IN 1983, Karl & Ursula Selinger of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, Germany in the Rhineland Pfalz opened The Old Stein Inn to serve the finest German cuisine. They decided to locate in Anne Arundel County just 8 miles south of Annapolis in Edgewater Maryland. The Old Stein has a traditional Biergarten to give neighbors a place to enjoy al fresco dining with friends and family. The ten German taps pour an unparalleled selection of beer. The Old Stein has been featured on "The Best Of Show" on the Food Network and has won multiple awards for the Munster Cheese & Crab Soup and the Apple Cheesecake.
The Old Stein is no run-of-the-mill chain restaurant. Diners come from all over the Mid-Atlantic (or right around the corner) to this family-owned, Maryland gem to enjoy fun, food, friends—and, or course, a cold brew in a gemütlichkeit atmosphere. Eins, Zwei, Drei, G"suffa!

Having lived in Germany for five years Maybe my expectations were high. The restaurant and bar are very much like they are in Germany. The beer selection is very good and the ambiance was good. My really only knock was the schnitzel. Schnitzel in Germany is about as popular as buying a hamburger here in the US. Most places in Germany it pretty much tastes the same. The schnitzel here was not very good. Had a little to much breading on it and I don’t think they pounded it. Overall I loved the atmosphere and would go back again, but I would try something else on the menu.

Wonderful restaurant! Great for family and friends. The Weiswurst is phenomenal and the German chocolate brownie is extremely indulgent but delicious! Perfect, relaxed yet fun environment with live music.

We visited Old Stein for Mother's Day this year as we have been to Old Stein many times and always enjoyed the atmosphere. Once again we were not disappointed. The German food was excellent and the service was great. On this particular day there was an accordion player who came to our table. We will definitely return!

First time visit was enjoyable. Dinner with my 97 year old mom. Was a little noisy for her as we were near a table with some folks who were having a great time. Food was tasty and the beer was great. Much better experience than I had at a DC German restaurant. I will definitely return! Got to try other items on the menu.

I cannot say enough great things about Old Stein. The food is superb. It's some of the best German cuisine I've had. The main menu is small, but that meant they could focus on doing fewer things exceptionally well. That being said, you have to check out their seasonal offerings. They change with the ingredients, and we almost always find something to rave about each season. The drinks are great, the live music is fun, the atmosphere is cozy: it just screams 'Gemütlichkeit' across the board. I can't wait to go back!

P.S. Perennial favorites include any schnitzel, but the Jaegerschitzel is a particular must-have. That sauce is the stuff of dreams. If you get the regular schnitzel, you might consider trying it 'Holstein-style.' A fried egg and two thin anchovy strips elevate the experience like crazy. And don't be thrown off by the 'Cordon Bleu' style. It's Bavarian ham and Muenster cheese. Still pretty incredible, especially with the chicken.

Fantastic place for lovers of German cuisine. Having discovered it earlier, this was our second visit. Having lived in Germany for two years, we found it to be as authentic as you can find in the States. Saturday night is always busy so reservations are strongly advised. Using open table to reserve was a great move. Old Stein even called us at home to confirm whether we wanted to sit inside or outside, a day prior to our reservation, and it STILL took awhile to get a table cleared. However, once we were seated, service was fantastic - enthusiastic and cheerful server made the evening. Its a bit out in the country (address says Edgewater but really closer to Mayo), but well worth the drive. One of our favorites when we are missing Germany.

Very nice atmosphere. Two bars but plenty of seating space to provide a nice restaurant feel. Food was well themed and presented well.

Our waiters demeanor made us feel as though we were setting at the bar. He was nice but acted like a bar hopper. This one thing colored our entire experience. We were there to celebrate mother's day and would have preferred to have felt more like a restaurant. This was the difference between a 3 and a 5 stars and the likelihood that we will return.

If you like German food, you owe it to yourself to check out the Old Stein Inn. They offer a seasonal selection of delicious, authentic German dishes, accompanied by beautiful wines and beers. The quality is excellent, prices are reasonable, and there are even a few choices for unadventurous types who only eat steak or burgers. There are several gluten-free options, and the chef is very cooperative about preparing off-menu selections. Would definitely recommend!

We met to celebrate a birthday and a get-together. We hadn't seen each other in ages. They are fans of German food so we tried Old Stein. Appetizer of liverwurst on toast points was excellent. I had Kassler Rippchen and the others had pork schnitzel and chicken schnitzel with red cabbage and noodles. All meals were excellent and we had to ask for boxes to take home. Portions are large enough for at least 2 meals. I'm not a beer drinker but the others had beer and said they were good.

Literally, the only thing that marred the meal was the coffee creamer was off, so the waitress took the coffees back and returned with heavy cream. Otherwise spot-on German (American) dining from somersausage to spätzle, to bauernwurst, to strudel- excellent dining experience, excellent staff. Good times!!

I love The Old Stein. I'm a first generation German American and it just feels like home to me.

The food is always good, the atmosphere is a blast and the staff are friendly. I do think the prices are a bit high for the food they are serving but I am willing to pay it because it's the only German place in the area. My only complaint would be that *SOMETIMES* even when not busy it can be hard to locate your server.

I hesitate to write this review, as I want this restaurant to be a german gem, however, me and my (German) girlfriend did not find the food very tasty. I had fish and chips and the fish was good, however the fries were what looked like the bottom of the bag. Lots of little pieces and nothing to write home about. My friends meal was missing the herb butter leeks, and her sauted veggies were just green beans on top. Very disappointing. The red cabbage was tasteless which was another big disappointment. I really want to love this place, but unfortunately the food just didn't do it.

We went for my son's birthday on St. Patrick's day. Atmosphere was nice and service quick. Very dissatisfied with the food. Ordered 2 8oz steak dinners. I'm almost 100% certain they took 1 8oz steak cut it in thin slices and divided it on 2 plates and charged us 21 dollars for each. The steak had no seasoning and just had a cold slab of herb butter thrown on top. Complete waste of money. Felt truly ripped off.
