Old Hickory Steakhouse at the Gaylord Texan Ratings and Reviews
If only the food was good, would fix the problem that not only me but pretty much everybody that goes to this restaurant experience. They should have aged steak for the price we are already paying and not the average steak that can be served at Texas Roadhouse for example. They really need to step up their game.
An excellent dinner for two. It wasn't cheap, but - unlike many expensive restaurants - was worth the cost. The beet salad was excellent, as was the Caesar, which was complete with anchovies. The nicest surprise was the Octopus starter: crispy on the outside and - on the inside - about as tender as any octopus I've ever had, world-wide. My girlfriend and I shared a Farms 44 bone-in ribeye - it was huge. The steak was cooked perfectly (we requested medium-rare), and was very good, but not excellent: just a little too much gristle. The sauces (we tried béarnaise and peppercorn) were sublime. We couldn't fit in dessert. I've saved the best for last. The service was really good, and in particular our waiter was wonderful: welcoming, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly without being too forward. We observed that he treated other tables just as expertly as he did ours. He was the ultimate professional and the restaurant should consider him their "MVP".
The serving crew was excellent. I ordered the Piedmontese Ribeye. The flavor was good but as the server explained, this cow was bred to be less marbled. Most people I know (self included) like a ribeye because it is marbled. If you don't want marbled, get a filet. My wife and I were pretty much in agreement on this. I would have gotten the Cowboy but it was too large. So, good meal but for a ribeye, go traditional.
Food was average, definitely not worth the price. Waiter was stretched thin. We wouldn’t see him for 10-15 minutes at a time, which wasn’t his fault. Medium rare steak was cooked to well done. Risotto was over cooked and mush and came out to the table 10 minutes after the steak and sides.
We have come for our anniversary for the last 5 yrs. Disappointed in the before dinner bread assortment and desserts. Didn't think the steak was worth the price and I couldn't eat the bigger steaks. I better dessert selection before. Bill was significantly higher than last visit, and we had dessert then. The other times we were there they made a mention of our anniversary, nothing said this time. Over all disappointed, then we will go somewhere else next year.
The prices have gone up significantly from the last time we dined there. And the quality did not follow the increase in prices. I had the boneless ribeye and it was no better than the sirloin steak I enjoy at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant. And of course, the price is much cheaper. Whoever supplies the steaks is not providing the prime steaks that you expect for $50-plus. My wife had the cod and she was not impressed by that dish either, saying the fish had little flavor/taste. Her sister had the lamb, and she really liked the lamb. We all (3) I was expecting at least a wedge of cheesecake at the very least.decided to share the "cheesecake" dessert. When it arrived, it was served in a broken top spherical chocolate shell. Inside was a piece of cheesecake the size of a $0.50 cent piece. The three of us barely had enough to taste the cheesecake. And the price was a whopping $12!
The food was excellent and our service was great and would recommend anyone give this place a try, service when we arrived was not very good, not the most polite and left us standing thinking we were about to be seated which actually took 15 minutes after our reservation time, even though there were plenty of empty tables! while the prices are on the high side and the greeting was not the best, the food and table service makes it worth a visit for that special occasion
11th yr to eat there and this was the worst tasting that we remember. The ambiance and the service is excellent but the steak was sub par. We have had steak here that was excellent, but this time it was tough and overpriced. I dont think we will return for a 12th yr.
Service was outstanding. We were there on Christmas Eve and it was super crowded so they had to take in customers even 20 mins before the closing time. However the services and the waiters were superb and magnificent! We really enjoyed the dinner experience there. However the foods were just average. We ordered a rib-eye on medium-rare but it was a little overcooked and tasted dry. Lobster portion was small and over-priced but very delicious.
Overall was nice experience. Good for special occasions or if you are just looking for some places nice to dine in.
We take our family to dinner every Christmas Eve and decided on Old Hickory this year, as my husband and I had dined here previously and were very impressed. We booked a table for 6 and were delighted to be given a round table upon check-in. The staff is amazingly helpful and efficient, but unfortunately this is where the quality ended for us. I'm not sure if prices were raised for the holiday or what, but the portion sizes of the entrees and appetizers had diminished significantly, yet priced the same...frustration started to set in! The chilled seafood tower was our biggest disappointment. We ordered it for 4 and honestly the one that my husband and I had had previously for 2 was larger? Yet cost us almost three times as much. The shrimp also were covered in some odd, slimy sauce this time around...not good. The sides that came with the steaks were smaller, the steaks themselves were smaller and the cheese plate appetizer that we purchased for eight was a waste of money for portion size. Also, we ordered two bottles of wine, which had gone up in price significantly since our last visit. Coffee was not hot, espresso tasted like regular coffee, desserts were small...sigh! We left after spending more than $1k+ vowing we were done with this spot for a while. Very disappointed with everything except our servers and the gentleman at the wine bar upstairs! Get your act back together Old Hickory or you've lost us for good!
Unfortunately I cannot leave a positive review. We come to Old Hickory every Christmas season. This year the food was just absolutely subpar. The shrimp on the cocktail and the seafood tower were pinkish grey and slimy. My beet salad was just average. The mushroom risotto tasted like white rice with mushroom soup. My son’s steak was below average. Service was absent. Had to pour my own water and received dried out limes. The dessert was nice. We will not go back. Very sad because we have many happy memories there and the food and service used to be 5 Star. This was like an Outback with Capital Grill prices.
Filet mignon was tough and over cooked. Waiter suggested cod to my wife which she ordered. She also ordered risotto thinking it was a side to the cod as a main dish. Waiter did not point that out to her and just brought her a risotto main dish. He was not attentive, just going through the motions.
Overpriced for just adequate food restaurant is nothing special for being touted as the best inside the Gaylord Texan Resort Hotel.
Suggest you go into Grapevine and have a nice meal with excellent food at a reasonable price
We have made Old Hickory our special place to go on our anniversary. We have dined at the restaurant every year since the Gaylord Texan has opened. This year two things happened that has made us think that next year we will look else where for our anniversary dinner. First they did not have our table, this had become a very special little spot for our dinner. Staff said they had a large party to accommodate so our table was not available, in the past we did not have to ask for the table, it was set aside for us by staff. Second the service this year was not what we usuals experienced. Service was slow, I had to ask twice for a glass of wine, it just seemed that staff was just not into taking care of our table.
Steaks were good but soooo overpriced, as was everything. Steaks are easily $60...just for the steak a la carte, sides and salads are extra! Very few options for sides, very few green vegetables, terrible appetizer selection; every one was seafood or shellfish except for carpaccio or the tableside cheese tray...which also had few choices...not even a gruyerre or smoked gouda...we were hard pressed to find 3 cheeses, so we chose 2 and supposedly got "extra" of each of the two. And I couldn't get a decent chardonnay to save my life. Finally...dessert...we were offered cheesecake, which we would have loved...what we were served was a giant chocolate egg that our waiter poured hot chocolate sauce over, and in the middle of all this chocolate was a tiny "crustless medallion" of a cheesecake-like mousse. If we had wanted chocolate and more chocolate we would have ordered the chocolate cake...the chef's very unique interpretation of "cheesecake" should have been described to us by our server prior to ordering. Overall, a waste of over $200. I would not return nor recommended.
