About Old Surrey Restaurant
The Old Surrey Restaurant is Surrey’s best well- kept secret. Built in 1918, it was the residence of Lou Jack and his household until it was converted into a restaurant in 1974.
The interior has a crisp, clean aesthetic that is enhanced by hardwood floors and the enlarged photos of historic Surrey that adorn the walls. There are five distinct dining areas on the top floor (including a cozy library) and a banquet facility downstairs. The cuisine is French with a splash of West Coast flare. A treat for new and seasoned guests alike are the signature dishes that are prepared and flambeed tableside.
The restaurant is family owned and operated since 1975. Since 1984 the restaurant has entered into a partnership with the family farm in Ryder Lake overlooking Chilliwack from the nearby mountains. The Old Surrey is well known for its free-range lamb and veal allowing customers to enjoy fresh organic ingredients.

Old Surrey Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
A Precious Gem in the Heart of Newton
My husband and I have passed this restaurant on numerous occasions, without ever having tried it. One thing to note, is that the parking is on the Enterprise side of the restaurant. We ended up doing a bit of a neighbourhood tour because we missed the parking lot the first time round, thinking it belonged to Enterprise.
Overall, we were very pleased with the quality and flavour of the dishes we ordered. We started with the sautéed shrimp, which was served deliciously hot and fragrant. This was followed by lamb for me and salmon for him. He was not that pleased with the amount of sweetness in the maple soy sauce, which he found reminiscent of eating a pancake vs. salmon, but I didn't try it, so I can't vouch for it myself. The plates arrived hot, the food was fresh and well presented. The rack of lamb was tender and plentiful. I enjoyed the potato croquets and the roasted beets, with the crunchy green beans.
We're trying to stay away from dessert, but the choices looked great - all veritably soaked in some sort of liqueur. It's been years since I've enjoyed a good cherries jubilee but I didn't try it. The thought of trying it will probably draw me back to this new old favourite sooner rather than later.
We didn't order wine, enjoying sparkling water instead. Due to having two attentive servers, our glasses did get filled with still water, but the server was very quick to bring a replacement bottle to fill our glasses up again. It's a nice old world touch when they brush up the crumbs between courses.
I found the old world charm and the delicious food well worth the higher than-Surrey-usual prices and would be happy to bring family and friends back again.
My wife and I were visiting Surrey from Ontario and decided to try this restaurant to celebrate her birthday. Boy are we glad that we did! Very nice atmosphere and excellent personal service. Spiro was very friendly and was genuinely interested in meeting us and sharing our life experiences. He even hand made our salads as well as carved and flamed our Chateaubriand. All of the food was amazing, and the personal service was the best touch. Fine dining at it's best!
We were given a gift certificate for this restaurant, and what a culinary experience! We have lived in the U.S. so are used to exemplary customer service, which is nigh impossible to find anywhere in Canada. Old Surrey Restaurant is the sole exception in the 10 years that we've lived back in Canada; the service is prompt but not oversolicitous, genuine, not stuffy (even though this is a fine dining establishment), and knowledgable. We had our caesar salad, nitro ice cream, and the House Coffee made table-side from scratch (yes, even the caesar dressing was made with a raw egg, real anchovies, and fresh garlic!). Their 4 course meal for $55 is a steal for what you get; real crab cakes, caesar salad, filet mignon & lobster tail, and nitro ice cream. The courses are the perfect size, with the exception of the caesar salad; it was a bit too big. I wouldn't bring babies, young children or even teens who are not mature enough to appreciate the food or the service. The parking is not great and neither is the neighbourhood, but you overlook that once you're ensconced inside this cozy jewel. Will definitely be back!!
We have not been to this restaurant for many years however a numbers of good friends highly recommended it. We treated some close friends to a retirement dinner and all of us were very impressed with the entire experience. We look forward to returning soon.
We had a delightful evening here celebrating my mother’s birthday. This is one of the few places that still has table service for things like Caesar salad, crepes suzette, and Spanish coffee. The price is high but the food and service are excellent. Treat yourself.
For a French cuisine, the tiniest details must be attended to. The "amuse bouche" was good, the escargot a disaster, salty and overcooked. The lamb meat and veggies were well attended. The sauce was lame - do you have a saucier (sauce chef)?
Service - should be right on time - delay with main course seeds doubt in one's mind. Head waiter, a veteran knows what he is doing - should be teaching the younger crew.
Advertise your wines - I liked the Okanagan/Kettle Valley choices. Reds were on track
In summary, attending to those small details would raise the rating a couple of notches. Not hard to do. I will come back to see if that happens. What a perfect setting with a quiet ambience.
The Old Surrey Restaurant is our favourite restaurant. The food is a taste experience and the service is superb. Our waiter, Spiro, is the very best. We always ask to be in his area. The winter dining package is always excellent - from the amuse bouche to the desert. We look forward to our next meal there.
Once again the Chef and staff did not disappoint. We introduced some friends to the restaurant for their first time and they were very impressed.
Service was excellent. We enjoyed the seasonal multi course menu and were not disappointed. Having your salad made to order at table side is always impressive, and the little touches such as the amuse bousch I makes it special.
Another great celebration was had! Truly a gem!
The Old Surrey House restaurant is one of my all-time favourites. It has a wonderful ambiance, old style table side service, classic cuisine beautifully cooked and locally sourced food. I highly recommend it for quiet, intimate dinners, romantic dates, and special occasions. Relax and prepare to spend some time enjoying yourself. Their special menus are excellent value with a number of varied choices for each course.
This is a fabulous special occasion restaurant. The food is exceptional and the service is outstanding. One of the rare restaurants where the prepare specialty items at your table - caesar salad, flaming cherries jubilee, flambe coffees. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing location to have an exquisite dinner, this is the place!
We go every year for my mom's birthday. This was our 5th year and her 83rd birthday.
Food is great - love the table side Caesar salad. Lamb's liver appt was exceptional.
Even though they asked if it was a special occasion it was not acknowledged.
For fine dining in Surrey this is the place to go.
Service is awesome.
Amazing service and food as usual. This is a great place to go for anniversaries and birthdays. It was my late Dad's and mother's favorite place to eat at for their anniversary, and now it's ours. If you can reserve the library room, I would highly recommend it. (Very cozy) Love the Mom and Pop restaurants.
We decided on this restaurant after receiving a recommendation from a work colleague. We met another couple there and chose it because we live on opposite ends of Greater Vancouver so we met in the middle. The recommendation did not disappoint-attentive service without being overbearing, well-cooked meals, generous proportions, good value and lovely setting in which we could hear ourselves converse. Will definitely go again. The other couple also enjoyed themselves and said it was worth the drive.
We had been to the restaurant 27 years ago when we first got married and returned recently for our anniversary. The lapse is due to several moves to different provinces. We recalled the restaurant as having excellent food and thought we would try it again. We ordered the four course dinner and it did not disappoint. Each course was delicious. Service was outstanding without being intrusive. Enjoyed watching the preparation of several dishes table side. Highly recommended. Will not wait 27 years to return.
Table next to us way to loud.Caesar salad was disappointing.
Others at exit were given their jackets, we were pointed to ours (made us feel like we were 3rd class)
I tipped 25% and I don’t really know why,I should have tipped 10%.
Even our chairs seemed lower grade than the ones others in our section sitting in,once again, felt like we stuffed into a corner like an inconvenience!
Will go to the Keg (or elsewhere)for all other future special occasions, never coming back here.
This restaurant has been in business for 43 years and is still owned and run by the same lovely couple. It has been a few years since my husband and I had been there but I dare say we’ll be back soon. The service is impeccable, the staff is very friendly and the food is fabulous! A five star experience and reasonably priced.
Cooking for a Chef can be difficult when all they can think about is what they would have done to improve the meal. Some of the food seemed a little bland or missing something to round out the flavor, namely the shrimp bisque. Overall it was a lovely experience.
My friend and I were pleasantly surprised with everything about the experience at this place. First we ordered the seasonal pack. Everything was delicious . 5 courses as well as a good size portion. The surroundings were very comfortable as well as the well informed servers. There was nothing there could I find not good. It was fantastic. Reminded me of the 70`s when service, food and the guests were #1. I have already told many of my friends and family of the this place and will be going back. I have worked in this business for 40 years or so and know a bit about the industry. There are so many times I have paid for food not fit to eat. I now have found a wonderful spot where my money will be well spent. Thank you very much
