Octagon Ratings and Reviews
Booked for Valentines Day but was not told by Open Table there was a special menu and a fixed price. Probably would not have gone if we knew we could not order off the menu. That being said the food was very good (except the cucumber soup) as was the service. The place has a strange feel, like you’re in the middle of the hotel lobby. I’ll go back because the food was good but I’d probably just sit st the bar.
We've been to the restaurant many times. Does not disappoint.
Usually we're staying in the Marriott Mystic Spa hotel and either do room service or dine at the restaurant. There are several dietary concerns among the family members and it's never an issue.
The service is exceptional...Caitlin is especially to be recognized...the food options plentiful, the wait staff attentive yet in the background. Michael too is to be thanked for working around our food specifics for room service.
We have been to local eateries while in the area and have not had the level or enjoyment of dining in the same way as we've enjoyed at Octagon. Even the accompanying bistro/bar for lunch has been terrific. Staff is great, selections too.
Makes our stay in the area worth it since we travel there for business and pleasure every few months.
Very limited menu, but what they do serve is ok. Not many allergy friendly options. The waitress we had was AMAZING! She was very pregnant, but she was extremely happy and high energied, even joked around with the teens at the table. The wait staff is good, kind of slow though, even at the bar. Not cheap at all. The inside has very outdated decor, creepy painting, as my daughter called them.
The night before New Year's Eve. We were staying at the Hotel for the weekend. The dining room, the staff. All excellent. The food not as much. Ordered the surf & turf chowder, I wouldn't do that again. Order 4 oysters, very small. My wife ordered the 8oz. filet mignon and I ordered 18oz. rib-eye steak. It was good at the moment but ended up being very salty as an after-taste. The flavor that remained with me was just salt. That hasn't been my experience at steak-houses like Peter Luger. Also, the women at the table near us actually sent back her order of Atlantic swordfish as she told us, she felt it had been mis-represented as a grill dish when it was more soup like. Having said that, it was extremely cold outside after a full day it was decided that the ease of staying in the hotel after a massage outweighed trudging through snow. I wanted to like Octagon and actually had the breakfast buffet complimentary due to the concierge lounge being closed on the weekend. We did that both days of our stay. Again I wanted to like Octagon I just wish the food was a bit better.
We had a very nice choice of starters, entrees, and desserts for our Christmas Day dinner. We were treated to a lovely amuse bouche and aperitif. Very easy to make the reservation. The meal was amazing, the service was personable and very professional. Our server was lovely. The manager stopped by to make sure we were enjoying our meal. All around wonderful experience.
The Octagon is a very good all-purpose hotel restaurant. We had a very well-prepared dinner on a n ight we were staying at this hotel. We both had steak which was of high quality, well prepared to our specifications with appropriate, individually cooked sides. Our server was efficient and helpful. While we ate early, the cocktail lounge that was attached to the restaurant was doing a lively business that translated into a number of diners in the main restaurant.
The next morning we enjoyed the breakfast buffet that was served in the restaurant. There were a reasonable amount of options available on the buffet table. There was also a menu that had a number of choices for anyone who didn't want to try the buffet.
The service was uninspired and slow. The food was not acceptable. My girlfriend's steak was not cooked they way she had requested and it was more than 50% fat. My steak was cooked the way I ordered it but again had more fat than expected. They did comp 1 meal & 2 desserts. I had told them that this was an anniversary but nobody even mentioned it to us. We were very disappointed.
We went here last month for the first time and had the perfect evening. Food, service, ambiance. We decided to go again for date night. We shared scallops for our appetizer again and as usual they would to die for. My husband had the Filet Mignon and I had the ribeye. He had the Filet the last time and it was cooked a perfect medium rare. This time however his was rare in the middle. My thick ribeye was charred but it was charred entirely and yet the center was also a warm rare. They put it back on the grill fortunately but ended up making his dry and mine even more burnt on the outside and nearly inedible. We will still go back most likely but it was such a disappointment from out first experience.
Stopped here overnight on a vacation trip. Had nade reservations which we didn't need, place was empty at 6:30 PM. No bread or salad, meal was " different and not in a good way " I had fish with noodles and it was more like fish soup. OK portions but Costly not worth the meal. Hotel is for business seminars and I don't believe local visits for a meal. NO AMBIANCE AT ALL. No view over a lake in fact no view. Would not recommend.
Consistently good food and service. Eat here approx 10x annually and always preferred. Food creative and good variety of meat, fish and poultry. Salads great, soups too. Last pasta dish was a bit overdone but not enough to send back; more aldente would be only suggestion to chef.
Disappointing. I ordered a Cesar salad light dressing. I had no dressing. It was served w croutons. Parmesan crisp. Both pre packaged. I could have made this home for .50 cents.
My friend asked for steak fries instead of mashed potatoes. Literally only 5 steak fries. Place was empty. When making reservations I noticed any time was good I should have known. No one goes here.
Poor experience. Have been before and have enjoyed the steaks, especially with the roasted garlic that comes with them. Menu however changed. Only 3 steak options. Quality of steak quite poor ( I am generally not picky ), especially for the price. I had the rib eye and it was very chewy/tough. Salad was the best thing about the dinner. Service good. Will not be going back.
Well, we are locals. Octagon is one of our favorite restaurants. We have breakfast & dinner at this place. Waitresses & waiters are very nice and respectful, they do make you feel at “home”. The food is delicious...this restaurant has a smooth ambience and you’ll feel you are at a 5 star restaurant. LOVE this place.
We both thought it was excellent! We enjoyed great service, great food and atmosphere. It was a quiet evening out for us so I can't review the drinks or if they had an outdoor area but if they did that would have just been a bonus. Definitely go there again!
Restaurant is located adjacent to Mystic Marriott so for ease while staying there last year we dined at Octagon. What a find! It was so much better than expected and we are used to NY/NJ great restaurants. The food is excellent, good selection for family who are fish only eaters, gluten free eaters, picky eaters. We have since dined at Octagon about 8 times and have always enjoyed our meals and selections. It's great when travelling not to have to find a liquor store and their selection of spirits is good. My son finds tons of gluten free options and particularly loves their GF bread - thank you chef. The fish is always fresh and tasty. We invited a local resident friend to join us last week who lives in the area but had never dined there. She too had a positive experience. We will be back!
My wife and I went for our anniversary .
We had been before and had a wonderful experience, so when we were looking for a great steakhouse this was it. To our surprise the menu had completely changed! The menu on Open Table didn't match the one in the restaurant. Not even close! It had changed from a steakhouse to a family restaurant. The manager and staff were very accommodating and made it a great night for us anyway.
Open Table should make sure their listings are up to date.
Lorraine was an excellent server and cannot recommend her enough. The Wedge Salad had some of the best blue cheese I've tasted in some time. Also well balanced amounts of cheese / bacon / dressing / salad. Often the bacon can overwhelm, but not here.
The French Onion Soup was solid. My wife commented bouillon-ish, but I thought beef based. Very cheesy and not a drop left.
My son's salmon was simply seared and excellent temperature and taste wise.
My wife's tuna was perfectly lightly seared.
Last, but really first - nice G&T to start with.
Overall, for a last minute dinner choice, we all left feeling the food was great and so was the service.
Service as always was flawless. Our wine selection was available and the choice of entrees were varied. I even noticed them accommodate a gluten free person with their menu selection at another table. For us, we visit more than just occasionally, and we were not disappointed this time. The short rib continues to be a stand-out.
