Old Mill Room @ The Boar's Head Ratings and Reviews
As usual everything was excellent. I was a bit disappointed to note that there was not as large a selection of seafood and desserts as previously provided. On the other hand, everything presented was of high quality and the service was at its usual high levels of excellence without being obtrusive.
Definitely the in-place for Sunday brunch; almost a party atmosphere before noon; less noisy thereafter. Food on the line offered excellent and abundant choices not found elsewhere: loxs, multiple pastries, curried rice chicken, and great made-to-order omelet, etc. Even the coffee had distinctive flavor and body, unlike the everyday fare typically encountered. Truly delightful and extensive grounds in which to walk. Fairly steep price, but the Old Mill is in a class by itself. Evening dinner would be genuinely memorable for a special occasion.
It was our anniversary and we had friends visiting us for the weekend. We enjoyed the Sunday brunch and were impressed with the selection and quality of food as well as the attentiveness of food station and waitstaff personnel. You're paying for the high quality of food, ambience, and service @ $34.00 per person; however, worth it for this special occasion. We have also enjoyed quite dining and pub fare on previous visits.
Turns out the quickest way to secure reservations for the Old Mill Room is through Open Table. Thank you! We are regulars at the Old Mill Room for Sunday Brunch as well as for lunch and dinner, usually with friends from out of town. Service, quality of food, and access are consistently good. During our recent visit for lunch, we did notice that our particular server seemed new. While she was very accommodating, I think she was still getting used to her surroundings, restuarant offerings, and customers. I am certain that with a little experience she will soon be operating as efficiently as her colleagues.
Food was good, however, I thought the collaboration of food was a little odd. We had ham, lamb, fish, and spaghetti. No beef or chicken. There were plenty of desserts, but not the first thing chocolate. This is my third year eating there in April and it was probably my least favorite - only because of the selection. Just to reiterate, the food was good I was just a little disappointed in the type of food served.
Our reservation mentioned that we would be celebrating our anniversary, but no mention of this was made. It was a slow/quiet Tuesday night and no one was at the host stand at 6:30 to greet us. After waving down a server we were finally acknowledged. Table service was friendly and attentive. Our server put in for the wrong shrimp appetizer but it was no big deal other than being an entree size portion. Most of my dinner came home with me after enjoying the very filling shrimp and grits appetizer. Worth a go for the ambience but nothing in particular about this visit compels me to make it a stand out among the many great choices in Charlottesville.
As strange as it sounds, one doesn't really come here for the food, but for the good service and very nice atmosphere. It's a great place for an leisurely meal at a restaurant that has good parking and lovely grounds. I did see that they've eliminated a doorman. Shame. For a place that has pretensions of character, one would think they'd own that amenity. Overall, a nice experience.
The Old Mill Room was exactly as advertised and didn't disappoint. The food was delicious - my husband enjoyed the sea bass while I savored every bite of my vegetarian entree ( polenta cake with mushrooms ) . We shared the Banana bread pudding for dessert. Great wine list as well- they even have 1/2 bottles available.
We love coming for lunch It is a wonderrful, memorable time and our waiter Eric was fantastic and so attentive, as all of the wait persons are. We love to celebrate birthdays . We can't wait for our next visit. The atmosphere and service makes one feel so special. Also, the Bread Pudding and Whiskey Sauce is superb !!!!
Bobby Lakin and I came every year for his birthday, for the brunch, for a night or two then off to the Skyline Drive. Today's visit was special with my son Paul because I won't be here with my husband again ; he passed away 5/7/2016. Your fine dining and hospitality were among the highlights of our 16 year marriage. Today we celebrated all of this on a beautiful Sunday. Lezah Lakin
We made a reservation on my Wife's birthday. So the reservation occasion question was answered "Birthday" The bass and trout were OK, nothing special. The dessert Brule & lemon bliss were dissappointing for $10. We thought they might write happy birthday on the dessert plate.........they didn't.
The service/waitress was great.
We stayed at the lovely Boars Head Inn and had dinner 2 nights at the Old Mill Room - both were fabulous! The ambiance of all of their dining areas is perfect, and the service was friendly and (just the right amount of) attentive. For our entrees, we ordered the scallops, the salmon, the sea bass, and the duck breast - all were excellent. I think my favorite was the duck breast which was cooked to a perfect medium-rare and served with the best "appley" braised cabbage I have ever eaten - the perfect accompaniment to the duck. We also ate at the Old Mill Room every morning for breakfast - wide choice of items all made to order and beautifully presented. I highly recommend the Old Mill Room!!
This was the first time I had brunch at the Old Mill Room at The Boar's Head. The food was outstanding for brunch. The had so many choices. It is a little pricey but I was meeting a friend I had not seen in a long time and it was a perfect place to meet for brunch. The staff was wonderful and attentive. It is not so noisy that you cannot have a conversation, which is perfect. Make sure you take a walk around the grounds and down by the pond. It is just gorgeous. It really is a hidden gem in Charlottesville.
The service was superb. The wine glass was never empty and the interaction with the wait staff was cheerful and sincere in their desire to please. Our waiter did one very unique thing which I have never seen before...he backed away from our table a few steps still facing us before turning to walk away. It was an unusually nice touch and he did it every time he came to our table. This was our first visit and we will certainly return. I had the pork chop and Sue had the trout. Both were perfect. We shared the beef cheeks as an appetizer. The bread is artisan and superb. The bill was a little over $200 for the two of us and we drank well. So, it is a bit expensive, but worth it for a special date night dinner. The entrees were mostly in the mid $30's.
When in the process of moving from California to Charlottesville in the past year or so, we've stayed at the hotel many nights and have eaten in the Old Mill Room often....just a great evening, always. last April, over excellent Crown Royal and Seven drinks in the bar, we debated and decided on which house we wanted to buy. That was the night we started to put down roots in Charlottesville, so it's kind of a special place! Now almost a year later, it's fun to return for a delicious dinner, but as "locals" now! Our server this past Saturday night was Emily- she had just the right pace for the evening....leisurely but attentive.
Have been to the Boar's Head numerous times and have have always enjoyed the classic Old South experience and the wonderful buffet lunch. We drive 2 hours to get there. This latest lunch there was not very satisfying however. The food was just OK, nothing special at all. The potatoes for example were cooked in their skins and they were mush, pure mush. There were two soup which looked and tasted like the other. There were three meat dishes one of which was pork belly- pure fat. The chicken and fish dishes were just alright something any amateur cook could have thrown together. All the dishes were very common tasting. Nothing exceptional in the meal and nothing to drive 2 hours for. We were disappointed.
I was a bit annoyed that we showed up thinking Sunday there was the brunch buffet and lunch option (as per the website) only to be told we had to order off the buffet and there was no lunch menu option. However, the buffet itself was very delicious. I don't eat pork or shellfish so my meat options were substantially limited and thus the value (bang for my buck) was less, however the rest of my group was very happy to sample all of these.
