The menu at the Old Lyme Inn’s restaurant and bar offers guests traditional comfort food with a modern twist.
Since its opening in April 2012, the restaurant has quickly become a celebrated meeting place for visitors and locals alike. Hailed by critics and customers, our chefs work diligently to offer dishes that run the gamut from traditional selections to unique options that will challenge the way you think about food.

Inn was very nice, food was very good and portions were ample.
Staff appears to be pretty raw for a resturaunt of this price range,
stacking dishes, dropping utensils, "always how are you guys doing"
fumbling with dishes and who got what. Not terrible but should have been much more professional.
I would go again but probably just eat in the tavern section.
The fact that we were arriving at an upscale restaurant on a Saturday night and the restaurant was relatively empty should have been a warning to turn around and run the other way.
Staff was poorly informed as to preparations and choices on the menu gave bad wine recommendations, and when we asked about the jazz club and what was being featured the waitress knew nothing about it.
Two people in our party ordered steaks, one medium one medium rare.
They were given to the wrong person mine which was supposed to be medium was raw in the middle.
Clearly by Shoddy service no point in complaining just never go back.
Stay away and spend your hard-earned cash elsewhere.
Originally we had a reservation for Valentine's Day based on the menu we had previewed at a gallery reception.
Canceled going back to Cafe Routier where you always get a good meal.
Very lovely inn. The food was excellent. We all have the fig salad with prosciutto and it was really great. Service was quick and friendly. Would return in the spring where it will be a bit warmer. The room was a little cold but I think it is because it is an old inn and the temp outside was 5 degrees.
We loved everything about the Old Lyme Inn except the service. My friend and I met there for a late lunch on a weekday afternoon, and the dining room was lively but not overly busy. We were completely ignored by wait staff and finally had to ask if we could please place an order. The food was delicious but the service was so poor as to be distracting and overall took away from our enjoyment of the afternoon.
First, the greeting we received upon our arrival was not overly friendly. When our waiter arrived, he was pleasant but his appearance (and the appearance of other personnel) was rather sloppy. We asked for a carafe of water and it never came. On the bright side, the winter salad we shared was delicious — but the kitchen didn’t separate the salad for us (as most other restaurant do). We were never offered ground pepper. The rolls were fresh, but nothing special and the butter was foil wrapped (not an attractive presentation). When our entrees came, my lobster pie (basically bisque with a bit of pastry floating on top) was tasty, but the salmon was over cooked and tasted old. The smoked tomato sauce was overpowering. I would not suggest this dish. We had a coupon for free dessert — bananas foster (very nice). Frankly, we will probably not return — several other area restaurants offer much better food, service, and atmosphere for comparable prices. I hope management considers stepping up the service end of things — appearances do matter in this business.
If it wasn’t for the hilarity of the horrible service, the evening would have been a huge disappointment! So many gaffs, we lost count! Obviously, that evenings waitstaff received NO TRAINING. Guests talked among themselves about their frustration with the service!
-we asked what was in the seafood burrito-our waiter had not a clue and to spare him further embarrassment , we ordered another entree. Five minutes later the table next to us asked him the same question, with the same response. Then, that table received their salads AND entrees at the same time! The guests remarked that they had never seen that kind of presentation, but it was obvious that they sensed the service would only go downhill from there.
-twenty minutes after finishing our entrees, we left our table and asked the waiter for two coffees and the desert menu. His response was “and what would you like to drink?” Fifteen minutes later one coffee with no sugar or cream OR desert menu arrived. However, the entree menus remained on our table!
-two guests were seated and handed menus-to their surprise they were immediately served with salads that were meant for another table! Wrong meals were served to almost half the tables that night! At this point we were doubled over with laughter and the guests at that table informed us that the joke in town was that the food was great at The Old Lyme Inn-but service has always been abysmal!
We can’t imagine how much it cost to renovate this beautiful show piece, but what a waste to forget that with poor service that money was not well-spent.
The only bright spot that evening was the manager Terry who apologized graciously. She is the only reason we would ever again consider spending our hard-earned dollars here! The Kitchings were supposed to “save” this gem? Perhaps instead of focusing on the music, some attention should be to hire and train competent wait staff. Remember, guests will tell a few about good service, but tell tenfold of bad service.
This is a favorite venue of my husband’s and mine by virtue of the creative menu, excellent food (best fries anywhere— though they have upscale choices as well), and a great adjacent jazz club (The Side Door).
Intimate and featuring talents well known and upcoming, The Side Door has the hip vibe of a classic NYC underground spot but without the smoke and 3 hour drive. Unique too is that the site is an historic Inne and across the street from a world-class museum so it’s fantastic for a weekend getaway. There is a fire pit outside beside which it is lovely to enjoy pre-meal cocktails and in summer there is ample outdoor seating.
The restaurant could stand to add some serious sound dampening in the dining room for the rush leading up to shows, as well better training of wait staff, but neither ‘drawback’ is enough to dampen what is an an otherwise fun, vibrant, and tasteful /tasty destination.
We went on a Saturday night when a high school reunion was was also enjoying the inn. This made for a much noisier environment than one would normally expect, but everyone was having fun and this made for a happy atmosphere.
We sat in the bar and enjoyed leisurely service. The grilled apple salad, the duck and the swordfish special that evening are all excellent. Everything was cooked as we had ordered.
When our server was not familiar with some of the new Fall menu, she quickly would speak with the kitchen staff and return with a detailed description. The inn's owner stopped by each table to check about our dinner and evening - a very nice and appreciated gesture.
We will return.
Thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance, live trio playing soft drums, bass fiddle and piano and the waiter was delightful! Food arrived promptly and was delicious. Brought a friend there for her birthday and waiter was kind enough to bring a slice of cake with a candle. Highly recommend sitting by the outside fire with a cocktail then heading in for dinner. We took advantage of the Mid-Week Medley/Chef Selects.
It was the first day of the Fall menu at the Old Lyme Inn. My friend ordered the short ribs, which the waitress said are a favorite with the restaurant's customers. I ordered the duck because and asked for extra sauce anticipating it may be dry. They brought some on the side. It wasn't needed. the duck was moist, tender and delicious. Definitely recommend trying out the new menu.
The quality of ingredients is excellent. The chicken and mash potatoes were greasy. The grilled asparagus salad would have benefited from more simplicity. There was just too much going on. The steak and rice were very good as was the desert. The dining area is charming.
Some friends and I shared a lovely meal on the patio of the Old Lyme Inn this past weekend. The ambiance was perfect -- tiny lights stung from tree to tree across the dining area, a fire pit burning off to the side with people gathered around enjoying cocktails, tables of folks laughing and chattering... We each started with an interesting handcrafted cocktail, all of which were tasty. We then moved straight to dinner with two of us choosing the pan-seared salmon served over basmati and sugar snap pea rice with black bean/corn/pineapple chili. Our third friend chose a beet, apple, avocado frisee salad with added protein. All the food was great. The biggest disappointment was that we had ordered a bottle of wine when our food was served. However, the staff was so busy with other diners that our wine never arrived, despite several reminders. When they finally apologetically came over to see if we still wanted the wine (probably 20-30 minutes later), we had all finished our meals. We each ended up just ordering a glass while we sat waiting for the check. Much to our surprise, our glasses or wine were not comped. Not good service to our minds. Overall, it left us with a negative feeling to what otherwise would have been a lovely evening.
I dined early around 5:00 so a few people arrived after I did; but when I finished my meal, many more people arrived around 6:00. Menu choice was varied with some very special preparations that made the eating experience quite enjoyable. The appetizers, soups, entrées, and desserts were certainly up to my expectations. I am from Ohio and if I ever visit the vicinity in the future, I will choose the Old Lyme Inn again.
