Captiva House Ratings and Reviews
Tween Waters and Captiva House were beautifully decorated for Christmas. We ate outside on a perfect Florida evening. The cauliflower and Yingling soup was extraordinary. I had the tuna role from the Sushi menu, which was wonderful. Our experience really could not have been better.
Love Captiva House. Eat there whenever we stay at Tween-Waters Hotel where it is located. Great food and if you are in the small room it is cozy and romantic. If you are seated in main dining room it is huge and empty this time of year. But still love it. Food and service were excellent.
This review is unfair and not representative. We went to The Old Captiva House to celebrate my wife’s birthday, which happened to be on the day after Thanksgiving. We were looking for a romantic, quiet elegant restaurant. Because of the Christmas lights lighting and a fireworks display at Tween Waters, there were thousands of people about, and the restaurant was very crowded, which affected the service. We will go back, just not on a holiday or special event day.
Day after Thanksgiving event at Tween Waters. Wow what a show. Make a reservation at Captive house and you get parking. Very nice setting. Filet was very nice. Scallops a little too spicy. Crab bisque slightly over salted. (Seems to be a FL. thing) BBQ gulf shrimp tastey as well as the key lime pie. Very good Pinot noir. Would recommend
over-priced for a Thanksgiving buffet that that was not particularly interesting (but then it's Thanksgiving!) did not include coffee, but did include gratuity though very little was required of the servers (I'm happy to pay the servers, it was the coffee as extra that I resented);
wine by the glass options were very limited.
I liked almost everything about the place but the restaurant is very brightly lit. Much too bright. Dinner is much more relaxed and enjoyable in a cozy atmosphere. Also, they have no music playing. Just restaurant noise. Obviously, nobody is paying attention to the atmosphere. The parking lot is not paved. When your wife puts on her nice shoes, it's good when they aren't covered in dust when she walks into the restaurant.
This was the first time that we had been to this restaurant. It is considered one of the higher end eating places on Sanibel/Captiva. The menu was quite interesting and offered a number of choices in all areas. One feature that I particularly liked was that there was an entire small plate section of selections which could also be ordered in larger portions. For me, it was perfect because most regular size portions are much too big. We ordered a Caesar salad, that we split. It was very fresh romaine leaves with a delicious dressing and anchovies on the side. I ate those for both of us. Then we split a scallop appetizer, which was two huge scallops. For my entree, I ordered the sea bass, which came in a light cream sauce with wonderfully done carrots, and two kinds of squash that were crunchy and a nice contrast to the fish. Overall, it was a really excellent meal.
Captiva House is a gem. It is not their job to turn tables, but rather welcome you to an evening of great food and service. From the appetizers to the entrees to the desserts, the food was always delicious. The Pumpkin Spice martini was dessert in a martini glass, smooth and scrumptious. We ordered the blue crab bisque and Eric, our excellent waiter, delivered a bowl with an artful display of crab and some sauce at the bottom of the bowl. We thought, ok, maybe this is some french version of a bisque. We must have had puzzled looks on our faces, but then, a few awkward moments later, he poured a familiar looking soup into the bowl creating our delicious bisque. We later asked if he always paused during the delivery of the bisque, and it seems he does from time to time. He enjoys the different reactions. Eric is a pro and knows when to add humor to the meal. We enjoyed his service very much. This was not our first meal at Captiva House and it will not be our last.
Excellent food! New chef Greg has created his own specials adding to the already fine staple of entrees. Local fish.
Ambiance in the Captiva House with its linen table cloths and old Florida charm rounds out a great experience.
No need to go off property for dining.
We were very disappointed with overall experience. The food was acceptable but not outstanding. Our table candle was not lit as on other tables. The filet mignon was rare and not medium as we ordered. The desserts were very good and the best part of the food service. The server was unfriendly and not available when needed. Our reservations were made 2 weeks before the date. No mention or recognition was made we were celebrating our 56th anniversary.
We were staying in Captiva and did a search of top restaurants. Captiva House was ranked as #2 and it did not disappoint. Very beautiful decor reminiscent of SW Florida. For an appetizer I tried the Oysters Alexander and Blue Crab Bisque. Delicious! YOu must try the bisque! I ordered a Wedge Salad and the special of the evening and it was outstanding. My daughter-in-law tried the Lobster Spaghetti, my wife ordered the Filet Mignon, and my son had the Citrus Seafood Risotto. Everyone was happy! We were too stuffed to try dessert and headed back to our apartment at the South Seas Resort . Staff was very professional and we truly enjoyed the evening. We'll be back
Wonderful and captivating. We watched the sunset over the gulf and enjoyed sushi, duck, lobster, and the fillet. It was superb. We usually treat the veggies like garnish and push them to the side, but even the veggies were gorgeous and tasty. We had creme brulee and chocolate cheesecake for desert and they were flawless. Thank you to the Captiva House for making our 20th anniversary so memorable.
Charming waterfront dining, we enjoyed a perfect sunset. Service was impeccable, the food was creative and delicious, we loved the fact that the menu was current and hip definitely not the dated cliche type menus that we have run across in the area. My blackened grouper with pumpkin mash was amazing. We definitely will return to try more dishes.
The Chilean Sea Bass was great and I was able to substitute mashed potatoes for the starch on the menu. Good service and good martini and house cabernet! We had 6:30 reservations and were seated immediately. Around 7:30 the restaurant starts filling up wirh larger groups which means more noise so we planned well!
