Delicious food, reasonable prices. Amazing flavors using fresh and local ingredients. I had the tasting menu and every dish was fantastic. The desserts were also amazing. Heck, even the bread and butter was awesome!
The tasting menu was superb and the amount of food filled us up, which can always be a bit of a worry. All the dishes were nicely presented and the taste stood out for each one. One note of improvement would be for the waiters/waitresses to enunciate the dishes some more since it was difficult to understand/hear them at times. I couldn’t recommend this place enough, the food and atmosphere were fantastic and it’s one of the best meals I’ve had in San Francisco.
Another nice experience. We were a party of 4 and ordered the chefs tasting menu. It was excellent in taste and in the choices served. Our waiter, Joshua, provided excellent service and knowledgeable about the food being served.
One word: phenomenal. Every dish we ordered was off the chart. Their dry aged prime rib was ‘broke da mouth’. We will be returning soon.
Lovely atmosphere . Great semolina dumplings. Excellent bread!
octavia is forever love!
I have been to Octavia a few times in the last couple of years. Each visit I have noticed that the appetizers and desserts are outstanding but the entrees are average. I just have to remember now for next time to order a few appetizers and avoid ordering any entrees.
Excellent cuisine. Thoughtful, fresh preparation and kind and attentive service. Exactly the kind of place we love --- we will be back for sure. Beautiful kitchen as well.
We tried the tasting menu with 5 paired wine. The food was so delicious, wine was great, good service, reasonable price... we had a wonderful time dining there for our anniversary!
We really enjoyed our meal, the service and the extremely efficient kitchen. The duck entreeI ordered was extremely difficukt to cut for some reason, but our delightful waiter immediately offered to replace it with the same petit filet that my wife was enjoying and that was inddded excellent.nnTheir home made rye bread is “to die for”, They even helped me get down their small porch step and get our car. What an excellent restaurant!
Everything was excellent
Visited in the evening of Wednesday.
It seems it’s common to wait 10 - 15 min in this restaurant even you arrive on time beside the table. This is uncomfortable for both.
The dishes are great, duck was very good.
The home made breads are so great, I strongly recommend.
Anyway always busy, many of the guests were couples.
Heavenly all around. We had the tasting menu and loved it all.
Terrific neighborhood jewel box. We live 3 blocks from this restaurant and have dined there through it's various permutations (Meetinghouse, Quince etc.). Octavia is, by far, the best restaurant to occupy this venerable space. Inviting décor, wonderful wait staff, delightful food and a carefully curated wine list.
Octavia is expensive. However, when you crunch the numbers it's actually a pretty good value. We went there for our son's birthday and, since it was our first visit, decided to try the "tasting menu". 10 courses all thoughtfully prepared...some menu favorites and a sprinkling of surprises...everything first rate. We were thoroughly satisfied with the generous and delicious meal...and at $70 well worth it. The staff was thorough and friendly without being unctuous...I can't imagine a better group.
All in all, you'll enjoy Octavia very much...I highly recommend it!
Everything was delicious, but it was very noisy. I would recommend going later in the evening as it got quieter if you have issues with noise
Octavia is a regular on my schedule because the food, wine selections, food and wine service, and casual ambience are all first class and, while not cheap, reflect favorable value for the overall experience. Along with the sister operation at frances, Octavia represents sf non-formal dining at the best level.
Service was a bit stiff and unfriendly. Our servers never smiled. My favorite restaurant still...
Wonderful meal at Octavia. I have frequented the sister restaurant, Frances, in the past and wanted to give this a try. I was rewarded with an outstanding meal in a very friendly and comfortable restaurant. Excellent service, a great menu, good wine selections, fantastic bread, wonderful deserts.....can't go wrong here! Ingredients are local and fresh. Simply outstanding.
After checking out the local restaurants upon arrival at our San Francisco hotel, we decided Octavia was the place to go, and made our reservation. Friday night was busy, as expected, and we had a good meal. Our waitress, Kim, was a delight....pleasant, attentive, and very much in control. Our Petit Filet was wonderfully cooked and well presented. Crispy New Potatoes were not crispy at all, but served in a very tangy mustard sauce with jalapeno while the Charred Snap Peas, which were not charred, were served in a tasty blend of ricotta, lemon, and avocado. Both sides were quite good. Bread was $2 extra for those wishing to partake; perhaps this is the trend, but we found that disappointing.
We did have one problem. Upon entering the restaurant we noted the one "open" table was in the corner right next to the very busy entrance to the kitchen, which was in constant use by the waitstaff going in and out (and, apparently, by diners heading for the restroom). We knew this would not be a good spot for our dinner and called back the bearded host who was trying to seat us at this table to look for a different seating option. His reaction was curt and one of surprise.....bordering on rudeness. We simply wanted to wait for another table to become available and had no problem doing so...and it took him a good bit of time to understand this simple fact. Later, when things were busy throughout the restaurant, this same person came to our table and delivered our filets and quickly left without asking if there was anything else we might need (which there was). This one individual seemed completely devoid of empathy for a customer's needs and of simple pleasantry and politeness that are essential to the service industry. It did leave a bit of a black cloud over our head for a good part of the evening, and made what would have been a great evening simply good.
What a gem. Hitting on all cylinders. Great food, wonderful wines and attentive service. Casual dining, but a bright space with large windows. Tasting menu offered a wide range of items from the menu at good value. Wine selection not broad, but good quality and great taste with the food
Food is wonderful. Loved the tasting menu and the wine pairing.
We ordered 6 dishes and everything was amazing. The "deviled" egg was divine. The squid ink pasta & fettucini were divine, as was the duck sausage and steak. Best part was the great wine and exceptional service! Cannot wait to go back!
Was in The City for work. My colleagues made me the “dinner committee of one”. Think I scored on this one!
Delicious. Serene. Appropriate. The tasting menu was a great experience and the service was world-class.
I took my adult daughters to Octavia to celebrate the younger's belated 31st birthday. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire event. It's simply but tastefully decorated with seating for about 45 people and an open kitchen in the rear of the restaurant. The chef's menu for $70 is a darn good value. There was plenty eclectic Asian California food which was elegantly and creatively presented as well as tasting very good. Be careful not to eat too much of the delicious bread!
Service was friendly, attentive, but not overbearing. Corkage is $25/btl and their wine list offers some reasonably priced and tasty 'value' wines as well as some pretty pricey ones as well. The purchased 2016 Champalou Vouvray was perfect with all of the early courses and the 2006 Leclerc Gevrey Champaux I brought worked with the main courses.
The only complaint for me, not necessarily shared by my kids, was the ambient noise was a bit high. Is this simply a generational issue? In any case, I would happily return to Octavia.
Finally, knowing we were celebrating a birthday, there was a tasteful card and a cute 'special' dessert for my daughter.
Go and enjoy!
Octavia is our go to special event location. The chefs tasting menu never fails to impress, and the value is incredible. I can't wait to go back.
Beautiful on all levels!
Very good food but quite substantially overpriced.
Great space! Wonderful food!
Excellent dining experience
Octavia is a lovely neighborhood gem and offers one of San Francisco's best dining experiences. Our group of five had the tasting menu and thoroughly enjoyed/learned from every course. Outstanding service, too.
Once again Octavia proved that they absolutely deserve their Michelin rating. The food is innovative with just the right number of surprise ingredients, flavors and consistencies. Our table of 4 each had different dishes and every one was fantastic. Given the quality of food and service, we feel that it is reasonably priced. Octavia also has a comprehensive wine list with offerings ranging from moderate to expensive, but with enough great selections to meet anyone's needs and expectations. We can't wait to go back again.
Service was attentive; the waiter had a wealth of knowledge about the menu. Food was superb. We had green garlic soup, salads, steak, salmon and dessert. One disappointment: the tables are very close together.
As two people whom combined have over 35 years of restaurant experience I FOH and my fiancé a chef this was an amazing dining experience! Loved everything about it!
Amazing restaurant, tasting menu is definitely the way to go.
Waiting with no where to sit down and no bar is never fun. It wasn’t terrible but once we did get seated the service was patchy and some of the food mediocre so I wouldn’t rush back. Overall disappointing and not half as good as Frances.
The experience was good, I just did not enjoy my meal.
Great ambiance, creative food, and amazing service are all here at Octavia. Try the tasting menu, it might get you out of your comfort zone but you might find some new delicious foods you might not have tried otherwise.
In SF for a long weekend and read about Octavia online as a hot restaurant. Decent crowd in the compact, well-appointed dining room. Service was solid and the food was delicious and inventive. Definitely go if you can!
