Dine on a fusion of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine at Old Venice in Point Loma. This family-owned restaurant has a charming yet casual setting. Old Venice serves palate-pleasing appetizers like steamed mussels in wine sauce and parmesan breadcrumb-stuffed shrimp. A seafood risotto, honey-glazed salmon with sautéed seasonal vegetables and chicken Florentine make for fulfilling entrées. Pizza with a choice of toppings, delicious desserts and sandwiches can be found on the menu.
Old Venice has an outdoor patio and happy hour with live music. Its bar area serves beer, wine and specialty cocktails. This restaurant hosts and caters various events, including wedding ceremonies. It has daily specials and offers takeout services for guests who would rather dine at home.
My wife and I came here the day before Valentine's Day and had a wonderfully romantic meal by candlelight and soft lighting. The food was amazing. I had the shrimp and scallop fettucini and my wife had one of their vegetarian dishes. Both were perfectly prepared and delicious. This is a great romantic restaurant to take your girl to!
Had heard great things about this restaurant. Made a reservation through Open Table, but when we got to the restaurant, they didn't have the reservation. Obviously, since I'm writing this review for Open Table, I clearly did have a reservation. Not sure why it didn't get transmitted to the restaurant. The host gave us a little bit of a hard time about it, but they did have a table available for us, so they sat us. However, the table was on the back enclosed patio, which wasn't terribly warm. I commented about the cool temperature, but the host said only that the room would eventually warm up....it did, but it was quite a bit later. Not the most welcoming response from the host. The metal chairs were not the most comfortable. We sat there for about 15 minutes before we had to flag someone down to notice us, bring us water and menus. After that, the service improved, but the waitress did bring my friend a third glass of wine when my friend had clearly declined a third glass of wine. She drank it, but didn't really want it and we got charged for it. The food was good though. Not sure if I would go back to dine again, but I might if I was seated in the more posh dining room with the padded bench seats and chairs.
I made a reservation for a large group via Open Table and and received both a confirmation and and a reminder. Imagine my surprise when I showed up with a job candidate for an interview dinner only to find there was no table for us. The did ultimately work it out. The food is good and this is a great place, but don't book via Open Table since they seem to have not turned off their Open Table account - your booking won't go through.
It's been quite some time since my husband h I have dined here but that's only because we don't get to Point Loma very often. I made reservations for Restaurant Week about 2 weeks in advance because we had plans to attend a play downtown.
Upon entering the restaurant, I told the 3 guys at the front that we had a 5:45pm reservation. Well we stood there for a good 3-5 minutes while 3 young men tried to figure out where to seat us. The funny thing is that there were plenty of empty tables. I could tell my husband was getting annoyed/impatient because he had to move several steps away from the situation.
A highlight was their Lemon Drop martini. It had to be THE best Lemon Drop I've ever had. The Restaurant Week menu had a good variety, except for dessert. My chicken picatta, which I had high hopes for, was extremely salty. It had lots of capers, which I like & the sautéed veggies were yummy but you've got to hold back on the salt when capers are part of the dish because capers are salty themselves. My husband enjoyed his La Regina dish - seafood stew in a light tomato broth. Service was a bit slow & sporadic, even when the restaurant wasn't busy.
Overall Old Venice is a good restaurant but I like their sister restaurant Alexander's on 30th much better.
I made the reservation for a party of two for Thursday night during restaurant week at 6:45. We arrived one hour early because we wanted to have a drink in the bar before being seated. I checked in one hour prior and asked if it would be possible to sit in the covered patio. The hostess said she already had us selected for the covered patio dining. Happy, we headed to the bar. We closed out our bar tab and checked back in to the hostess stand. The hostess led us past the indoor patio that we were told we would be seated in, and directly to the outside patio. We were the only people out there. We were told it would be nice because the heater was on. Despite the "niceness" of the heater sitting outside on the UNCOVERED patio, we were told we had a table in the section with the covered patio. Being outside was not so bad, but we definitely did not get the service those inside did. Our server offered us bread, we watched her bring bread to her covered patio tables, yet, she was unable to get outside to us to deliver our bread. So, our bread came AFTER our appetizers. Our drinks were delivered later because of our location, our waters were not filled because of our location. Then, they sat a large table outside, and another table. Basically, the food was good as usual, but we were not given the service we would have had if our table was conveniently located inside, on the covered patio, like I was told we would get. I was a server for 13 years, so I understand the inconvenience of tables that are far away, separated by a door, when all of your other tables are inside. I also understand that Restaurant Week does not allow servers to give the type of attentive service that they usually would give. But, server/busser 101 is don't ask someone if you can take their plate while they are still eating. I shouldn't be asked "Can I take your plate", just because I put my fork down.
I will go again, but definitely not during Restaurant Week.
My husband and I decided to go out for lunch and try Old Venice during restaurant week. I would say first of all the food was very good - we had the torpedo sandwich and creme pasta as a main entree and the romaine salad and brussel sprouts as the first entree. Generous portions, and very delicious.
It IS very noisy despite not having a lot of people so the acoustics must be sort of weird in there. I had been there for dinner and it was packed and SO noisy that I could not enjoy my dinner companions. was hoping that lunch would be easier.
Our server/hostess seemed very inexperienced, however. Not sure if it was because she was doing double time as a hostess and a waitress, but we had to search for her to get water refills, etc.
Went for San Diego Restaurant Week as a Team lunch. Had the Insalata Venicia and the Linguini de Kathleen with the Gluten Free pasta option... both were good... although the pasta was quite oily... but it was good. Like to have the Gluten Free as an option.
We came in because we saw they were involved in restaurant week. We were pleasantly surprised at this neighborhood place so close to our home. We were seated outside and it was a little on the cool side, but they turned the heaters on and we were fine.
We had a female waitress that was very nice, and she took great care of us. The food was very good. We saw some other items on the menu we'd like to try.
We will be back!
Food was really tasty and our server was very responsive and attentive. We will be coming back again.
Had a nice dinner with family at Old Venice. Food was delicious, all of us enjoyed our meals. Service was excellent, very attentive. We will definitely be back.
We love the Combo pizza. We also love the GF combo pizza. Our kids and Grandkids love all the food. It's such a fun neighborhood eaterie. We have been a fan of old Venice for years.
We were a large group. Food was great. Service excellent. It was a memorable experience.
Atmosphere at Old Venice is cozy, warm inviting, casual and classy, perfect lighting. for starters, our Server recommended the magic mushrooms, sautéed shrimp and artichoke hearts, and insalade caprese for our table of six to enjoy. perfect! the staff took care of us, very attentive, with out being intrusive. La Regina, seafood with black linguini and white wine marinara, another recommendation, delicious! thank you Old Venice.
22nd anniversary dinner. We were seated in the back garden area and it was LOVELY. For "our occasion" this was MUCH more perfect than sitting inside at an "ordinary" table.
Ashley was a wonderful server, congratulated us on our anniversary as soon as she greeted us, it was fantastic.
Went for a romantic birthday dinner, and it was more than we could have hoped for. Wonderful service, very nice layout in a repurposed old house with a lovely terrace setting. Food was great and reminiscent of old Italy. Had the great fortune of arriving between 1600-1800, which was during their happy hour and consequently got all our appetizers half price. Will definitely tell friends and return!
We always LOVE Old Venice. Food never disappoints. We took clients to an 8pm dinner on a Thursday evening. Server was very cool, but for whatever reason, service was soooooo incredibly slow. Water refills were next to impossible and food all took an extra long time to come out. It wasn't that busy, so not sure what the problem was? We will always go back, and hopefully next time it will be a little better overall.
We were in San Diego on vacation and looking for an Italian restaurant. We could not have made a better selection . There were 7 of us and we all had excellent meals . The menu had many items and the portions were large. Out waiter was attentive and super friendly . This place is a gem! One of our friends is Italian and she is very particular about the food. She said it was the best Italian restaurant she ever ate at. I would absolutely recommend Old Venice.
We love this place !! Great food, service...we'll be back again!
Wonderful menu and wine list! Restaurant is well-decorated, gorgeous, tables are very close however. We sat close enough to another couple to feel like there was no privacy. Still an awesome experience and the food was outstanding
Looked online for an Italian restaurant in the area and came up with the Old Venice. The food was amazing. Service great. Patio quite and relaxing which was just whatever needed after a busy day. Will definitely be back.
Nice ambiance, but over priced. If there is one thing an Italian restaurant should be able to do well is Lasagna. The food was over rated, over priced. For a much better experience and excellent food go to Piatti in La Jolla.
I hadn't been to this restaurant in a long time, and was so happy to see that it was still as delicious and fun as I remember! I has forgotten how much I enjoy the back patio, and how yummy the garlic bulb and Brie tastes with the fresh garlic bread! Looking forward to going again soon!
We went at Happy Hour time, and it was wonderful. Not crowded. GREAT selection for
Starters and Salads......With wine, 2 starters, coffee, tax, tip. was just about $20.
Service was prompt and friendly.
Food was great! Inside looked like
it could use a paint job. And it was a little strange going from the main dining area to the outside area you had to walk through the kitchen prep area. Prices were reasonable and service was good. Overall I give it a B
Excellent pasta and service was outstanding. Mike Kossett at the bar was stellar
Good food, service should have been better.
Our server, Janela, was truly excellent. The other employees were also very attentive. The food was great. The drinks were good. Overall, it was great.
One negative- I put in the Open Table comments box that it was my wife's birthday and I guess that message never made it to the restaurant. Either Open Table failed or the restaurant failed but they never acknowledged my wife's birthday. I would like to know what went wrong. We live in the neighborhood so if the restaurant contacts me and lets me know whether it was their slip up or not will influence whether we return. BTW, it's OK if it was the restaurant's slip up. We did make the reservations via Open Table only about an hour before. I would just like some ownership of the issue. Thanks!
We noticed this restaurant in the Restaurant Week listing. We'd never heard of it; and decided to give it a try. What a find! Food was excellent; service attentive; food delicious. We'll be back.
The soup was delicious and the Carbonara Linguini was amazing!
This place is an awesome date place. I've already recommended it to some friends. Good atmosphere, friendly service, and the food is amazing. I couldn't ask much more out of a restaurant. I highly recommend the Magic Mushrooms for an appetizer
I chose this as it turned up in a list of Top ten romantic restaurants in San Diego. While it was good, it was quite hyped up. Ambience, music, menu are all ordinary (but not bad!) Path to outdoor seating is difficult and uncomfortable. Indoor seating is extremely noisy. Vegetarian options are too few. Overall not a romantic place for a date but definitely worth a visit otherwise
Our group always get together here at the same table. This time we were served by Andre, like always he was very good. We ate the great food that came from the kitchen and the chef Gus.
Great lemon drops martinis.
Used to be a great little neighborhood place with yummy food. Now the menu and execution is tired and bland. Service wasn't that good. I heard a couple tables around us complain about their food, and ours was not that great. The outside is still pleasant but nothing more than that. The wife said she'd go for apps and drinks. I disagree - no point in going back as there is nothing on the app list to write home about, and as for drinks...who even has Fetzer White Zin on their wine list anymore?! If you HAVE to go, it'll be ok, but make no special attempt to go here lest you be sorely disappointed.
My wife and I love the food at Old Venice and the outdoor patio. Inside is a little tight and noisy. I particularly enjoy the Spicy Roma Shrimp.
Been here many times . this time the waitress was snippy ,and the food was overdone . wasted three hundred dollars and two hours when I could have gone somewhere else and the atmosphere was not good .. Was here in May and loved it , will not return , down need to pay for bad service and bad food .
Great Apps! Baked Brie with garlic bulb with crunchy garlic bread was delicious! Pasta in the main dish was a little over cooked and chicken needed more seasoning/salt. Overall the service, apps and ambience makes it a place I would go back to.
Love this place - always have. I just wish they'd bring back their eggplant parmigiana for dinner. It was the best I've had anywhere!!
It has been a while since I have been to Old Venice (before the Open Table days actually) - I had a visitor who came to SD with his wife from LA, and I wanted to try this again.
The food is still very good, although I was hoping for their clam linguini - maybe they don't serve it anymore. But all of their pastas were quite good, their salads are delicious.
The only problem is that they did not seat us in a more quiet space despite my request via Open Table, and this is the only restaurant that did not do this for us. I saw other spaces that were quieter. I guess I could have spoken up but I did not.
I wish our server was a little more attentive. he did not come back to pour our wine or anything.
Reserved here on Honeymoon, and everything went so perfeft ! My wife really loved the food and the setup!! Definitely coming back!
We love this restaurant! Great food. Great atmosphere. One of my all time favorites!
However, we had a reservation for 9:00 and didn't get seated until 9:35. The hostess wasn't that great about communicating the delay. When you have babysitters for an evening night out this is a bummer.
