removed from their table and placed on ours, again to the incorrect individuals, and again with the main course they were placed incorrectly to each of us again, medium well no aioli and medium rare. The food was tasty, mushroom soup, tomatoes salad, the steaks on the steak Frits were cooked perfect, but sat on a full plate of frozen type fries, no presentation, tasteless. No veggie. The service was slow. Dessert menus dropped off and the restaurant had cleared and it took 20 minutes for the waiter to come back to see if we wanted dessert or coffee. Very poor service other than the phone call to advise we had left a scarf behind.
I was pleasantly surprised at the reasonable prices - for downtown Toronto. Everything was delicious from Calamari to mushroom soup to roast chicken (the roasted skin with salt & pepper was best ever). Rodney Strong Merlot was perfect and reasonably priced. Our server Spencer was thorough and attentive and others helped out. A great team.
Great, reliable standby in very central location at Front / Yonge. Conservative decor and menu make it a good please-all choice for larger groups. My only negative is that the menu has been basically the same for years. A more robust seasonal / rotating menu would make it a more interesting choice for regular visits.
The service was absolutely outstanding! We were at a cold table with a draft and they moved us instantly. One of our friends ordered a meal and it was very spicy and they recooked another one for her! They went out of their way to make sure we were happy with the food and the service and we were!
Disappointing experience at O&B at Yonge & Front St. Our server struggled all night. She messed up 3 different drink orders and brought one of our dinner guests the wrong entree. Nothing was offered in terms of apology except the servers comment of “ugggghhhh... there’s always one table!” Which suggests she regularly struggles with the size of her section of tables when it’s busy. My dinner was average at best. I had the rigatoni which was barely warm and the noodles were over cooked. My wife had the butter chicken which was “ok” but lacked flavour, our guests had the steak frites which seemed to be very good and our other guest ended up with the crab cakes (not what he ordered) but he suggested it was decent. We went to O&B more for the location as we were seeing a show at Sony Centre, but I wouldn’t race back unless it was out of convenience.
Service was excellent from the front of house staff - Host, server, food runners etc.
We were rushed for time as we had a show to see across the street. The server made a note of it to the kitchen and food came out really fast and it was fresh and delicious .
Our server (Tom) was great--friendly and on top of his game. One of the female food servers needs to learn how to serve food--not with your arm across the diners face, reaching over. I had the salmon--very skimpy on the sauteed root vegetables underneath my salmon--four or five slices of radish, zucchini (I think!) My friends food--pasta, butter chicken, was fantastic. The pizza (we had it as an appetizer) is nothing to write home about!! In all, we'll be back to give it another try, or try another location. Most of the food we saw go by looked great and the drinks were good.
Great night out, this restaurant doesn't disappoint. Great location, good food, nice atmosphere. Our food arrived a little quick, didn't get time to eat our appetizer before the main meal arrived, so the service could have been a little more organized. But overall a great place to go out for a meal.
Food was great. Service was horrible. Felt rushed. Kept pouring our sparking water glass after glass just so we could spend $9.00 of sparkling water. After our meal they asked if we wanted desert, I said no thank you. They came over with the bill which I did not ask for as my husband and I were enjoying the rest of our anniversary evening/$3.00 sparkling water. Would not dine here again. Hoping the other locations are better.
I have been to this restaurant many times before and have always loved the food. I don't know what happened, but my turkey club was disgusting. It's never looked like that before. The turkey was really gross and the sandwich bread and toppings were mushy and soggy. Really disappointed.
