Oceano Bistro - Clayton Ratings and Reviews
Took my fiance' to Oceano for Valentine's Day. It was both of our first times there, it was a great find for us. I'm glad I found it on OpenTable. The food was very good. We shared crab cakes for an appetizer, she got the Sea Bass, I got the Shellfish Soffrito for entrees. Then we split the Red Velvet cake with Rumchata Icing. The cake was a bit dry, but I didn't go there for cake, so no biggie. Both of us left happy with our meals and will be back again!
Our 1st time here was for Valentine's Day and as you know some places on V Day can be over crowded with extra table thrown in for more people. It wasn't like that here & we loved it. The 2 of had a great dinner, he had the prawns for app and sea bass. He didn't even want to share the bass. Haha the sauce with the prawns was FANTASTIC. I had oysters and the salmon. Food would have been a 5 but the 1st potatoe cake with salmon was cold, but they rushed and got me a hot one & it was DELISH. One thing I want to point out is the owner was at the kitchen seeing things as they went out and the manager was walking around and doing things to help out his crew in a professional way. A team player, coming to every table to say hello and check on you. You don't see that often anymore. Even spook with the manager as were were leaving & told him the same. Dedinatly will be going back. Great Great sea food, date or even quaint girls dinner.
We dined recently at Oceano Bistro and had, quite simply, the best meal we've ever had in St Louis. The staff was amazingly accommodating. I called and asked to move up our 7:15 reservation and was pleased they could arrange an earlier arrival, and when we got there even earlier that that, we were whisked to our seats right away. That's not to say the restaurant wasn't busy, just very accommodating. Unfortunately, upon seating, we were bombarded by loud unpleasant conversation (including a loud F-bomb heard throughout the establishment) from the bar. We discussed it with our server and the maitre d' and the offending group was discretely asked to wrap up their party and the remainder of the evening was fabulous. The food was excellent. The bread and oil combination was terrific, our soups and salads were spot on (the special soup of the day was particularly good), and our entrees were outstanding. All five in our party commented on how well they enjoyed their entrees, and these included the shellfish soffrito, sea bass, salmon, special filet mignon, and the beef tenderloin. Nice wine list. Dessert was a special treat for our table, as the management offered two desserts on the house to accommodate our earlier displeasure from the bar. These included chocolate chip cookies and a chocolate and peanut butter souffle (with candle for our birthday girl). Mmmm. Our server, Kristin, was also fabulous. Her personality and professionalism were way above average, and she helped turn a potentially uncomfortable evening into one we will remember for awhile. We will not hesitate to return!
By far the biggest disappointment of Clayton restaurant week because I love seafood. The “lump” crab cakes were anything but lump, and the sea bass, though cooked well, along with the risotto had absolutely no taste, whatsoever. Good service, good bread...though they kept running out of it, and didn’t get any until halfway through our salads...terrible, tasteless food! So disappointing. The drinks were good though...the ambiance was good as well...may consider going back for happy hour drinks only!
As a favorite, they missed the mark this time. Absolutely disappointing. I rave about the top notch everything and during restaurant week I brought family to experience and they didn’t deliver. Reservation time was not honored, handled as if we were a walk-in and sat at closer to 8:45p. The food experience and service showed as if they were overwhelmed and the overall experience was missed.
They won’t lose us but a sour impression was left with our guest. Will never visit again during restaurant week.
Came here with some work friends on our annual night out.
Pros: EXCELLENT food, attentive and friendly service, fair prices, not too loud-we could converse with each other without having to feel like we were shouting
Cons: parking in Clayton is hit or miss (but do not let this stop you from going; they do have Valet)
While I really enjoyed my meal there, I wasn't expecting the food prices to be quite so high ($32 for sea bass). The portions were good sized though. And the wine list had a nice range of less expensive and expensive wines. We had a fabulous French white bugundy for $35.
My husband, myself and our adult sons went during Restaurant Week since we had never been there before and we'd heard about the place. We had the $35 tasting menu and I will say we were all a bit disappointed. My husband ordered the trout with green beans and the beans were raw. They tasted as though they had been run through hot water to make them warm but they were RAW! Not even al dente. He asked for another helping that was cooked and when they came out they weren't much better. One of our sons ordered the sea bass which he loves but here again the accompaniments were not very good. Our other son ordered the shrimp scampi linguini and rated it only "okay". I had the salmon which had a very good taste but was not cooked all the way through. The vegetables that came with it though were good. For dessert 3 of us had the bread pudding. Here again we all love bread pudding. We found it a bit dry even though ice cream came with it. When I think of all the restaurants in and around St. Louis to try I doubt we will go back to Oceano. We've lived in the area for 5 years and have tried some great places. I can't say this has been one of them.
Oceano Bistro has a homely yet exquisite surrounding. The food & drinks were prepared with care and attention; plentiful portions. Everyone enjoyed and napped afterwards. If you are looking for a home cooked meal yet prepared elegantly, stop by. The staff is very attentive and friendly.
