Everyone enjoyed their food (my skirt steak special was tender flavorful and perfectly cooked) and the service was really excellent. I had a margarita that was delicious but mostly ice - not a good value at $14. I found the ambiance a bit cafeteria-like and not what I had expected from previous visits.
Ole is under new management and has turned from a jewel of a fine dining Mexican restaurant into a seedy bar. I was shocked by the new ambience. I had a housefull of guests whom I had invited to Ole for a special Christmas get together, and I was so embarrassed by the noisy environment, unappealing decor, and mediocre food. Sadly, I won't be returning again.
Had the duck mole dish which was just amazing. As tasty as terrific duck we had is south of France which looks and tastes almost like a cut of beef and with the great sauce (and Mexican style mashed potatoes) made for a meal that was definitely worth the price.
Most of our party enjoyed their food and drinks, but agreed that it was overpriced for what it was. We've definitely had better Mexican for a third of the cost. My chicken tinga tacos were extremely spicy - to the point where I could only eat 1.5 out of 4 tacos. Had to give the rest away to my friends who also agreed that they were way too spicy (and one of them LOVES spicy food). Don't think I'll be coming back.
Olé continues to deliver a great dinner, but not quite as fresh and notable flavors as years past. The guacamole made table-side still delights, and the service is friendly. But reducing the restaurant into the back room made the ambiance a bit less elegant and cool. We'd go back but with slightly lowered expectations.
The dining room is behind the take-out area in this restaurant, so I had some reservations when I first walked in with my extended family in tow, but we had a lovely, affordable meal that delivered authentic Central American cuisine. There’s a big menu, so everyone in our (large) Party was able to find something they were excited about, including the vegan and some of my family members with more pedestrian (read: no spice, nothing “weird”) palates. They were also happy to accommodate our party of 9 without issue (something I discovered is a rarity in the Boston area). Generous portions and really good salsa!!
Our food was delicious. Our server was friendly but so, so, so slow. The space itself is very warm and welcoming. They are going for the tequila crowd and were a bit surprised by my order of a glass of wine... wine snobs look elsewhere! After all is said and done, the mole sauce is worth every penny.
They must have a new cook at Ole. We stopped going there over a year ago because the food was cookie cutter Mexican. Now its got new style, new deliciousness and a sense of the Mexican market and the best Mexican kitchen at the same time. Maybe the best Mexican food in Boston.
I'm not sure if the place is under new management, or what, but it's completely different. The front part, which was where the atmosphere was, now appears to be a different entity entirely. It was too bright and empty- I think it might be the take out . Handwritten signs pointed top Ole being in the back room. There was little to no atmosphere back there. A fire at least made it look cozy but it was a 70 degree evening and made the room too hot. The menus were dirty. The guacamole is not made at the table anymore, but it was excellent. Of a party of 3, two of our plates were ok, the third was great (a steak plate special). The margaritas were mostly ice. T
The food is incredible and highly recommended. The ambiance is not what it was before the remodeling. We were seated in the take out part of the restaurant (in front) despite having had a reservation. The front lacks ambiance and is loud. We asked to be moved to the back and fortunately there was room for us. In the future, I'd request to be seated in the back restaurant. Or better yet, if not wanting a margarita (which are quite good), I'd just get the food to go.
Ole is apparently under new management. The prices seemed higher than before, but we had not been there in a while. It was practically empty on a Saturday night around 9. The guacamole was not good. It was made at the table and it was so loaded with salt and lime that you couldn't taste the avocado. They did take it off the bill. The rest of the food was ok. We were expecting the old Ole and were disappointed. They may improve with experience.
They have redesigned the bar area and down scaled the menu. I was looking forward to the old Olé and was disappointed. We were told we couldn't sit out back because of the heat so we had to sit out front which has no ambiance. This used to be one of my faces but no more.
We have eaten here for a number of years but didn't realized that the restaurant has changed hands. The menu is now very limited, the food is so-so (but the guacamole is still excellent) and the redecoration changed things for the worse. We were quite disappointed. There were only 3 other tables of people there. We could have saved a lot of money and eaten in the casual front of the restaurant. We won't be back, which makes us sad because we used to love it.
This is one of my Inman favorites and I have been going there consistently for a really long time.
The service is great and the ambiance very nice. Their margarita options and entire drink menu is awesome. I would only recommend them to offer more meatless options and more apps choices at the restaurant.
Real neighborhood gem with excellent service and great Mexican food. The menu is not long but everything we had was excellent, high quality, and reasonable portions. The staff were also helpful to us in choosing among 20 (!) kinds of tequila. Definitely recommended.
Ole used to be my favorite restaurant in the area, but over the last last few years they have made some pretty big changes. I am not a fan of the changes! The menu has been cut to less than half of what it use to be, and they didn't keep most of their best dishes (the dishes you can't get everywhere else). It's actually a totally different restaurant, that has a name that I used to love. Quite sad...
Very disappointing. I've been here once before and I raved about how great the food was. I came back bringing a friend we were so disappointed. Last time the salsa had a roasted tomato taste this time it was bland. The guacamole was too salty. They didn't have the pineapple juice for margarita so I tried a new one which was too smokey. The rest of the dinner was really not good. Unsatisfied with the food, the service was also slow and the ambience had changed. Before the room was dimly lit, now it's too bright. Lastly, there was a cat at the table... I mean I understand service animals but having a dirty cat a table where other people eat is absurd. That is not the fault of the restaurant though.
Used to love this restaurant, but they have slimmed down the menu to a handful of items and really killed off any sense of value. The food was no longer interesting and creative like it used to be - - they still have the super-high prices, though! $19 for 3 dry, americanized enchiladas was such a let-down! The table-side guacamole was made with unripened avocados, so it wasn't creamy, but rather chunky and grainy/chewy - - still $14 as before, just less volume. Plus both rooms were loud and kind of uncomfortable - both the restaurant in the back, as well as the relocated Olecito take-out counter and tables at the front. Such a shame!
The restaurant is now confined to the back room and the front has become the take out area. The front is airy with window tables looking out on the street and offering privacy. The back has a low tin ceiling and now has many rather bad and rather large paintings of Mexico.
While our dishes were delicious (other than guacamole made from a barely ripe avocado ) the new noise level and ambience are so bad that we won't go back. It's a shame the new owners made the decisions they did.
Ole used to be a favorite; we'd recommend it to ALL of our friends.

Food was meh, just not special anymore. Even the chips and salsa were generic.
For the money? A joke.
I used to spend $100 for a cozy table, an incredible menu and amazing drinks.
The old atmosphere was rich and classy, the former service warm and friendly.
This time, we had 2 drinks and a menu of tacos and enchiladas for $150, all to the tune of way-too-loud dance music, bad lighting, bad art, a terrible, moody server...we were standing for 20 minutes just trying to get out of there. Nobody took the hint. Nobody offered to comp dessert or anything after what was obviously a botched service. 90 minutes, folks. For tacos.
You're better off going to Painted Burro in Davis Sq where they're actually tying – and succeeding!
