Oceanique is our special place in Evanston. It is amazing for all the right reasons. Food, service and ambiance are the tops. We also had a great bottle of wine.
An amazing experience from start to finish. Menu stays fresh. Food is prepared and presented in a way that uses the quality of the ingredients and not cover that up. Service is attentive but not hovering. Excellent wine list and be sure to save room for dessert.
I go to Oceanqiue a couple of times a year. It's one of my favorite restaurants to go to when I visit family. I even had my 18th birthday there and they made me a huge Napolean cake (I literally get gift cards to Oceanique for Christmas because my family knows how much I love it). I will always love the food there but the service last time was a little bit lacking... I am 20 but look on the younger side and brought my friend with me that is the same age. Now, I have gone multiple times with other people my age or younger and have always received amazing service but the waiter I had this time did not really give us the time of day. He barely spoke to us while he was cracking jokes and actually talking to the table next to us. He also forgot the drinks we ordered but everything else was correct. Maybe it was because I look younger than 20? I don't know. It was really disappointing because I am always used to being recognized when I walk into the restaurant either by the really nice man that fills the waters or the chef. The food was amazing as always and I never thought I would feel like that at my favorite place to eat but maybe it was a fluke. It really is the best food to get in the Chicago area, though.
First time at Oceanique for my husband and me. Although—surprisingly—we had to wait 15 minutes for our server to take our order, every other aspect of our 37th wedding anniversary dinner there was outstanding.
Lovely restaurant. Food was delicious and presentation was beautifully done. Everything we ate tasted fresh. We will definitely be coming back!
Oceanique was a intimate place for my husband and I to celebrate our Anniversary. The staff were very nice and friendly and the food was absolutely delicious!!!!
Best seafood, best service-such an inventive menu. You will never be disappointed.
Fresh ingredients, excellent, well prepared dinner. I highly recommend, Oceanique, will return in the future.
This restaurant is my go to for special occasions. But sometimes just for a smaller meal, a glass of great wine, because even the small plates are divine. This is food impeccably and imaginatively prepared. The sauces have mystery, so delicious.
The staff and owners polished but witty and very nice. Beautiful rooms, simply but very tastefully done. Highly rated for many years now. Crazy sophisticated wine list!
All around great
The chef was great and nice.
The food and service were excellent. The wine list is very extensive and very expensive. Nice option for a special occasion.
This is a wonderful setting for a special occasion for foodies.
Outstanding tasting menu-
Wonderful service and terrific ambience -
Great food and very attentive staff
Great food, I will definitely recommended this restaurant for mine friends.
as always, outstanding food. very good service. only improvement could be turning up the music just a bit.
Consistently excellent food and service. My trout was done to perfection. I've never had fish that was as perfect as that, ever. I highly recommend Oceanique and i look forward to going there again.
The food was outstanding. The service was excellent. The drinks were very over priced. $28 glass of Riesling, $20 for glass of unexceptional Pinot Noir, $14 for blended Spanish wine and $15 for a manhattan made with the well whiskey.
The plain under stated ambience did not match the elegance of the meal.
This is only the second time in twenty-five years that I walked out of a restaurant without having a meal. I had made a reservation at Oceanique to celebrate my husband's birthday. When my husband and I arrived at Oceanique, we were seated at the worst table in the restaurant, even though we had made the reservation several weeks ago and had told the restaurant that we were celebrating a birthday. Our table was next to the kitchen door. It was so close to the kitchen door, you could hear the staff inside the kitchen talking, and dishes clattering, and you could feel the breeze from the kitchen door opening and closing. We asked the server to seat us at a different table. There were other tables at the restaurant that were not occupied. The server said he couldn't move us to a different table. The server was a college-aged kid who could not possibly give us advice on wine selection or food, and seemed like he was new to working at a restaurant. We also spoke to the hostess, and asked for a different table, but she said the table by the kitchen was the only table available. The hostess looked like she was still in high school. This is the first time in my life where I have ever complained about the table where I was seated and not received a different table. It was deeply offensive that at a restaurant at this price, the only point of contact available was a teenager. No manager spoke to us before we left. I have received better service at a Starbucks. When you are going to pay more than $300 for dinner for two, you expect to have decent service, and a decent atmosphere. Oceanique is a ripoff. Terrible service. Terrible atmosphere. The entire restaurant is dated and tired and overpriced.
We recently celebrated our Anniversary at Oceanique and had an outstanding time. With each course, we tasted my husband said, "this guy can really cook!". Chef Mark Grosz formerly from the renown Le Francias really can cook. The food was tremendous and we plan on going back soon.
One year anniversary
Food and service were both very excellent. Went on a Thursday night, quiet in the restaurant. Chef came out and said hello, which was a nice touch.
The food was incredible but the ambiance wasn’t good.
Lovely place for a special occasion. The food was definitely outstanding. The menu is not large with just a very small selecion of fish for a fish restaurant. But, what we ate was absolutely delicious. Wonderful, frienly service. Really a special place.
We purchased a Group On for a 5 course meal for 2. They actually gave us 8 courses instead. Not sure why as the adjacent table had the same offer and they only received the 5 courses. Each course was very good, well presented, tasty and interesting. The lobster salad was probably the best of the courses. The main course of halibut was very good, but we have had an equally good entree of this fish at several other establishments. The service was excellent and attentive. At no time during the meal did we feel rushed. This is a restaurant for special occassions as the regular menu is quite pricey. The wine was excellent, but could have been serviced a little cooler. The only surprise other than the extra courses was when the bill came. We were charged tax on the full price of the dinner and not on the discounted Group On Certificate. I do not think that is correct. They also put the tip directly on the bill again on the full price of the option.
The food & service is outstanding. We celebrated an early Father's Day and feel we had a great time.
Come here when attending Music Theatre Works in Evanston! The food is delicious and service excellent!
The server Sarah started us a little sour note, too bad for an otherwise good restaurant.
I saw on the door that happy hour was about to end [did not know they had a happy hour!]
When asked, the hostess said Happy Hour was only for bar seating.
We ordered drinks and asked Sarah our server if Happy Hour applied to seated diners, and she answered somewhat abruptly that HH was over. I looked at my phone and saw it was not, and told her so. She did not apologize, just said she had thought it was over, then took our order.
As we placed our food order, realized she had not registered my food allergies posted on OpenTable. I expect a higher level of service when paying $150+ per person.
10 mins later she quoted the "specials" to the couple next table over, whom she greeted as regulars.
I called her over and asked why she had not offered us a choice from the evenings specials, and she just got flustered and asked if we wanted to change the order. No apologies, just excuses and an offer to put the a 1"x1" piece of the special on the amuse. Too bad, as the food was a treat!
The food was excellent, the service was superb the wine list was outstanding. If you have not been to this great restaurant in Evanston, you are missing a great dining experience!
great food- taste. eclectic & creative entrees, broad selection of wines. Quaint setting & the atmosphere perfect for a quiet dinner for two. Very personal service from everyone - wine sommelier, wait staff, etc. Chef Mark also came and thanked us personally at end of meal. A gem of a restaurant.
We've been Oceanique guests on special occasions for many years. It never disappoints. Not only are Mark Grosz's dishes delicious, but it's the only place where we can relax in a calm and quiet setting and actually enjoy conversation with our meal. The staff were very accommodating to our requests, including guidance with the wine list. Indeed, the recommended pairings added an extra measure of enjoyment to a special evening. If you consider value, rather than absolute price, Oceanique is a bargain. We just returned from Montreal, where friends to us to Poissonerie, a highly rated and high-priced seafood restaurant. It doesn't hold a candle to Oceanique! (And it was impersonal and noisy too.)
Outstanding food and service! This was my third dining experience and all have been exceptional. Seafood is taken to the next level: super fresh and imaginatively prepared with vegetables, spices, herbs and sauces that pair perfectly. Desserts are a treat for the eye, not to mention the tummy, if one has room. The wine list is extensive, with food pairings available. Needless to say, I’m eagerly awaiting my next visit. Very eagerly!
I have been there several times and the food and service is consistently very good. Chef Mark does French type Cuisine with touches of Asian and his desserts are amazing. I especially love his Matcha Ice Cream and fruit and tarts all made in his kitchen. Go for a special occasion or go anytime.
Fun date night spot
Outstanding food and service. You can tell the chef pays attention to every little detail.
Love their food. The tasting menu has great choice. The scallops n halibut were amazingly fresh n cooked to perfection. Chef has a way of blending ingredients so taste is so good. It is my most favorite place for dining in Evanston
Oceanique has been one of my favorite restaurants but this time I was very disappointed. The quality and quantity was lacking. I probably will not rush back which saddens me as it was my favorite restaurant for seafood.
just delicious..creative ..perfect presentation..best butternut ravioli, lobster..love the extras
Pretty flawless, as usual. Mousse, salad, and ocean trout all wonderful.
