Old Fisherman's Grotto Ratings and Reviews
Old Fisherman's Grotto has bevome our favorite restaurant. My wife and celebrate twice. I served in the US Army from 1968 to 71. We also celebrate our Wedding Anniversary 11-11-11, at 11 o'clock! Old Fisherman's Grotto has made our celebration so special with there kindness and generosity. Fast service and the food is always fresh, hot, delicious. Let's not to forget the deserts! They are fabulous. Thank you again for honoring all the Veterans and Thank you for making use feel so welcomed.
Food was excellent, service was stellar. Local residents especially, are treated like royalty. The only complaint, and it is not the fault of the restaurant, is that it will probably cost to park and I a pet peeve of mine is having to pay to park. Two hours are free for locals but generally, it takes more than 2 hours if you relax and enjoy your meal. If you skip a before dinner drink, you can probably make the 2 hour time limit.
By far the most professional and outstanding service I have ever had from any restaurant. The owner even made sure to stop by everyones tables to check on your service. Beyond having a lounge with a nice bar to wait in before being seated, the complementary starters were a nice touch. Being a seafood establishment, it was nice to see a second menu for the freshest items that had arrived within the past 3 hours, although everything has arrived within the past 8 hours or sooner. Lastly, the keylime pie from their deserts was likely the best pastry I have had from any desert menu.
We were celebrating our anniversary and had requested a window table. Upon our arrival we were seated promptly and noted the special table decorating touches and candle recognizing our special occasion. Our server, Janeatte, promptly congratulated us on our anniversary, took our wine order and discussed the menu options. Once we'd ordered, we enjoyed a pair of sea otters right below our window and shared memories of our wedding. The crab cake appetizer was delicious as was the Captain's Plate paired with a delightful Cabernet. Since we were quite satisfied, we were surprised when Janeatte delivered a artfully presented cheesecake for our anniversary! It seemed too beautiful to actually eat -- my wife took several photos -- but we bravely consumed every delicious bit!
We've always enjoyed our dining experiences here and this was no exception. Our booth was almost private with a perfect view, and quiet enough for comfortable conversation. Janeatte was cordial, attentive without being intrusive, efficient and perfectly delightful. At the end of our meal, the owner stopped by our table to congratulate us and to make sure everything had been to our liking. This is a quality establishment with seasoned, friendly kitchen and wait personnel -- some have been there for thirty years -- great food, a warm ambiance and an impressive view. We can't recommend it enough!
Excellent service our waitress was spot on when to come to the table and when not to. The drinks appetizers and meal courses were brought out with good timing between them. Management gave our table of 4 a free appetizer which in itself was really good. Staff was accommodating on special request. All in all a really good place to go right on the wharf in Monterey with a good scenery, friendly and efficient staff and good food!
Definitely a place we'll go back to.
We have been there a few times in the past but this trip was the best! Our waitress Karen was awesome! The Executive Chef prepared us a great complimentary appetizer with artichokes, grilled shrimp and calamari. Best dining experience we have had in a long time. Can't wait to come back to Monterey.
Our server was excellent and guided us through the menu and made many suggestions. We ordered the grilled artichoke appetizer and got a bonus from the chef of a few delicious large prawns and some calamari which was excellent. The clam chowder is very decedent, rich and delicious. Abalone was very good. The Cheesecake and bread pudding were both great. I highly recommend this restaurant as they are very consistent and the food is outstanding. Great ambiance also for a tourist area. Will come back soon.
We had a wonderful experience from beginning to end. As requested, we had a window table. Our server was enthusiastic and gave us prompt attention without being overbearing. We told him we wanted to relax and enjoy a slow dining experince. We ordred a second cocktail, and he brought out a complimentary appetizer tray. We had viewed a couple of special appetizers, so ordered them as well. The entrees were delicious, and we enjoyed the meal with a nice
bottle of Rombauer chardonnay, a favorite of mine. A nice finish to a fabulous evening was when the server brought out a beautiful long-stemmed rose. We especially like the restaurant's policy on small children. Nothing can spoil an evening more than having a screaming child nearby.
One of the best dining experiences I have ever had. My wife and I had reservations at 8:00 pm and we were seated just as soon as we arrived. We were seated at a table with a fabulous view of the Monterey bay. Our waiter was knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. We decided to split a bread bowl of clam chowder and it was fantastic. As an appetizer we ordered the oysters Rockefeller and they were the best I have ever had. We ordered the surf and turf for our entrees and it was outstanding. Our server allowed us ample time to finish each course and we did not feel rushed at all. Overall it was a fantastic dining experience.
We were greeted and seated immediately upon entering, with a "reserved" sign
at our table...how often does that happen?? Great service, almost too much. They
truly aim to please. Wonderful seat/booth by water. Almost all seating has a view.
Everything you could ever want on the menu.
Exceptional Customer service. Excellent cuisine with a Cozy atmosphere. Every customer was greeted personally by the Manager. We were given a free appetizer. Our Server Joel was the best. He made sure we were well taken care of. All the Ladies in the restaurant were given a red rose upon departing the restaurant. What a GREAT EXPERIENCE and GREAT Team. Thank You
Abalone at lunch was a disappointment, as was the chowder. It was as though the kitchen tried too hard to make something that could have been better if simpler. Returned for dinner the next night and had a crab Louie salad that was superb, as were the complimentary appetizers. The service here is great.
We heard that this restaurant discourages small children; no high chairs; big sign in front that makes it clear this is place caters to adults searching for a quiet, subdued atmosphere. This is a big positive for a couple that tires of listening to whining children while trying to have a night out.
The service was attentive, but not overly anxious to see us make our selections. There are plenty of options on the menu from which to select. Meals were correctly prepared and came hot and flavorful. Overall, a very pleasant experience. We will be back.
The Old Fisherman's Grotto on the wharf in Monterey is a wonderful place to experience delicious seafood. The menu is extensive and the food is well prepared. Additionally, the wait staff is attentive, polite and efficient. Unfortunately, babies and small children are not welcome because it is fine dining. Some may be offended by this policy.
This restaurant's atmosphere was quiet, romantic light setting, excellent service, delicious food worth paying for. I went on my birthday and the owner was present. He greeted me at the door. My wife told him it was my birthday. One hour later, as we are ready to leave, they give me a complementary New York Cheese cake with a candle lit to express their appreciation of my birthday and to heighten the romance between me and my wife. I recommend this restaurant. They have the best clam chowder and customer service that I have experience in all of my dining experience.
We've been coming to the Monterey Peninsula for decades, and this is still our favorite restaurant overall. The fresh seafood, ambience, service & wine list are all incredible. As seniors, we really appreciate the policy of no screaming babies or kids and they even discourage cellphones. Makes for a truly delightful dining experience in today's hectic world!
