One of the best meals I have had,
food was amazing (goat cheese + beet salad, clam chowder -the one loaded with shrimp+crab meat-, seafood pasta, tiramisu as desert), service was excellent (fast and very kind), atmosphere is great -overlooking the sea, and the price was actually less than I had expected (115 before tip, including two glasses of high-quality wine) for such an excellent meal and experience.
I would highly recommend to anyone!

Great dinner. Traveled from Texas to Oakland and drove down the coast and stayed in Monterrey for the night. Old Fisherman's Grotto was recommended on all websites as the best place to eat and also recommended by hotel manager. It was an absolutely great experience. The greeters were so nice and told them we were from Texas and that a friend that lived close by was able to join us for dinner. I then said hello to who I believe was the manager or owner and he was also very nice and appreciative that we were dining there. And then to our surprise, we received a complimentary appetizer combo plate which I'm sure came from him. The food, wine, and view were incredible. When my wife and I ever return to Monterrey, we will probably eat at Old Fisherman's Grotto for lunch and dinner. Thank you for the "Texas" hospitality we received in California. We shall never forget it.

We had the house special caprese salad, clam chowder, cioppino and their ultimate seafood pasta. They are all excellent in generous portions. Nice desert, too. Beautiful atmosphere with views overlooking Monterey Bay. Very friendly service. It's a great place to enjoy a dinner, especially on a special occasion. It was our 50th anniversary.

What an amazing experience! The greeter, the waiter, the ambiance, the attention to detail, the excellent food - everything exceeded our expectations. We celebrated our wedding anniversary at the Grotto. We will return and tell our family and friends how fabulous the experience was!

We have been going there for years and it just gets better every time! Staff is very courteous and friendly, delicious meals with plenty of local choices, sustainable seafood dishes and conversationally compatible attractive ambiance. We took east coast visitors there on Sunday and they were greatly impressed

We love the Grotto!! Hosts and hostesses are welcoming, the waiters, especially Joel and Giovanni, are outstanding, and the menu is flawless! We are always treated like family. The wine list is comprehensive and affordable, and the ambiance can't be beat. Don't miss the desserts; they are a special treat! We recommend going to Old Fisherman's Grotto...you will not be disappointed!

The food and service were great! It was too much food(like so many places) but I didn't have to eat it all. I would prefer smaller portions, even at the same price. I like quiet competent waiters who are helpful, obersevant, and not overly friendly. The restaurant is located in a tourist spot and we were definitely tourists but I think people that like good food, especially seafood, would find this place attractive. It has an old fashioned vibe that was appealing to me and my companion both in our late 60s.

We loved Old Fisherman's Grotto in Monterey, CA. When we walked in the door we were greeted by two hosts AND the owner! We were given a lovely table overlooking the water. We love their policy on children; no strollers, no high chairs, and no unruly children; if a child is unruly, the family will be asked to leave. Overall, we were treated like VIPs, including a large complimentary appetizer tray. The food was delicious and the service was first-rate. We will be returning.

Love the Frank Sinatra music. Mixed Appetizers now include shrimp which is great. Fish and Chips always perfect and not greasy;portion seems smaller but it was too much before to finish even for me.

I was expecting a Tourist trap. Was I surprised. We were greeted at the door by the owner. Our meal was superb. At the end of the meal, the women in our party were handed roses. The waiters came and shook our hands and thanked us for eating there. I have eaten in some very fine restaurants and I have never experienced service as I did at Old Fiserman's Grotto. I had the macadamia nut crusted halibut, my partner had the scallops, our friends had the Crab stuffed pretzel with cheese and jambalaya. It was decadent. The dessert was beautifully presented and was a delicious as it looked.

This is a throwback, in the best way. On Fishermans Wharf, with harbor views, with cozy booths you’ll find fresh seafood prepared traditionally or with an up to date twist. Charming service.

Well worth a visit, the view from the window was lovely. Their boast of their clam chowder being the best was true; I tasted a number on the Wharf on my way to the restaurant! Food excellent.

We enjoyed an early dinner at Old Fisherman's Grotto. We each had a lovely cup of clam chowder. It was thick and flavorful. It was much bigger than I could finish knowing I ordered an entre. The wine selection didn't have anything that I enjoyed. We ordered something from the waiters recommendation, but it was more like a dessert red than a Zinfandel. I would much prefer bringing my own bottle in the future. I had the surf and turf. I know the cooks vary, but this time when I asked for a medium rare steak, it was very rare. It was more raw. My date had a lovely fish and rice dish that was cooked to perfection. We were to full to order anything off of the dessert menu, but they all looked delicious. They sent me off with a beautiful long stem rose.

Thank you for an upscale evening dining experience we will treasure until our next vacation. We started dining at Old Fisherman’s Grotto as freshman in college at CSUMB in 2008, we loved dressing up and having a “grown up” dinner date! It has now been 11 years since our first visit. We celebrated our college graduation there as well as our engagement and took our family there to announce our first baby! The Grotto has always held a special place in our hearts and we will continue to visit every time we are in Monterey, it wouldn’t be a complete experience without a delicious dinner on the water! Always great service too! Than you!

My wife and I were seated promptly even though we arrived early for our reservation. Our meal began with a complimentary appetizer. Our waiter was very attentive, but was not intrusive. Our meals arrived in a timely manner and were delicious. My macadamia nut crusted halibut was excellent. The fish was very fresh and moist and the plating beautifully done. Lastly was a slice of New York cheesecake to share. All in all, a very enjoyable evening.

Food, service and atmosphere are excellent. We dine at the Fisherman’s Grotto at least four times a year for special occasions and sometimes just when we want a great meal. We have lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 40 years and The Grotto is one of our favorite restaurants.

It was a nice restaurant, but more of a tourist trap. For the price, I did not feel the food was anything too special. I got a local catch. It was nicely prepared but didn’t outshine food I’ve had for 1/3 the price. The dark, grotto feel was fun. If you have the extra money, It’s a fine choice, but I prefer the more local restaurants like Beach House that give you more bank for your buck and a gorgeous ambience.

Maybe a little above average for a seafood restaurant with a view. The seafood was very fresh, but the preparations were pretty typical of a tourist oriented seafood restaurant on a wharf. Mostly a variety of fresh fish and shellfish, fried or grilled with vegetables and some kind of starch. There was nothing really special or very interesting. Service was great, portions were ample, and prices were reasonable. They seemed to be really trying to please. A free appetizer platter and 25% off on all of their bottles of wine. Probably better than the competition.
