Friends from Hawaii were in town and we took them here. It was a wonderful experience! Great food and amazing service!
Overpriced and out of stock, below average overall. Neighborhood spot has potential but falls short.
Booked a table at 7:15 pm on a Friday evening for a dinner date, and walked in to the underground dining room which was cool. Service was slow, and the seasonal menu was small enough as it is, but they were out of a few of the items on the already-limited menu (understandable if it was late but this was just after 7 o'clock). There was a seasonal vegetable paparadelle but they didn't have the paparadelle and substituted linguini instead, they were out of 1 out of 4 appetizers, and 1 out of 4 entrees. I got the lobster bisque which sounded promising but was diluted (tasted like it was watered down to save ingredient costs), nowhere near the consistency of a bisque. The filet cost $39 and was acceptable but nowhere near the premium cost - I am happy to pay that for a great steak experience, this was not. Space was sparsely decorated and noise traveled, there was a group of ladies at the table behind to us who talked loud enough to disrupt our meal, and I don't think they were talking especially loud, just that the noise bounced off the walls and floor.
Last nitpick: the host/server couldn't pronounce "bouillabaisse" - he pronounced the "l's" and couldn't talk to its composition adequately, this matters if you're going to offer a specifically French dish on your menu. Oh, and they did not have 1 out of 2 fishes included in the bouillabaisse.
A very special and cozy place with tons of ambiance. Attentive but not intrusive service and outstanding food choices.
Fantastic cuisine excellent service very well priced, we will return again and again.
Nice place, quiet, food was OK. I had the trout, nicely done, but the subtle flavor of the fish was overwhelmed by the yams it was sitting on. Each was good, but an odd combination which didn't really work for me. My partner had the steak, which was very nice, flavorful and lean but still tender. I really liked the short but inexpensive wine list. We would go back if we lived in the neighborhood, but not worth a special trip out of the way for us.
Lovely food, top quality ingredients and wine. Very friendly place. Would go back in a heartbeat.
Olea will not disappoint you. Their small menu allows them to focus on what the do well. Always a tasty soup and the last two visits I had their delicious mussels. Very attentive service and nice wine selection. A delightful evening--thank you.
Two friends and I had a most enjoyable evening. Welcomed and well-fed.
All of the positive reviews that I have seen were dead on. This place is a gem. Great food and great service. Menu changes constantly due to the local ingredients and what is available. If you have your heart set on something call ahead and they will let you know what is available that day. We were very pleased and will return again.
Very special, small and cozy spot. Only serve beer and wine.
Olea is a hidden gem that should not be missed. A cozy neighborhood spot with an excellent chef. We have tried almost everything on their menu and every bite was good. They put a lot of thought and care into every dish that comes out of their small kitchen. The wine list is small but has something for everyone for a reasonable price. They are our favorite restaurant in this neighborhood full of restaurants.
When I searched for best Mexican restaurant in SF, this came up as a recommendation. The food was quite good. No bean and rice combo plates here, though. In fact, no burritos or tacos or enchiladas.
The guacamole was excellent. Filet mignon was small but superb (when have you ever seen filet mignon on the menu at a Mexican restaurant? 😜)
The meal was good. I hadn't planned on spending $150 for a week night dinner for two at a Mexican restaurant. Save this for a special occasion.
Really good, friendly service and the food was outstanding. A real value too.
One of our go to neighborhood restaurants. Fresh, beautifully prepared food. Wonderful staff. Small but appropriate wine list at good prices. A cozy, warm refuge after a tough day.
Delicious food, cozy atmosphere, wonderful service.
Went for diner.
Service was great just like the food.
A yummy highlight: the dessert; Buddha s hands cheesecake. Strongly recommended
Nice quiet atmosphere for diner
Best breakfast in the neighborhood. French press coffee, breakfast sandwich, vegetable omelet & avocado toast...the chef takes every plate to the next level.
Interesting food, with a menu that changes often. Small, intimate, and QUIET! The latter is an rare and highly valued attraction in the hideously noisy world of SF restaurants.
This place is a small SF gem. I've wandered by it a few times while walking around town and finally went the other night. Such a cool atmosphere, candle lit, quaint and good food! Five Stars.
This is a fantastic neighborhood gem... great food... classic SF character... great service...
This was soooooo yummy. I ate my whole plate and did not feel over stuffed. Even had a small space for desert. Wine was great too. Phillip was a dream!
Olea is always so delicious, and the service staff (and owner?) are so warm, friendly, and seem to enjoy working at this restaurant. We've dined here often and will continue to consider Olea one of our very favorites.
A companion and I shared early dinner. Both had wine and seafood entrees, one rock cod with lentils and bok choy; the other the evening's special, a combo of shellfish and other fish with pasta. The food was perfectly acceptable. However, service is as important as other factors. I arrived at the restaurant 10 minutes before its opening at 6:00. The door was gated closed and when I indicated my presence to two employees I was ignored and kept waiting, obvious they would not let me enter before 6:00. When mentioning this to our waitress she said that it was a "security" problem that kept me standing outside their door in broad daylight. I am an 80 year old woman, hardly posing a threat. This sort of thing will keep me from another trip to Olea when we have a few hundred choices in this city where there is common sense regarding their customers. In the 1-1/2 hours of our dinner, there was a total of two other diners. Take note, owners and managers.
Very welcoming atmosphere. Mushroom torte great starter. Value of wine selections terrific. Small cozy
This was the second time we have had dinner at OLEA before a concert at The Masonic; it is so convenient! OLEA is very small, cozy and casual. It opens at 6:00 which is perfect if you are attending a concert as we were. The food was very good. I had the short ribs which were delish, and my husband had the ling COD which he really liked also. We shared a little gem salad with slices of persimmon on top that was very good. For dessert we shared the chai tea creme brûlée, which also was really good. We definitely recommend OLEA.
Overall the food and ambiance is great. The portion size feels about 20% too small for the price however. I get SF rent is expensive, but $24 for about 3/4 cup of pasta and 4 shrimp is pretty high.
A real treat. Local, Organic, Clean, and Delicious Food. Warm, personable, and fun Service. Make a reservation and enjoy!
Tucked away below street level. A great little spot with delicious food, by an owner that cares about quality
The host greeted us as we entered. The environment was warm and quiet, which made dinner quite enjoyable. The food had many options, especially for vegetarians.
The duck was delectable with onion and potatoes. The atmosphere was nice and intimate but not crowded
We've dined there twice, once with friends and as a couple. Great food, lovely staff, nicely quiet, you can actually have a conversation. very charming.
Super small. Only about 6 entrees but the 2 we had were great. Since small service was spot on. Nice atmosphere partially below ground. Will certainly go back.
A charming small neighborhood restaurant with good food and wine. Caters to locals and those seeking a pleasant, unhurried dinner. Limited menu which was fine for our group, which included vegans.
Quality of food and service is upscale, yet relaxed and unpretentious, perfect for an excellent casual evening. Mushroom risotto was rich and hearty; salmon was thick, tender, moist. Banana gelato was unique, refreshing. An authentic gem.
Short but good menu.
Food was high quality for the $ and staff was excellent. The below street level ambiance was neat, watching the cable car and people go by, loved the San Francisco related artwork, place just felt cozy and was not too loud. Recommended.
You step down into this street corner restaurant to find a quiet casual but simply elegant establishment. The menu isn't grand but the dishes offer quite a variety to satisfy many taste moods. I was in the mood for meat and had the pork chop. The waiter warned me that it is cooked thru until white. I assume some may find this overdone. It was as advertised but was clearly not dry. Served on a bed of vegetables my only qualm (thus the star reduction) is that the whole dish was overly salty for my taste and that the squash was dry. The wine selection was good and the Grenache I choose paired well. I was too full after the sizable main portion for dessert.
I enjoyed my experience and would return.
Nice place, great food and really like the manager...
We really enjoyed our dinner at Olea. They were able to easily meet my dietary restrictions (vegan) and my husband's (carnivore) without having to make any substitutions. They provided a lovely reasonably priced bottle of Syrah, press pot coffee for after the meal with soymilk and a lovely glass of port. The menu is not huge but it does cover a lot of ground. Service was really good - all three servers worked together to ensure we were taken care. Would definitely recommend to a friend and would surely go back if I am in the area. For this particular outing we were going to a show at the Masonic which is an easy, though uphill, three block away.
